To think green is quite neutral as a colour?

Out today with DD(2) wearing a puddle suit as where we were was very muddy. I put her in this

Absolutely everyone referred to her as ‘he.’ It doesn’t bother me and in fairness the puddle suit is a hand me down from her brother but I’d have thought the outfit was definitely neutral rather than boy?

Yes that particular item is very much neutral. If I saw a kid in it I wouldn’t guess either way.

Amd yes generally green is quite neutral as a colour.

DappledThings · 02/03/2025 21:05

Yes, but people are really weird about the colours of children's clothes.

DD was once wearing a blue cardigan and someone asked me "what's his name". When I said her name the woman got really huffy and said it was my fault people thought she was a boy if I put her in blue. I hadn't actually been bothered at all what sex a random passerby thought my baby was but yeah, people are weird about you not following their random assignment colours to sex.

It is, but I once put toddler ds in a navy coat with little foxes on it and when I expressed bemusement that he'd been called "the little girl" was told that things with little motifs on them were clearly girls' clothes.

I would have thought that both yours and my item would be gender neutral but hey ho.

Timeandemotion · 02/03/2025 21:05

I think its a lovely colour suit OP.
I agree with you that it's gender neutral. I would never assume your little one was a boy in that, unless possinly she had a short back and sides.

Moonnstars · 02/03/2025 21:05

People don't generally look that closely. My son was wearing a hat when we went into a restaurant the other week and the waitress asked whether the girls were ready to order. It was only when she came back with the drinks she realised he was a boy (no he doesn't have long hair either, I think she just took a quick glance and assumed we had two girls!).

Skodasuperb · 02/03/2025 21:08

It's certainly not a creative colour, thats for sure.

Cheepcheepcheep · 02/03/2025 21:08

DD had something similar to this when she was about 1: https://flossieandgeorge.co.uk/products/kids-waterproof-raincoat-with-cotton-lining-6m-4y?variant=48468410106148&country=GB&currency=GBP&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAqmcZfC_TghoD1sZPS_0QJ00CB9Hn&gclid=Cj0KCQiAoJC-BhCSARIsAPhdfSi1qQUZFs2fPEfTknuIAlb1v9HFoZtRQBy510ytgrjW4tWqEwUOKggaAkC3EALw_wcB

I got he pronouns every single time I had her out in it 😆 she had short hair as it hadn’t grown in yet but pretty much every time I said ‘oh thanks! She’s…’ people would panic and backtrack or gabble. I didn’t care, it was funny (she now has a brother who has longer eyelashes than her, being gorgeous has nothing to do with the sex you are!)

Popskipiekin · 02/03/2025 21:08

Odd. People gender stereotyping the activity perhaps (oh you’re letting your child play in muddy puddles - must be a boy!). 🙄

PebbleDashAtOne · 02/03/2025 21:12

Careful OP, your daughter will sprout a willy at this rate!

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 02/03/2025 21:13

I'd definitely consider that gender neutral.

I had a blue car seat for DD, I saw someone I knew in a shop when she was newborn and I'd put the car seat in the trolley. They asked 'his' name, I cheerfully said she was a girl, and was met with 'but why is the seat blue?!' ermm... because my car at the time was blue and I thought it would be nice to match...

Mshonie · 02/03/2025 21:15

People are funny! She hasn’t got much hair I suppose, not enough for a pony tail so that probably doesn’t help.

fourelementary · 02/03/2025 21:18

I reckon it’s hair rather than clothing most people go by- dd could have flowery leggings and a pink cardigan on and still be called he as she had a funny Mohawk thing going on with her hair as a baby… whereas ds would be in full camo colours or “boyish” dungarees and get called she as he had curly hair!

I was going to say that as well.

Tintackedsea · 02/03/2025 21:31

@DappledThings

I had that! DD was about a year old and wearing jeans when a woman asked "his" name. I politely told her and she got all cross with me and pointed out "his trousers are BLUE ". I mean jeans normally are. I was wearing blue jeans myself. So weird.

(P.s. LOVE your username! One of my favourites!)

sierramiller · 02/03/2025 21:41

I remember when my (bald) toddler was wearing a white coat with flowers on. Somebody asked me his name. Was annoyed when i revealed her name as female

sierramiller · 02/03/2025 21:41

Obviously girls have long hair. Even when their babies

I'm not sure people even really look properly anyway. I had DS in full navy blue and he had a truck in each hand and still got asked what her name was😂

Mumwithbaggage · 02/03/2025 22:32

I was once told by a random stranger to put a bow on my baby so people could tell as it would help them. I didn't.

MasterBeth · 02/03/2025 22:56

People are weird. I couldn't give a shiny shit about anyone misgendering a baby because they were wearing green. Their ridiculous assumption. To me, they just look dim.

I had the same - ‘What’s his name?’, said DD’s name, ‘but he’s wearing blue!’
The stupid thing is it was a blue dress! She was so angry about it as well.

Busybeemumm · 02/03/2025 23:45

When my DS was a toddler he just liked everything pink so let him where older DDs clothes happily. Once when out a lady got quite annoyed when she asked his name assuming a girl and told her and she said but he is dressed in pink? She then proceeded to kneel down to his level and explain that 'blue was for boys and pink was for girls'. Had to make a swift exit! DS still likes the odd pink shirt😄Very annoying and still remember it many years later.

kierenthecommunity · 03/03/2025 00:40

I had this when DS was wearing a red snow suit. It had a navy lining in the hood so I didn’t think it was especially feminine but an old man asked what her name was 😂

Flamingoknees · 03/03/2025 12:15

I had a few green and yellow baby clothes for my son, as we didn't know his sex before birth. He was frquently mistaken for a girl when he wore them. I think it was the colours combined with huge eyes. Green is neutral in my eyes.

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/03/2025 15:42

I think the puddle suit is relatively gender neutral. Imo more so than the red jacket linked upthread. The common denominator I can see is that both are left over right fastenings when girls are right over left. Like this. www.matalan.co.uk/childrens-clothing/2-pack-baby-ribbed-sleepsuits-newbron-12mths/15260679.html

Diningtableornot · 03/03/2025 15:45

It's a fun suit for a small child, who cares what gender. People made assumptions probably based on her short hair not what she's wearing.
