Worried about WW3 after the Zelensky meeting

Genuinely shocked like most people after witnessing Vance & Trump descend into ‘The Real White House Husbands of Washington DC’. The world is looking very vulnerable right now. I’m not quite ready to build a bunker but it is seriously concerning.

Over the last couple of weeks, Australia has had sightings of Chinese war ships off the coast of Sydney. There is talk that Taiwan now looks very vulnerable to China. What about Australia though ? We’ve relied on the USA incase of a large case act war.

I fear Australia is a sinking ship.

I hope Starmer will be sending his 16 year old son to the battlefield. Nah. Not gonna happen.

Well no one’s 16 year old son is going into the battlefield so this is just a wasted thought

Yanbu, I think about it all the time

Part of that though is being taught LOADS about ww2 throughout my education 😭 but yes I am very very worried, especially as a londoner.

Really? As a born and bred Cockney, of boomer years, I’m not worried 🤷‍♀️. I’ve been hearing all the tub thumping since 1963 and the Bay of Pigs. There will be all sorts of things going on behind the scenes. 😉

Well it's not his bloody fault is it. He seems to be the only person trying to sort this mess out in a reasonable way.

BoldDreamer · 02/03/2025 16:54

I recommend checking out Robert Walker who fact checks, he really helped me with my worries as a lot of the media twist things to make it more scary by doing click bait articles.

Hes done a fair few posts on WW3 and also Ukraine, Russia etc. he runs a FB page called doomsday debunked.

I think instant news 24/7 makes people a bit more anxious nowadays.

I used to read the news and watch it every single day until covid when the fearmongering and hysteria tipped me over the edge and now I just don't engage with it at all.
I have a vague idea of what's going on in the world just from titles of threads on here etc.
My life is SO much better for it.
There's nothing I can do about whatever is happening so why bother being informed about it or worrying about it.
It's been a few years now since I decided to be ignorant about current affairs and so far I haven't identified any disadvantages

OhDeerohDeerie · 02/03/2025 14:25

To be honest I think if your brain isn’t recognising it as a possibility these days, I think you would be unreasonable.

This isn’t the time that I want to start panicking or prepping. But I’m not feeling comfortable about world peace.

And if I had a teenage son I’d be taking him to the doctors to record his bone spurs, or autism etc. If I was cash rich, I’d consider how safe my savings and stocks were.

But the world will carry on turning, as it always does.

Stop your scare mongering and find some sensitivity and empathy. Some people have lost loved ones in war and their world does stop turning.

There won’t be a WWIII.

Are you sure?

AquaPeer · 02/03/2025 19:35

Yep

CerealPosterHere · 02/03/2025 19:38

If I lived in Taiwan I’d be a bit twitched about China…..less so of I lived in Australia.

Friend of mine is like this, stopped reading and watching all news in covid. She was a bit surprised the other day to learn Trump is president of the USA again. I warned her she’ll fail an nhs dementia test if she’s not careful when they ask her who the prime minister is/president is and she hasn’t got a clue. 😁

I actually have a RAF hero in my family who died in combat. Usually having lost beloved ones who've died in combat makes the families less warmongering because they know the effect on them. Only politicians like war because it boosts their popularity back home. It appears to me that Starmer is flagging in the polls so he needs to get warmongering Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph on board. Apart from that, the Human Rights lawyers will be salivating as they can prosecute returning soldiers from Ukraine with "war crimes" and get huge payouts from public funds. Honestly, who would sign up today in the Armed Forces?

Same situation for my family and the thought of another war fills me with dread because I'd never want another family to experience what we have. To others the loss is just a statistic and they are just another soldier but to us he was a real person, a family member who's still missed dearly. I've said before there's no glory in war and inevitably people will die and not everyone will make it back. The best option all around is a peace deal but it seems to me all everyone wants is the minerals that Ukraine has at the moment.

Australia is about as safe as you can get. No legitimate case can be made for China, Russia or anyone else invading Australia. China's focus is on places like Taiwan, Nepal, Mongolia and Japan, countries that are close by and have a long history of interaction with the Chinese.

I am in NZ .. which lots of people think is even safer than Australia 😂.
last week there where Chinese warships doing live fire exercises in sea between Australia and NZ.. they gave insufficient warnings to aircraft and aircraft had to divert with little warning.
We are not that safe anymore.

Bamboozled5 · 02/03/2025 19:56

Whole heartedly agree with your post.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 02/03/2025 20:06

We are definitely not safe from China who are a much bigger threat than Russia. China invades Taiwan which means we all go down as Taiwan exports all the microchips we need. Maybe Trump is keeping his powder dry for Taiwan and Xi.

amigafan2003 · 02/03/2025 20:08

Starmer has pulled off an absolute masterclass of statesmanship today.

I'm certainly feeling alot better tonight than I was on Friday night!

FWIW I wholeheartedly support what Starmer is doing and my son started his Commando Preparation Course today with the Royal Marines.

Ukraine was one of his motivators in signing up actually.

There won't be a ww3. Remember the cold War? It was a cold War not a hot War because of mad (mutually assured destruction) due to nuclear weapons. Situation still stands.

Does it?

This only works if the nuclear superpowers are on opposite sides. Who is currently assuring the destruction of Russia if they decide to drop the bomb? Who is going to stop them invading NATO countries?

Australia is one of the places I would be least worried. At all times really.

its almost like second hand hysteria- you aren’t part of the problem but want to feel involved in the drama? Not you personally obviously, but if this is a general Australian view.

take the view you guys had in Covid- that you had all the advantages to stay out of it and made the most of them

You can make that argument about Russia but not China. China is currently flexing its muscles in Australian waters and the Australian navy is ill-equipped to deal with much in the way of challenge at the moment. Australia has always assumed that the US would come to its aid if need be due to the US's own pacific interests. However we can all see there are no guarantees anymore.

I would agree that China is making moves to au/nz now as a reaction to Trump, but I think it’s just posturing and China’s in a bit of a pickle themselves, they are literally testing the waters

1 we do have a lot of mutual investments going on, it is much cheaper to engage in economic negotiation than it is to go to war.

2 Albo and Wongs approach to keep talking to the Chinese works better than to piss them off with obnoxious racism of scomo needs to be remembered in the upcoming election. If you want war then vote for dutton.

3 make sure that we have strong production within Australia can provide our own food fuel infrastructure.

4 place ourselves as good partners within the region, which again I feel the Albo and Wong are doing

InWalksBarberalla · 02/03/2025 22:23

@YouAndMeVsTheWorld I agree with you for the most part - however it all does somewhat hinge on Xi Jinping behaving sanely as China fails. And my confidence in power hungry septuagenarians behaving sanely is somewhat low at the moment.
