WIBU to split cost of holiday four ways?

Eldermilleniallyogii · 09/03/2025 20:59

3 adults and 1 child (age 3) going on holiday. Holiday package will not give clear split of cost. Mother and daughter will share one room. Younger daughter will share with her DC3. Would you just split the cost of the holiday four ways? They have a room each so makes sense to split the accommodation costs equally and the child will also need a seat on the plane but we had thought the child place might have been cheaper than an adult space.

Splitting four ways seems fair however will mean in practice A and B will each pay a quarter of the cost while C will pay half as she is paying for C and D but it is her child.

How would you split the cost?

Is there a better way to do this?

To be clear the holiday site does not give a breakdown otherwise we would just do that. Previously we planned a family holiday through British airways and it clearly stated the cost for each person. We booked accommodation separately.

I would say the person with the child should pay a bit more but not double as the flight will have cost less as kids don't pay tax. Is it all inclusive, self catering? If it's all inclusive then the child will also cost less. And are you sure there definitely isn't a free child place? I think meeting in the middle would be reasonable.

TwentyTwentyFive · 09/03/2025 21:03

You can't split a holiday 4 ways when one of those attending is a 3 year old. 😯

Split it 3 ways between the adults.

Eldermilleniallyogii · 09/03/2025 21:04

It doesn't appear to be a free child place and it would be self catering.

Mother and daughter will share one room. Younger daughter will share with her DC3.
Mother and daughter both adults?
Adult and a 3 year old?
The other room single adult?
So 2 adults having to share a room paying the same as an adult having room to self and a mum sharing room with tiddler?! Not at all fair!!

strawlight · 09/03/2025 21:05

I’d say split 3 ways between adults. What do A, B & C all think?

I don't think you can expect 2 other adults to pay a third of your child's holiday. It would be nice to offer if they can afford it but rude to expect that.

mrsm43s · 09/03/2025 21:07

I'd split 3 ways between the adults in this situation.

Dresdemer · 09/03/2025 21:07

I would price it up for if there were 3 adults going, and charge the mum of the 3 year old the difference between that and the total cost.

Kids are usually cheaper because they eat less etc but also because things quickly get unaffordable for many families otherwise.

Or, granny and aunty can very kindly agree to split 3 ways. I think that would be pretty normal when DC are so small. We have certainly had friends' kids along on that basis while still so little.

SeaDragon17 · 09/03/2025 21:07

Split it 7 ways.

Mum & older daughter pay 2 shares each.

Younger daughter pays 3 shares.

Eldermilleniallyogii · 09/03/2025 21:08

Yes ABC and are adults 40+ and there is a three year old.

So as not to drip feed too much I am C and it is my DC who is three. I'm booking the holiday so not sure what to propose for the costing. It does seem off for the 3yo to cost the same but we will have a room to share and I don't know how easyJet prices child places on flights.

I think really it should be split by four/by rooms, so you pay for the room you are in, if there are two adults they split it, which inevitably means the mum pays in full for her room for her and her child. However, if it is causing so much strife and you don't want to fall out maybe split by 3.5 so all the adults pay a little more to offset the fourth party being a child.

Overthemoun · 09/03/2025 21:10

Run it through easyJet as a 2 person holiday to compare?

CaptainFuture · 09/03/2025 21:10

Ah my understanding a bit skewiff! But no I don't think you can charge adults the same to share a room as a parent and her toddler!

Octavia64 · 09/03/2025 21:11

Child pricing is to encourage bookings and get families in.

If the child is taking up an adult bed in a twin room and has a seat on the aeroplane they cost as much as an adult.

There isn't a correct answer to this one however if the package doesn't have a child price then children are charged as adults.

fruitbrewhaha · 09/03/2025 21:11

EasyJet price kids flight at slightly less than adults. It would be on your booking email.

Who is on the holiday? Is this you and your sister plus your mother, plus your daughter? Also depends a bit on how flush you all are.

Redfred00 · 09/03/2025 21:11

I think the child should pay 1/2 of an adult share.
So if the bill is £100 I'd divide it by 4
Each adult would pay 25
The child would pay 12.50
Then the other 12.50 is split between the 3 adults so 4.17 each.

TickingAlongNicely · 09/03/2025 21:12

Is it an apartment or two hotel rooms?

2 Hotel rooms... you pay per room.

Apartment.... split between adults.
Flights... everyone pay their own (you can look up flights costs)

Presumably you can look up some similar holidays and flights though.

Or I quite like @SeaDragon17 's idea.

I would try to get your mum and sister to suggest a split as a starting point! Or are they saying split 4 ways?

FlippityFlippityFlop · 09/03/2025 21:12

If you were booking it separately how much would you have to pay. It would be the equivalent of 50% as you and your child will have your own room (1 adult and 1 child is almost always the same as 2 adults)

Eldermilleniallyogii · 09/03/2025 21:13

Yes me, my sister, our mother and my youngest DC

Run it through easyJet as a 2 person holiday to compare?

a good idea @Overthemoun

A child's flight is the same cost as an adult.

The holiday should be split 4 ways.

Em94 · 09/03/2025 21:14

I’ve just booked onto a holiday of my mums with my twin 2 year olds, I’ve paid the exact price each for all 3 of us.
I don’t think adult and childrens holiday prices are different anymore so I’d say it would be split 4 ways x

FairFuming · 09/03/2025 21:14

Id say the mother and toddler should be 40% and the other 2 adults pay 30% each as the child's place will likely have been less. Does this include facilities at the hotel? Hopefully this is all being discussed before booking
