To have laughed out loud at this retail worker

Today I went to a highstreet branch for some painkillers. I asked the lady behind the counter if they had some cocodomol. She said 'yes, we have our normal cocodomol and our max strength'. I asked if I was allowed to come and read the box and she said no (behind the counter so fair enough) I then asked if she could please explain the difference between the 2, I obviously meant the difference in strength in the active ingredient. Her honest to God, genuine response was 'yes of course, this one is our max strength version...... and this one ....is not'😂I was so taken aback by the utter ridiculousness of her explanation that I had no idea to respond, I just laughed. Anyone had anything similar or did I just encounter a particularly unknowlegable retail worker ?

Someone needs to stand in the middle of this thread and blow a whistle!

Shmee1988 · 03/03/2025 20:48

kittensinthekitchen · 03/03/2025 20:45

But you're STILL calling her stupid!

Nope, I said what she said was silly. What she said was a bit stupid. I didn't say she was stupid. I say silly things at work all the time and I'm not stupid. (Oh watch me get flamed for saying I'm not stupid)... the grammar police are somewhere lurking ....

No clue why you thought you could go behind a service counter, especially at a pharmacy.
You probably threw her off with that batshit request.

You also did not phrase your question very well.
You laughed/chuckled in her face for no reason.

You must be so very proud of yourself for humiliating that lowly worker. Go you!

🙄

fatphalange · 03/03/2025 20:51

🤣 (at you)

Redlocks30 · 03/03/2025 20:51

My mistake 😀

Like saying you've got an English degree when you haven't?

GlenCoco4 · 03/03/2025 20:51

I’d have laughed in your face for expecting to be allowed behind the counter.

Have you even read why I asked if that was permitted?

🙄

Did you read why I asked if it was permitted? Or just jump to the conclusion that I'm stupid? Just curious

Giveyerballzatug · 03/03/2025 20:54

I think everyone should have to work retail for at minimum,a year! You'll realize how crazy the majority of the public actually are and how people really think they are better than the workers. I had a customer ask me where the gluten free Tylenol was🤦 I told them to check the first aid section next to the gluten free band aids😁

So not only did you laugh at her, you decided to start a thread about her on a public website. You are horrible, OP.

kittensinthekitchen · 03/03/2025 20:55

I honestly, truly don't know. As I've explained up the thread, the store has a big wall lined with perfumes, medicines and expensive skin care and 3 little islands where you pay for things. All of the stuff is in locked cabinets. The one for the medicines is in the middle. The one to the left and to the right is for perfume and for skin care, and customers are allowed to wander behind the counter so I asked the lady if I wad allowed to read the box. So no, based on the lay out of the shop, it wasn't at all obvious to me.

Well I guess some people have no sense of humour 😂

If you think a sense of humour= laughing at a retail worker, fine.
I just think it's rude, like others on here.

😂oh god, I agree with you - everyone should be made to work in retail for a certain amount of time. Maybe then, some customers would be more considerate and courteous, rather than just unpleasant and rude.

slashlover · 03/03/2025 21:05

Shmee1988 · 03/03/2025 17:35

I asked to go behind because in my local brach the tills are on little islands. There is one for the perfume counter which you can freely walk behind to look at the boxes. I asked if I was able to look and she said no, with no offering as to let me see the box. Max strength of anything usually has a higher dose of the active ingredient. I truly did believe that the question was obvious. And for the record for all of those assuming I have no experience in this, I also work in customer service and if I'd of given a customer such a stupid response to a question I'd of fully expected to be laughed at.

If you work in customer service then you know how stupid a lot of the general public is and someone could genuinely be asking the question she answered.

I wasn't mean I didn't belittle anyone. She gave an answer that made me laugh. End of. It was a silly answer. I wasn't unkind or rude. Christ alive.

What is your AIBU then? What do you think you may have unreasonable about, if it wasn't laughing at the sales assistant?

So you gave her a snarky, sarcastic response instead of saying "Actually madam, all tylenol is gluten-free and you'll find it in the first aid section"?

Some people are just ignorant, pathetic and ableist - neither minimum wage workers, or imaginary literature degree-holders are exempt.

CaptainFuture · 03/03/2025 21:23

Nameftgigb · 03/03/2025 17:12

It wasn’t a hard question though was it? A little bit of common sense wouldn’t go amiss, no matter what her wages were. The op is trying to buy what are quite dangerous drugs, she should have been able to read the box to her at least.
Op I had to chuckle to myself when ordering a salad once, and the waitress had to offer whether I wanted balsamic vinegar or fajita sauce with it, but was unable to pronounce either. I could have helped her out tbh because I knew what she was trying to say, I feel a bit mean now 😞

So you laughed at someone struggling to know how to pronounce some words? How's your Gaelic/Cymraeg?

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 03/03/2025 21:23

Shmee1988 · 03/03/2025 18:00

I do actually have a degree in English language and literature so I'm happy to discuss. Not really the point of my thread though 🙄

It's poor form usually to correct grammar but you are asking for it here. I hope you aren't teaching English.

and if I'd of given a customer such a stupid response to a question I'd of fully expected to be laughed at.

No, I read what you said. I simply was making light of it and explaining that it's hard dealing with customers in retail for many different reasons because they tend to get defensive by taking the whole thing way to seriously and personally. It obviously made you feel like you were being judged. It was only your phrasing that made it sound funny. If you had asked how much of a difference or something, I'm sure the response would have been different. Which also goes back to my point that it should be mandatory to work in retail so you understand both sides. We'd end up with better customers and employees all around. I've done it for 35 years and it's just my opinion. I'm not judging you, just saying💁

CaptainFuture · 03/03/2025 21:23

Exactly. Is it because serving staff and retail workers are low paid, do you think? So entitled and rude.
