Whole bundle of smelly, smoky baby clothes from Vinted ☹️

I ordered a bundle of BNWT baby clothes from Vinted and they’ve arrived absolutely reeking of cigarette smoke 😩 so many lovely little clothes and they smell bloody awful. Nothing in the seller’s reviews to suggest that they’ve been selling smoky clothes, so no warning. I normally only buy stuff from sellers who explicitly state that they have a ‘smoke free home’ but this is the one time I didn’t bloody check, and I would hardly expect someone with a tiny baby to be smoking indoors anyway!

Two questions, really (one of them is an AIBU!)

  1. AIBU to give negative (but honest) feedback or suck it up because I didn’t check if the seller was smoke-free?

  2. Should I attempt to get the smell out so the clothes can actually be worn, or just bin them? Is it safe for my baby to wear them even after washing them or do the chemicals from the smoke linger in the clothes? They were inexpensive so I don’t mind binning them if need be, but it seems such a waste to throw them away as they are all unworn with tags, they just stink! If I keep them, how can I get rid of the smell and the chemicals?

Please be gentle with me, I’m having a bit of a tough time with PPA and have been making a lot of mountains out of molehills lately 😬

I don't know the rules on Vinted, but can you not return these and get your money back? No one in their right mind can possibly think it's okay to send out clothes that smell of smoke, baby clothes or otherwise.

Mervyco · 08/03/2025 05:49

Of course you are not being unreasonable. You are a new mother, with PPA, so things wll seem worse than they are.
Yes write a report on the clothes, they stink and you should not have to stand for that.
Wash the clothes on a long wash, and give them a couple of extra rinses if you want.
They should be OK to use then

HazelBiscuit · 08/03/2025 06:21

I’m long past the baby stage but there’s no way I would use them. However you feel about it is valid.

The good news is this isn’t a big deal really - you tried sincerely to do something good by saving some landfill. Most of the time that works brilliantly. This time didn’t go so well. But it sounds as if trying again either thru vinted or a new clothes purchase won’t hurt your family finances so thankfully there’s no significant harm done and you may have saved another family some $$ by warning about the smoke.

Hope you’re feeling a bit stronger soon OP. PPA is tough.

Once bought a dress like that. It stunk.
I'd complain. I do worry about the baby of the house it came from... all that cigarette smoke.

Thalia31 · 08/03/2025 09:06

Erm werent you going to wash them to begin with. I hope you will. Smoke will be gone by washing. This are second hand clothes I really don't see the big deal. If you buying from a retailer of course that's an issue but that is vinted.

You really think that your washing machine will become contaminated? Get a grip FFS!

Quite. OTT or what? 🤷‍♀️🙄

I'm non smoker - you can smell cigarettes on clothes even if they are washed millions of times. I would return them.

Are you a sniffer dog?

Why are people so judgemental. How do you know the baby even lives in a house full of smoke. Could have been a present that was never given

Because the seller replied to me admitting it (RTFT!)

Of course I judge someone who smokes in a house with a tiny baby. It’s disgusting and neglectful.

Think it depends on how badly they do smell I had a handbag arrive from vinted once and the smell when I started opening the packaging 😳was no saving it and it went straight to the bin which was a massive shame

Wow I’m shocked they admitted it. What did they agree to do?

Atleast now you have proof and that’s hardly new with tags is it. You wouldn’t get a shop selling them like that.

Many many years ago we got a mattress off free cycle. Stank. We put it the dining room, left the patio doors open for days and used tons of febreeze, took it down the tip in the end. Nowadays hen I give away any items I state items come from non smoking but cat owner home.

MidnightMeltdown · 09/03/2025 16:18

Surely you were planning to wash them anyway?!

I've never smoked, but I went to plenty of pubs and clubs pre-smoking ban and would always come back with clothes reeking of cigarette smoke, as did everyone else. You just put them in the wash Hmm

RTFT…I’ve answered that at least twice.

Thanks for the Hmm, really kind and helpful when I’ve explained that I understand why not all of my worries are rational at the moment. I didn’t ask if washing would get just get the smell out; I have grasped that washing clothes generally makes them smell of washing powder. I asked if any carcinogenic chemicals would be likely to LINGER in the clothes even after washing to help me decide whether it is safe to put them on my 11 week old baby.

Naive at best. Fellow smoker around children at worst?

Edited

If you repeat wash after an overnight soak in a mix of dilute vinegar and baking soda.they should be fine. Repeat soak if worried.

CaptainCabinets · 09/03/2025 22:33

I’m gonna soak them in the bath tomorrow with white vinegar and put them on a longer wash then dry them on the line and see what happens. I’ve just binned the little pram shoes because they can’t be washed and I don’t want to pass them on to someone else’s baby!

Did the seller offer a refund? Have you left a review yet?
