Air tag tracking me but I don't own one

Hi just need a bit of advice on how these work. Last day or two my phone keeps telling me im near an air tag .. but I don't own one. From history it's only tracking me when I'm in my car. It shows every journey I made today. I asked my soon to be ex partner as he has one and he said why do I have his air tag on my phone? .. I don't have his on my phone! I never received notifications on his whereabouts when he used it and the history is only tracking where i have been not anyone else. He said he's not put it in my car but we are going through a break up due to emotional abuse on his part so I don't want to demand to see his as trying to avoid further conflict, is there any explanation for this other than he has hid one in my car? Only me and my DD been in car she's 9 and doesn't have one.

I think it’s to ‘stop stalking’ that you are notified if there’s an air tag repeatedly near you , so yes he’s out it in your car to track you , possibly there’s a way to block ?

Please come back with an update, OP.🙏

OP. You need to check everywhere. Under seats. Down cushions. Under the boot base where the spare tire is. Sometimes cars have a little compartment where the roof light comes on. Check everything you can. If you find it. I would take it and stick it down the seats on a local bus. So it’s still tracking something.

He's obviously freaking out about losing control and wants to track your moments and the time you’re spending with other people which is really worrying.
He may remove the tag himself now you have mentioned it. Keep an eye on if he appears around the car or wanting to check it.

If you do find it yourself and he realises you’ve removed it, that’s a loss of control and can cause further escalation of erratic and aggressive behaviour.

If you find one I’d definitely get the police involved too. So sorry you’re going through this.

You know where I they plug in computers to check and see what's wrong with your car it it reads code it would be hooked up there you can buy them at Walmart for 5 bucks

UmberUser · 10/03/2025 02:45

The trackers you can by at Walmart or they have apps on your phone as well

Look in the boot under the carpet if that is where the spare wheel is.

It's likely OP has dealt with it by now, she hasn't been back

This happened to my sister. Although it wasn’t an AirTag her ex husband knew all of her whereabouts suddenly after she told him she was leaving him due to cohesive control, emotional & financial abuse. He denied it all. The police were involved. She changed all her passwords, got a new phone and number and also changed her car once they split. Hope you get to the bottom of it.

Without (for once), reading all through the comments before replying, this seems strange. It would seem like someone has planted a tracker in your car, except you say you can see its location history. I dont know if they've been updated to do this, but if you can see the location history, is there a chance that someone has paired it to YOUR phone?

Do airtags only alert nearby iPhones that they might be being tracked without owner's knowledge, or would an airtag alert an android phone?

Android phones do not passively alert you, but you can download apps that will search for one. Only downside is to use it effectively, you need it running in the background and it you may find reduced battery standby. This one is actually made by Apple, havent tried it personally though.

Tracker Detect - Apps on Google Play

Tracker Detect looks for Find My compatible item trackers that may be with you.

I stand corrected on both above counts - it seems Android handsets from a couple of years ago can natively scan for trackers - just keep your bluetooth on (I never do), and iOS alerts of an AirTag do give you the option of seeing where you have been tracked.

What happened? Did you find one? Are you OK??

Weezypopsy · 23/04/2025 08:25

I know this is a couple of months old now but it’s a thread that regularly pops into my mind. I hope you are okay, OP. If you have time for an update, please do!
