Whole bundle of smelly, smoky baby clothes from Vinted ☹️

I ordered a bundle of BNWT baby clothes from Vinted and they’ve arrived absolutely reeking of cigarette smoke 😩 so many lovely little clothes and they smell bloody awful. Nothing in the seller’s reviews to suggest that they’ve been selling smoky clothes, so no warning. I normally only buy stuff from sellers who explicitly state that they have a ‘smoke free home’ but this is the one time I didn’t bloody check, and I would hardly expect someone with a tiny baby to be smoking indoors anyway!

Two questions, really (one of them is an AIBU!)

  1. AIBU to give negative (but honest) feedback or suck it up because I didn’t check if the seller was smoke-free?

  2. Should I attempt to get the smell out so the clothes can actually be worn, or just bin them? Is it safe for my baby to wear them even after washing them or do the chemicals from the smoke linger in the clothes? They were inexpensive so I don’t mind binning them if need be, but it seems such a waste to throw them away as they are all unworn with tags, they just stink! If I keep them, how can I get rid of the smell and the chemicals?

Please be gentle with me, I’m having a bit of a tough time with PPA and have been making a lot of mountains out of molehills lately 😬

Wash them with white vinegar as PP suggested, and then do a normal wash. If you can't bring yourself to use them, then please wash and take to the charity shop. Stops the waste of them being thrown away.

Just a thought, if the clothes have never been worn, there may never have been a baby :( and that might explain destructive behaviour like smoking. I would say clothes not as described, rather than giving any details.

There is definitely a baby as she’s selling worn clothes of all sizes as well as new.

Sadly some people are just scumbags who smoke around babies 🤷🏼‍♀️

Leave honest feedback but won’t you be washing them anyway? Surely you wash even new clothes?

They are second hand clothes. It’s a bit much to assume someone was blowing smoke in the baby’s face and they weren’t covered in heroin.

it’s shit for you you got clothes that smell like smoke. Can we perhaps stop acting like they were covered in blood and heroin?

YourHappyJadeEagle · 06/03/2025 23:06

The smell will come out and there won’t be anything harmful left in the fabric.
Wash on a cool wash first with just detergent, no fabric softener.
Check for any smell.
If smell gone you can wash again on a higher temperature just to put your mind at rest and use fabric softener if you usually do.

ClairDeLaLune · 06/03/2025 23:15

Dunno, my brother is a heavy smoker and his clothes still smell after being in the wash. Maybe wash them twice and see what they're like then. Oh and YADNBU, what the seller has done is grim.

If they stink of smoke, it’s not just an occasional fag though is it. And now all the risks are known about second-hand smoke, and potential links to SIDS. They should do better.

cherish123 · 06/03/2025 23:21

Don't buy second hand baby clothes. You can buy them for very cheap prices in the supermarket.

HughGrantsfurrysquirrel · 06/03/2025 23:24

Tell me about it. I've previously bought things on Ebay that have arrived reeking of stale ciggies.

Aside from the smell though, are the clothes in good condition? If so, just give them a couple of gentle washes, and add some nice Fairy fabric softener.

To be honest, if i buy anything second hand i always give it a wash before wearing regardless.... You don't know where it's been!!

Not doubting the cigarrette smell, which is vile, but could it be that the seller might've had a wood burning stove? These can leave an unpleasant odour on clothes too.

mumsickles · 06/03/2025 23:26

Resell them on vinted

Supersimkin7 · 06/03/2025 23:29

Wash them normally and be calm. Your stress is harming the baby way more, no matter what MN goad you to panic about.

No, don't pass the problem on to someone else, that's a shitty trick.

cheerupbuttercup · 06/03/2025 20:58

I wouldn't use them. No chance would I put my baby in clothes from a smoking house- even when washed. I know that's totally irrational but I couldn't bring myself to do it.

Yes, it is totally irrational. What do you think is going to happen?

They could have been stored at a relative’s who smokes. Anything. No one knows. They are second hand clothes. I agree through - I wouldn’t want smoke at all around a baby. But the mental gymnastics of “‘maybe this woman SMOKES CIGARETTES because her baby is dead so her life is worthless” is insane.

wash them. Or send them back. It’s not a massive drama that requires a village to fix.

Also op says said that clothes smelling of smoke is the same as putting a lit cigarette in her baby’s mouth so I’m not 100% sure I trust her on how much it smells.

Of course I do, this isn’t some ‘gotcha’ moment Hmm

The point is that it’s pretty rank to sell baby clothes as BNWT when they are absolutely reeking of fags!

No, I didn’t say that, did I? I said that it is how I would FEEL, not that it is the same. Clearly you’ve never experienced anxiety because it isn’t rational. I know it isn’t the same.

Stop trying to gaslight me, the clothes absolutely fucking stink. Happy to post them to you for a sniff. Although perhaps you won’t be able to smell them as your insistence on defending the seller makes me think you may perhaps be also be someone who smokes around babies?

I’ve explained already why I shop on Vinted, and it’s not the price.

Give them a good wash. They'll be ok!

(Wondering how I've survived - I grew up in a smoking home)

Return them or wash them and leave a bad review.

I am very sorry you have anxiety. Those are your two options.

And yes, of course, I’m currently lighting my two year old’s Rothman’s because her motor skills aren’t great yet.

CaptainCabinets · 06/03/2025 23:59

I mentioned that I’m experiencing PPA in my OP so I didn’t get people asking if I was usually so anxious. Didn’t expect people to be using it to get their sly little digs in, what a cheap shot to take Confused

Anyway, feedback has been left and the seller has admitted to being a smoking household. If the smoke is in the clothes, the smoke is also in the poor baby who lives there so I feel more sorry for that baby than myself!
