People openly stealing in Greggs

Xraytime · 05/03/2025 12:45

Whilst I was in the queue for a coffee, 4 different people came in and took several sandwiches, doughnuts and drinks.

They were not together.

I feel like Greg’s need to put every behind the counter, I can’t see how it’s sustainable long term.

I see this at different Greggs aswell but there will normally be just one person. Today was shocking.

That’s a shame but I don’t see why the staff at Greggs should have the additional work of fetching sandwiches and drinks for customers when they’re making hot drinks etc and working the till .
They are busy enough as it is in the 2 that are near me and the one in the small town I often travel to .
I haven’t seen theft myself from any of those branches of Greggs .
Where I live is mixed income mixed social status but I’d say that most are decent people ( small town Scotland)

I do agree, totally. I honestly do.

But what 'serious consequences' are there to threaten these scumbags with?

Even if there was room is prisons, that's not a deterrent. They've likely already got criminal records and/or are living a life where having where its no impediment anyway.

Fines don't work because these type of people are either let off, just don't pay, or pay about £1.74 per week which costs more to administer.

Cut their bloody hand off that might work or tattoo thief across their face....

The world is in a right state , its frightening. There's no law and order anymore. The government's answer to more crime is to reduce the police numbers, not send criminals to prison . Its almost as if they're encouraging it. What's going on? It's not just the UK it's everywhere.

There was a programme on shoplifting last month. Apparently, the most stolen item is denture fixative.

It might come to that if/when we have sharia law.

Perhaps those who sell sandwiches and other lunchtime delights should make it less able for people to steal?

At one place of work there was a sandwich bar across the road in a covered market. It was not much larger than a kiosk really. There was only room for two people and a mountain of bread and sandwich filler.

The queue used to stretch for a long way around the market, mostly single file, they offered the best sandwiches for miles around. They had no room for anyone to nick anything.

I see this happening daily in supermarkets, they target booze, laundry items and chocolate. Staff and security cannot touch the shoplifters and the shoplifters are aware of this. Whatever happened to a citizens arrest? The law needs to change as it is getting worse. I feel sorry for the staff as it really is distressing for them.

Citizens arrest only works when there are police relatively close by, they actually bother to turn up, and the actually bother to arrest. Unfortunately they’re only interested in serious crimes and thought crimes, so you’d be waiting forever if you arrested a shoplifter as they simply can’t be arsed to attend. But they’d soon attend if the offender phoned them claiming they had been assaulted and held against their will. Law and order has broken down.

My local Morrison's has now put all spirits in locked cages. You need to ask a member of staff to open a door to make your selection. Security tags evidently not a deterrent. Very grim.

I think life is not a simple class war.

My daughter's friend is from a wealthy family, is studying in London, living rent-free in a modern 2 bed flat in Fitzrovia (posh bit just west of Tottenham court road) owned by rich granny. Rich, but shoplifts frequently.

"The rich" pay huge amounts of tax by the way,
"The top 10% of taxpayers paid 60% of all income tax in 2023–24, up from 35% in 1978–79."

The billionaires with wealth offshore pay less of course, but that's a very small number of people.

The top 10% also have about 60% of the wealth, so that sounds about right doesn't it.

Actually, no

The top ten per cent of income tax payers earned 35.1 per cent of total income in 2024-25 and paid 60.2 per cent of income tax, up from 52.9 per cent in 2005-06.

So they're paying twice as much, compared to the value of the work they actually put in.

They did 30% (value, rather than hours) of the work in the UK, and paid 60% of the NHS, schools, pensions, benefits and everything else.

I love a Greggs, judge away from the lofty heights of your high horse.

What is it with these posters who think they are oh-so-superior with their snobby, judgy, comments? News flash people: we don't care about what you do/don't eat/drink, it's boring.

