AIBU - Painter has painted onto glass of windows?

Sunandsea13 · 11/03/2025 22:19

Hi all, we had the kitchen painted and the painter has painted the wooden windows too. They are 2 windows separated into 4 panes/8 in total. In all of them there is white paint onto the glass, not even straight just sloppy at the sides/uneven. It’s about 1-2 cm. The invoice is £480.

The wallpaper is also not a complete match in places, but I can live with that.

YAIBU - remove yourself with a glass scraper

YANBU - ask the painter to fix himself

Thank you everyone, not sure how to navigate this as have a new baby and don’t want him to come around angry…but does this sound ok? Should I specify how much of a reduction?

Hi [X]

Thank you for your time the last few days.

I’ve had a look at the kitchen since you left and have noticed that there is white paint on the glass of the windows and some of the wallpaper is not matched up and is not fully secured in some places/likely to come off. I have attached a few photos so you can see what I mean.

Would you mind either coming back to re-do some of the wallpaper sections so it matches and removing the paint off the windows? If you’d rather not do that then please may we arrange a reduced invoice for the painting of the kitchen as I’ll need to get it re-done in those sections?

Tell them you were shocked to see the messy paint job and wallpaper and want them to redo it correctly.

Diningtableornot · 11/03/2025 23:52

That’s terrible. Do they claim to be professionals?

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 11/03/2025 23:52

Your second paragraph should be:

Please let me know when you can come and fix it. Thanks.

Rescueremy · 11/03/2025 23:52

Use AI to write an email for you. It will get your point across better. The wallpaper needs redoing! The paint is a easy fix but wouldn't pay a penny for the papering & would expect him to replace the rolls and get an actual professional to do it not him!

Gcsunnyside23 · 11/03/2025 23:58

You're being too nice op. Also if you need more paper deduct it from the invoice

This is far too polite. I'd send this:

Dear X
I have to say I'm very disappointed with the quality of the finish in the kitchen. Please see my photos attached which show that the wallpaper isn't lined up / put up properly and the paint on the windows extends unevenly onto the glass. When will you be able to come back and correct this?

Ummm … while I understand that you don’t want upset, stop apologising to him. It’s not you that wants money for substandard work.
I’d make statements. “ the wall paper is not matched, it is overlapped in places and will not adhere longer term. The window paint has been painted onto the glass sections and will need to be addressed.’ Ask what action he proposes to fix the problem.
As much as I hate this - do you have a male in your life who can speak with him?
And don’t worry about getting a ‘reputation’. I’m sure this guy already has one!

mathanxiety · 12/03/2025 00:08

Tell him to redo the wallpaper and to scrape the paint carefully off the windows.

mathanxiety · 12/03/2025 00:09

That botched wallpaper would drive me to murder.

anothernameanotherplanet · 12/03/2025 00:13

Like others on here…. Get the paper redone. Do the paint yourself.

Why not just stick a Kick Me sign on your butt.

Dear Cowboy,
We're not happy with the quality of the work you recently performed in out home.

There is paint on the kitchen window panes that needs to be scraped off.

There are problems with the wallpaper:
Overlapping.
Misaligned pattern.

These problems need to be rectified at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

Charlotte's message is perfect. OP send that.
They should also replace the wallpaper they ruined. If its over an arch, and is more difficult, then presumably they saw this when they came to quote you and would have taken this into account.

AlexDrake72 · 12/03/2025 00:29

Just shown DH (painter/decorator) and he said it is shocking! Scraping paint off the windows is something he teaches 16 year old apprentices to do and usually decent painters with time don’t even get that much paint on the windows if any.

The wallpaper into the reveal is even worse. So disappointing for you and you are not unreasonable to speak to him about it.

IHateMozzies · 12/03/2025 00:31

That’s really bad!

Completely shoddy workmanship
I wouldn’t accept either if those
The point of employing and paying someone to do a job is that you get someone that has experience and skill.
Both the wallpapering and painting show no skill at all.

Perfect letter (the one by Sunandsea).
I feel for you as the same happened to me. My painter did an appalling job, even worse than yours, including buying the wrong colour paint! I knew that getting him back would be pointless as he was so bad so I only paid him for the paint. I told him to take me to Court for the rest of the payment, but showed him the photos I had taken. He said he wouldn’t come back so he got no more money from me. In the end, my daughter and son-in-law came and re-did it for me. They had always done it before, but I knew how busy they were with work, so didn’t ask them this time. They were pretty cross about that in the light of what happened. I got the ‘professional’ in so they didn’t have to do it.
The ‘painter’ was actually the father of a very good carpenter I had hired. Foolishly, I mentioned needing a decorator and he recommended his dad. It came out afterwards that said dad hadn’t done any decorating except in his own house. His son obviously was trying to get him some money, but I had assumed he was an expert.

Thanks everyone, wanted to check I wasn’t being ridiculous. I have had things painted before and usually do a couple tidy ups after which I don’t mind as I am very neat with painting. But this seems a bit ridiculous? Part of the wallpaper is over the top of the door arch so think it’s a bit trickier for him. The other bits attached were not as bad but still not great.

The painting of the walls is good although a bit slap dash in places.

Just feel awkward complaining and he’s a local painter so don’t want to get a bad rep with other tradespeople? He was meant to do the bathroom too but will cancel that.

Would you expect him to take the paper down and re-do? I don’t think I have enough left :/ He finished today, is there a time limit you think to respond? He’s not sent the final invoice yet.

If these photos show the wallpaper as it's been hung then looks like it's been hung upside down according to the site you link to later.

Cakeandcheeseforever · 12/03/2025 03:59

I wouldn’t want to pay in full but am not sure I’d want him back to finish it. I did a better job on my own wallpapering having never done it before. Painting round windows is easy, he wasn’t even trying there and probably doesn’t have any perfectionism or skill for the job. He could have used masking tape if he doesn’t have a steady hand (which surely a painter should!) How did you find him? Leave a bad review.

Really? This is a fuller picture. It looks the right way to me? If not, let me know how you see it.

I’m tempted to scrape the windows myself and get someone else to fix the paper, but then don’t want to be paying out twice :/

I'll pay when he comes back to fix it, or get a quote for someone else fixing it and take it off what is owed to him.
