Supermarket staff wearing a keffiyeh

Alpaccas · 07/03/2025 22:35

I saw a member of staff wearing a keffiyeh today in Sainsbury’s. Do you think it’s a bit too political for a member of staff to be wearing, whilst wearing their work uniform?

I’d assume it was their cultural dress and none of my business!

BaMamma · 07/03/2025 22:38

I've been seeing more young women wearing keffiyeh performatively. Including a couple at an event about Israeli history, put it on very ostentatiously after the event had begun.

It was clearly not cultural. It was political in this case.

I think it's preposterous that this is even a question tbh. The keffiyeh has been around a lot longer than the current media campaign to demonise Palestinians and people aren't going to just stop wearing them. My dad has loads of them, he's been wearing them since 1954 and he's unlikely to desist just because some busybody in a supermarket believes everything she reads.

How do you know?

JorgyPorgy · 07/03/2025 22:43

Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest, I think it’s nice. Let’s be grateful to live in a country where people can dress how they want . No one should have to feel afraid to dress how they feel

HermioneWeasley · 07/03/2025 22:46

It’s not part of the uniform and if it wasn’t intended as a political statement, it certainly has the potential to be read as one so it’s completely inappropriate and i would complain.

How do you know?

I wondered that too

In answer to the OP if the person wants to wear it and it doesn't compromise H&S I don't see that it's any business of customers.

Hyperquiet · 07/03/2025 22:48

I mean sounds completely appropriate in light of the genocide.

scorpiogirly · 07/03/2025 22:49

I agree. It isn't part of the uniform. You wouldn't be allowed to wear a baseball cap or a beanie etc would you?

offmynut · 07/03/2025 22:50

Op mind your own business get on with what your doing and let others be.

MammTorr · 07/03/2025 22:51

It's Ramadan!

PeriPeriMam · 07/03/2025 22:51

No. It's fine.

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 07/03/2025 22:51

I had at least 5 as a teen, we were wearing them all the time around 2010. Even if it wasn't cultural, maybe they're just making a comeback?

But you can wear a cross if you're Christian

HangryLikeTheHulk · 07/03/2025 22:51

What does “political” mean ? That the person might have empathy towards the poor civilians of Gaza, trapped in their homes and bombed
to smithereens ? That’s simply humanity.

Depends on the company

BrownieBlondie01 · 07/03/2025 22:53

We all used to wear them in the mid-2000s. The old emo years!

Bluh · 07/03/2025 22:56

It’s not a religious item and no, it shouldn’t be worn as it’s not part of the uniform

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 07/03/2025 23:08

If this is all you have going on, lucky you. It’s Ramadan, you have no idea their reason for wearing it unless you ask them. I think YABVU.

You have no way of knowing this.

It'll be because it's Ramadan. I work in a college and on Fridays many of the lads wear it in preparation for Friday prayers, but not the rest of the week. You're reading far too much into it as being a "political" statement and are making assumptions based on prejudice, be that intentional or subconscious.

A keffiyeh isn't a religious item.