Actually, no. I said about 60% of the wealth, not income. They leverage that wealth for 'off-book' income that reduces or avoids tax and is not included in the figure you gave for income. Of course the figures are skewed by the super-rich, and look much worse up at their end.

FozzieP · 07/03/2025 07:58

We have free coffees in Greggs for a year but haven’t taken one yet as every Greggs we’ve been in to, the tables have been filthy and the clientele looked pretty awful as well - as tho’ they needed to/would choose to be stealing from the shop.

strawberrybubblegum · 07/03/2025 08:01

Still wrong

In 2020, the ONS calculated that the richest 10% of households hold 43% of all wealth.

Fairly reasonable, given that they're doing 30% of the work.

In fact, pretty much spot on for 99% of the top 10%,. 9% of all wealth belongs to the top 0.1%, so in fact that 99% of the top 10% (ie excluding the top 0.1%) hold only 34% of the wealth. And do 30% of the work.

Yet somehow, the punitive tax policies - and the snarky comments - are aimed at that 99% of the top 10% who are doing more than their share of the work and paying for much more than their share of the state services and benefits.

'Thank you' would do.

Addicts do this all the time, they don't even run.. even say excuse me to the people queueing as they get to the shelves.
It stings a bit that the rest of us have to pay but I wouldn't want their life

I find this quite sad as when I was a support worker working for a local charity who specialise in helping those with addiction and homelessness Greggs was regularly donating to the hostel that we ran their surplus food at the end of the day.

Now I work in the railway so regularly stop off at various Greggs stores in the south and south east on my lunch breaks and have many times brought a homeless person food and drink.

With so many food banks and soup kitchens for the homeless these days and the kind hearted members of the public who will buy food and drink for homeless people and addicts most of these thefts are probably for financial gain.

57% (ONS Chancel and Piketty, 2021).

Was talking to a friend last night who works in a bakery in Leeds. The homeless come in for the leftovers at the end of the day. One man when it's cold comes in asks for hot water sits out of the way and sleeps in the warmth.

At the railway station in the evening are pop up soup kitchens where they can get a hot meal. Soups, chilli etc. there are many shelters with beds but it's still not enough. There's been a huge increase in homeless people she says.

One woman was given a pot noodle and asked the shop for hot water. . She said you can tell the newly homeless from the long term ones.

It's awful to hear when you're living in an area where there are only a few that so many suffer elsewhere. They're not druggies, alcoholics, immigrants just Yorkshire folks in dire straits.

NaneePolly · 07/03/2025 11:43

We don’t know the circumstances behind the person stealing but regardless when has stealing become an acceptable thing to do by anyone.

Yes, I have watched this happen in one the greggs in our town. The staff say they are not allowed to challenge it.

Most staff at Greg's are women, either under 21 or over 50. I wouldn't be putting myself at risk of violence, hepatitis or god knows what else from a junkie shoplifter, for minimum wage. Especially as the law is so screwed that I'd probably be charged with assault if I put my hands on them.

The price of inequality, a divided society and breakdown of trust and social norms. Rich people don't notice because they don't shop in Greggs, and buy their way out of crime, anti social behaviour etc. Public service that keep social order and things ticking over are defunded so we don't tax the rich. Ironically, the rich benefit from more equality too, not least improved mental health: equalitytrust.org.uk/why-more-equality/

This is absolutely true. Ignorant people just call them scum and haven't a clue what's going on right in front of them. They just blame people on benefits etc. They are clueless and part of the reason we have come to this.

I thought here there is a safety net and now a Labour government? What is happening because we pay a lot of taxes so not my fault the government do not use it property.

People voted tory for 14 years. They left a calamitous mess. Right wing mugs just blame Labour for everything, even though it's all their fault. They gave us the tories and brexit. Well done chaps.

Are you a paragon of virtue ? Do you feel the same about big corporations not paying their fair share of tax, which is stealing from the state and ultimately us ?
or is it just the poor helping themselves to a few sandwiches that you object to ?
