To give children pancakes for breakfast?

goodgodthereyouare · 04/03/2025 14:09

DC including step children had pancakes for breakfast.

Their mum who doesn’t usually have them weekdays had planned in advance to pick them up and have them until after dinner.

She is now arguing that they shouldn’t have had pancakes and sugar before school and pissed off that they’ve already had them which apparently means there’s no point in her having them after school now.

My DC will be having having pancakes again this evening.

Was it unreasonable to give SC pancakes for breakfast?

Assuming she didn’t tell you in advance she was planning on making pancakes with them for tea and was excited about it, then you haven’t done anything unreasonable. If you did know, it’s a tiny bit unreasonable but not something someone feeling secure would worry about, particularly since they were just premade pancakes you shoved in the microwave as a nod to shrove Tuesday! It’s not really about the pancakes. She feels like you ruined her fun plan for her children. She perhaps feels replaced or disrespected. But her reaction is beyond unreasonable and is totally counterproductive to her maintaining/ building a positive relationship with her kids. Hopefully the kids aren’t too upset.

It's Pancake Day.

All pancakes, all day

WiddlinDiddlin · 04/03/2025 14:48

I've had pancakes for breakfast, and I will absolutely have pancakes again for tea! I'd have them for lunch too but we haven't really got enough eggs/milk and if I don't have a protein shake my digestion will go on strike (it is verrrrrrrrrry dodgy, but no way am I not having pancakes on pancake day!!).

She's being a dick, for the sake of being a dick. Ignore her. And if youv'e got them for tea, give them pancakes again!

YANBU

It amazes me how people have so much energy for being uptight about finding joy in life.

Agreed! So they have pancakes twice! I'm sure the kids don't mind😆

It amazes me how people have so much energy to make pancakes for breakfast before school / work!!! we barely have enough time for a quick bowl of crappy cereal. Massive kudos to OP.

plus I love the idea of Pancake Day now meaning pancakes for every meal of the day. Brilliant!!!!

Make a large batch of batter, use all week.

rosemarble · 04/03/2025 15:14

It's days like today when I realise that my Mother was more Catholic than I thought!
We would only have pancakes once a year, just with sugar and lemon. We did mark Shrove Tuesday, and she would have been a bit put out if we'd already had pancakes that day.

It took me a long time to break out of this (I am not religious).
I do still only ever have hot cross buns on Good Friday though. It's quite nice to have what I suppose are traditions now rather than a marking of religious festivals.

Catza · 04/03/2025 15:15

Wait till she finds out people can have pancakes on other days of the year too!
Ultimately, she is in charge of her own emotions. I wouldn't be able to find it in me to give it any thought, let alone question whether I am the unreasonable one.
"You think there is no point in them coming to you after school. No problem, we'll pick them up then. Bye".

stargirl1701 · 04/03/2025 15:20

Pancakes are literally breakfast food. There is no sugar in pancakes just the toppings.

HelmholtzWatson · 04/03/2025 15:24

Pancakes are a breakfast/brunch food in our house. YANBU.

Make a large batch of batter, use all week.

can also use the rest for toad in the hole or yorkies

we always have pancakes for breakfast on Christmas Day and the rest of the mix gets turned into yorkies

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/03/2025 15:31

YANBU you can't have too many pancakes. I had pancakes for breakfast this morning. I made the batter last night and it doesn't take long to fry them.

thatmistylight · 04/03/2025 15:33

It’s pancake day ffs! I had pancakes for breakfast and tea as a kid, it did me no harm

steff13 · 04/03/2025 15:37

You gave them pancakes for breakfast and now they're probably not going to get into a top university! For shame!

Seriously, what would happen if they had pancakes twice in one day? I'd ignore her.

Moonlightdust · 04/03/2025 15:39

Nah. It’s pancakes for breakfast and dinner in my house! Fgs how is one day going to affect them? Actually homemade pancakes are a good source of protein and can be eaten with a wide range of savoury foods or fruit!

ErrolTheDragon · 04/03/2025 15:46

Her loss, missing the fun of pancake day with her kids. What weird attitude.

Of course YANBU, OP.

MsSquiz · 04/03/2025 15:47

@goodgodthereyouare did I read your update correctly?

Because the kids had pancakes for breakfast, she isn't having them after school?

Wow. There are no words for some people

Secularbeaver · 04/03/2025 16:06

My fave day of the year and my 3 year old is having them for every meal (I did hide some carrot and apple in his because he won't eat anything that isn't beige 👀😂)

Elphamouche · 04/03/2025 17:08

It’s pancake day… pancakes. All day. She’s batshit.

Chillilounger · 04/03/2025 17:29

We had pancakes for breakfast, DD had pancakes in school, we had pancakes after school and no doubt D's will have more pancakes at scouts tonight! I mean if you can't have double or triple pancakes on pancake day.........

steff13 · 04/03/2025 17:31

Elphamouche · 04/03/2025 17:08

It’s pancake day… pancakes. All day. She’s batshit.

Right! Eat pancakes for all three meals. Plus snacks and dessert! It's one day a year.

Mydahliasareshit · 04/03/2025 17:37

Nigella's kids don't seem to have suffered unduly from growing up in a pancake loving household. Let it go in one ear and out the other.

hby9628 · 04/03/2025 17:41

lol. We had pancakes for breakfast today. Sometimes we even have them when it's not pancake day. We are that crazy in this house.

She's a loon.

CarpetKnees · 04/03/2025 17:44

Of course YANBU.

My (adult) dd told me recently that the 3 years she was in cubs were just the best, because it meant they had pancakes at Breakfast Club, then Pancakes at home for tea, then Pancakes at cubs as well.

They all seemed to manage the sugar rush just fine.

LBFseBrom · 04/03/2025 17:47

You were not at all unreasonable. Eating things like that is bette at breakfast time anyway, it metabolises more easily and as a one off, nothing wrong with them having them again tonight.

Kissedbyfire1 · 04/03/2025 17:48

rosemarble · 04/03/2025 15:08

Make a large batch of batter, use all week.

My DC (now adults) often had pancakes for breakfast. Make a big jug of batter and use it over two or three days. Spoiler alert- you can have pancakes on days that aren’t Shrove Tuesday!
