Worried about WW3 after the Zelensky meeting

Genuinely shocked like most people after witnessing Vance & Trump descend into ‘The Real White House Husbands of Washington DC’. The world is looking very vulnerable right now. I’m not quite ready to build a bunker but it is seriously concerning.

Over the last couple of weeks, Australia has had sightings of Chinese war ships off the coast of Sydney. There is talk that Taiwan now looks very vulnerable to China. What about Australia though ? We’ve relied on the USA incase of a large case act war.

I fear Australia is a sinking ship.

I’ve been reflecting a lot on this and 2 things have come of this in my brain -

  1. This is probably how it’s always been but just behind closed doors.
  2. there is a real opportunity for the uk to build stronger relationships with Europe and Canada than ever before, healing the EU rift from leaving and uniting against a common enemy. I have to believe some good/unintended consequences are possible or it would be too depressing.
mumofoneAlonebutokay · 02/03/2025 14:19

Yanbu, I think about it all the time

Part of that though is being taught LOADS about ww2 throughout my education 😭 but yes I am very very worried, especially as a londoner.

NoraLuka · 02/03/2025 14:21

Is everything else in your life ok, OP? Not being sarky but sometimes these things have more impact if we’re not feeling great anyway - I actually cried after watching that interview but never would have done if I wasn’t already worried sick about DD2.

One good piece of advice I’ve had is to actively choose how you’re going to stay up to date with the news and not just keep watching rolling news or social media. So for example you only watch the evening news, or read a daily newspaper (online or paper) and then leave it at that. That cuts out a lot of the analysis about what might happen, a lot of which is just filling time on the 24/7 news channels.

OhDeerohDeerie · 02/03/2025 14:25

To be honest I think if your brain isn’t recognising it as a possibility these days, I think you would be unreasonable.

This isn’t the time that I want to start panicking or prepping. But I’m not feeling comfortable about world peace.

And if I had a teenage son I’d be taking him to the doctors to record his bone spurs, or autism etc. If I was cash rich, I’d consider how safe my savings and stocks were.

But the world will carry on turning, as it always does.

China has massive investment in Australia, they have a long lease on the port at Darwin and has investments in other ports, farming, water and I think energy too.

Lavenderfarmcottage · 02/03/2025 14:35

Thankyou, not really but this isn’t something that I am actually losing sleep over. I just don’t see my concerns reflected in the media and so I am on here.

I think for Australia this is significant because Europe has each other but we are isolated. In some ways that’s a coup but the brazen Chinese ships indicate that without allies we are sitting ducks.

If Trump is willing to publicly make an enemy of Zelensky and cut off a buffer between Russia and NATO countries then he wouldn’t care about Australia. We have for years been taught in school the significance of US-Aus as allies but not it seems that matters for nothing. Under Trump we would just be seen as a money pit & too far away to be of consequence.

This could protect us or make the transition to full ownership and control of Australia, even easier. I don’t know…

This is a good point, however I do also agree with the OP

Albanese spoke about the Chinese ships on Q&A last week. You should watch it on ABCiView to ease your fears.

ilovesooty · 02/03/2025 15:00

I wasn't shocked by the behaviour of Trump and Vance, in the sense that I felt it was predictable. I was disgusted and repelled by it.

If there's any prospect of our country being actively involved in war I take the view that the situation is out of my control so see little point in worrying about something I can't influence.

Yes I am worried - USA whether like it or not has so much influence on world economics. Trump is unstable and the people around him also seem to be unstable plus borderline sociopaths. Trump does not care for human rights if so many - women included. Having him and Putin leading two world powers - yes it’s unsettling. Plus Trump winning the election, Musk et Al - it’s sending a clear message out to those with shared values incl. far right groups across the world, which is also very very upsetting.

AquaPeer · 02/03/2025 15:05

Australia is one of the places I would be least worried. At all times really.

its almost like second hand hysteria- you aren’t part of the problem but want to feel involved in the drama? Not you personally obviously, but if this is a general Australian view.

take the view you guys had in Covid- that you had all the advantages to stay out of it and made the most of them

HRTQueen · 02/03/2025 15:16

China has been threatening Taiwan for some time

we won’t get involved with that and it’s hardly even been in our news (as Ukraine isn’t headline news across the world as it is here)

Putin started a war three years ago now the US is backing out a deal has to be made because Europe will not go to war with Russia it’s now about how collectively Europe brokers a deal, which is tricky as Europe is quite fragmented at present but they will and unfortunately it won’t be Ukraine coming out winning Putin will be allowed not to lose face

it’s not about what is right or wrong or history (as history repeats itself time and time again just plays out in different ways and shall continue to it’s the dark side of humanity) it’s about who has the most power, influence and wealth

Dotjones · 02/03/2025 15:18

Australia is about as safe as you can get. No legitimate case can be made for China, Russia or anyone else invading Australia. China's focus is on places like Taiwan, Nepal, Mongolia and Japan, countries that are close by and have a long history of interaction with the Chinese.

CatherineParr · 02/03/2025 15:28

There won't be a ww3. Remember the cold War? It was a cold War not a hot War because of mad (mutually assured destruction) due to nuclear weapons. Situation still stands.

Sakai · 02/03/2025 15:33

I think instant news 24/7 makes people a bit more anxious nowadays.

I just wondered if you were Australian, Aqua

I agree

and also the news has become more sensationalist on how it reports news, the language used the repeating particular phrase this keeps us watching

Agreed. The opportunity to heal Brexit wounds whilst keeping the US relatively friendly is a real chance for Starmer and his government. They could certainly use some good press.

Nice to see the Mail on Sunday throwing its support behind Zelensky.

Cesarina · 02/03/2025 16:12

I began wondering about the possibility of WW3 as soon as Russia invaded Ukraine. It remains in my mind but I manage to keep the worry at a low level, 1) because I try to stay optimistic that it won't happen, and 2) I am powerless to stop it if it happens.
I am disgusted with Trump and Vance. I detest it that 2 pathetic bullies, (Trump and Putin), have so much power, although they have their parties supporting them of course. And millions of Americans voted for Trump - Russian "elections" being a farce of course.
It's like the world has learned nothing from 2 World Wars, and these stupid, narcissistic twats can have such influence and place the world in jeopardy to satisfy their egos. Shameful and tragic.

TheTallgiraffe · 02/03/2025 16:20

How do those of you who are talking about "WW3" define that? There are plenty if wars and conflicts going on already. Britain becoming involved in a war doesn't make it a "world war".

YourAmplePlumPoster · 02/03/2025 16:28

I hope Starmer will be sending his 16 year old son to the battlefield. Nah. Not gonna happen.

Coolasfeck · 02/03/2025 16:35

There is now a once in a generation opportunity to break free of Americas grip. Investing in our defence industry and supporting our own social media companies will create jobs and grow our economies.

America wishes to be isolationist. Gradually ween ourselves off them, freeze them out and let them be isolated.
