To have laughed out loud at this retail worker

Today I went to a highstreet branch for some painkillers. I asked the lady behind the counter if they had some cocodomol. She said 'yes, we have our normal cocodomol and our max strength'. I asked if I was allowed to come and read the box and she said no (behind the counter so fair enough) I then asked if she could please explain the difference between the 2, I obviously meant the difference in strength in the active ingredient. Her honest to God, genuine response was 'yes of course, this one is our max strength version...... and this one ....is not'😂I was so taken aback by the utter ridiculousness of her explanation that I had no idea to respond, I just laughed. Anyone had anything similar or did I just encounter a particularly unknowlegable retail worker ?

She didn't misunderstand. She just didn't know the answer and said the first thing that popped into her head, rather than doing the expected thing and reading the box.

You have no idea if that is the case but you keep doubling down if it makes you happy.

She didn't make a mistake. If she'd of given me incorrect information then that would have been a mistake. She just pointed to one box and read it's name and did the same with the other. That did not in any way answer what I asked, therefore it was funny. It was a silly thing to say but not a mistake. If she'd of tried to give me the info I needed and got it wrong, of course I'd not have laughed.

"If she'd of"

If she'd HAVE.

Redlocks30 · 03/03/2025 19:38

Rather than laughing out loud AT her, wouldn't it have been kinder to say, 'Oh, sorry-what I meant was, can you tell me how many mg of codeine is in each so I can compare the two?'

WeylandYutani · 03/03/2025 19:36

I would answer the question as the retail worker did too. I am autistic, and that answer would have made perfect sense to me. For you then to laugh would make me feel like I had done something wrong, and would have had a major impact on me for the rest of the day.
If you wanted a more specific answer, then you need to be more specific in how you ask it.

My sons autistic and he'd have struggled with the question too so he'd seek clarification. That's the difference customer service training makes.

Edited your original post now! Yes you were rude for “laughing out loud at the retail worker” and BU arguing about it for 2 1/2 hours with everyone that disagreed with you!

This.

I wouldn't have asked to go behind the counter, just ask if you can look at both boxes. I've never had a problem with that, they just put both boxes on the counter, you read them and choose which you want to buy then they put the other back. Or ask to see the pharmacist. You do sound quite rude, laughing at her.

Exactly. Why couldn't she just show you the boxes?

Yes, that's the sensible thing to do. We all need to clarify on occasion.
No need to laugh at someone, really.

FoolishHips · 03/03/2025 19:46

ItsLateItsDark · 03/03/2025 17:14

What was you expecting her to say?

She was expecting her to tell her the amounts of paracetamol and codeine. 500mg paracetamol 8mg codeine is the usual. Solpadeine max have 12.8mg codeine.

I'd have laughed too. I'd have been insulted if she was using language aimed at 8 year olds or whatever the average reading age is in the uk.

And I think it's ridiculous that someone selling medication to the public was not able to answer what the difference is between two products. And no, if someone shows a lack of knowledge in their role I don't think it's unreasonable to question that.

She should have just asked the pharmacist to answer you but maybe new at her job and nervous or was just being a wise guy.

Nobody asked her to??

FoolishHips · 03/03/2025 19:48

I'm autistic too and I prefer the answer I'd have given.

BunnyLake · 03/03/2025 19:48

So after you laughed, then what happened?

BunnyLake · 03/03/2025 19:52

WillIEverBeOk · 03/03/2025 19:38

"If she'd of"

If she'd HAVE.

Yes, I could laugh out loud at an adult saying of instead of have if they asked me something, but I’m not that rude!

BunnyLake · 03/03/2025 19:54

Shmee1988 · 03/03/2025 18:00

I do actually have a degree in English language and literature so I'm happy to discuss. Not really the point of my thread though 🙄

Seriously?

Shmee1988 · 03/03/2025 19:57

BunnyLake · 03/03/2025 19:54

No, of course not lol !!!

Ugh. Reminds me of when I was a barmaid and some rude old bat was asking me what all the different beers tasted like, I said "I just pull the pints I haven't tasted them all". She'd had an attitude from the start though. People are horrible.

Bridie1980 · 03/03/2025 19:58

I actually heard someone ask a similar question in a pharmacy this evening and they got an explanation as to the difference in milligrams of the regular versus max version. Most people who work behind the counter in pharmacies are put on a training course to give them some familiarity with what they are handing out over the counter.

Yes, but in pointing it out are you not bring just as rude. The point is, she said something funny and it made me laugh. If I'd have said ' that's a stupid thing to say'that would've been rude. I just laughed, she laughed. I was in a hurry so I told her not to worry and purchased the normal ones.

I can’t believe people with customer facing roles have to endure people like you.

Shmee1988 · 03/03/2025 19:57

Well thank goodness for that lol.

As we weren’t there it’s hard to say for sure if you came across as a mean girl but as you've made a thread about it I’m thinking you laughed because you found her stupid? which seems mean.

So how did the encounter end?

Redlocks30 · 03/03/2025 20:00

I do actually have a degree in English language and literature

Are you now saying that you lied about your degree?! That's bizarre as well.

Quite. However, I assume that should she of asked you what the difference between and lager and a spirit is, you'd of been able to answer that? And if not, I can only guess that youd still probably not have said 'ones a spirit and one is not' ....

She was difficult to deal with. Is the "old bat" bit really necessary?

TurbulentPriest · 03/03/2025 20:03

faithspikebuffy · 03/03/2025 17:34

She's probably done in with the amount of stupid questions

Like in a pub when people ask
What's the difference between an 8oz and 16oz steak?
What's a whole chicken?
Does the fishcake contain fish?

Yes, I suspect the OP might have mistaken sarcasm for stupidity…
