And what the significance is of tuna in oil, brine or spring water is? Are you meant to use them for different things, is there any that's better than another..or is it just personal preference?

Tuna in oil is oily
Tuna in brine is salty
Tuna in spring water is less salty and oily
Depends on your preference tbh

Catza · 03/03/2025 21:47

If you make tuna mayo, you'd probably want to use tuna in brine or water (I personally never noticed the difference between the two). If you are eating it straight up, oily tuna is more palatable.

frogpigdonkey · 03/03/2025 21:51

I've never seen the point of buying it in oil, it's a low fat protein for me so it just seemed pointless! I used to get it in brine but now I get it in spring water and add salt if it needs it. Mostly use for tuna mayo and tuna pasta. For tune mayo however you buy the tune my tip is to use small amounts of real mayo and add a bit of lemon juice and salt to lighten it up and for flavour!

takealettermsjones · 03/03/2025 21:55

Iirc the salt content in the brine and spring water ones is pretty much the same so I just buy whichever of those is on offer!

soupyspoon · 03/03/2025 21:57

I only buy them in oil, the flavour is vastly superior.

Same, tuna in sunflower oil is definitely nicer than the rest.

ThinWomansBrain · 03/03/2025 22:02

I don't use tuna often, & usually buy it in spring water.
I was making a tuna and bean salad, and the recipe said to either use tuna in water and add olive oil to the salad, or use tuna in oil.
I think it said to use a decent quality if you were using tuna in oil, but it was great.'

I dont buy in brine because I share it with the cat, and avoid her having too much salt,

UnNiddeRides · 03/03/2025 22:09

If I was making a tinned tuna Niçoise salad I’d use tuna in oil & use some of th oil to make the dressing. When I make tuna pasta bake I use tuna in water (drained) as I add a shitload of mozzarella which is greasy anyway.

Coffeeishot · 03/03/2025 22:12

I agree tuna in oil is better I think it makes a far superior tuna mayo, I don't like draining brine it smells weird.

Ha! I’ve got a 25 & a 27 yr old still at home, so it’s often an emergency meal when they invite friends unexpectedly.

bungobungobungo · 03/03/2025 22:31

Get Waitrose tuna in oil - it's so densely packed I have difficulty getting it out the tin, and the flavour is lovely. Salads, sandwiches even pasta.

emanresu24 · 03/03/2025 22:33

I only buy it in water so I can add fresh ingredients, I don't use sunflower oil in anything.

CharlotteCChapel · 03/03/2025 22:35

I find the ones in oil are better for cooking and the one in water/brine for salads. I can comment on tuna sandwiches as I hate them.

ExIssues · 03/03/2025 23:46

Thanks all some good tips there!

Calories. I only ever use tuna in spring water or brine.

DevilledEgg · 04/03/2025 00:30

It's all the same. Tinned tuna is basic. If you want "superior" tuna, buy a steak from the fishmonger. That's another level.

MyCatNamedCookingFat · 04/03/2025 02:37

I miss Sainsbury's tuna in olive oil.

It was so so good. Very little mayonnaise needed.

HollyNollydoo · 04/03/2025 03:12

You could get oil and then rinse it?

Yeah, no emergency Tuna pasta here now☹️😀

RatedDoingMagic · 04/03/2025 09:13

I use tuna in spring water because I drain off the water and give it to the cat as a special treat, which I wouldn't do with brine or oil.

MinnieCoops · 04/03/2025 09:19

The calories are much higher in oil but it tastes better.

Cassy2000 · 04/03/2025 09:22

Sunflower oil isn’t great for you so I use spring water.

Is it not ?

StrawberrySquash · 04/03/2025 09:25

In oil is much tastier and I read it keeps some of the good omega threes better than brine or water.
