that Zelensky has received? A genuine, warm embrace from Starmer and clear, considered and effective support for Ukraine.

Watch and learn Trump and Vance, you bullying, fucking self-serving excuses for human beings

It really moved me and I thought Zelensky looked like he was close to tears. That poor man needs to be treated like a hero.

Stripeyanddotty · 01/03/2025 22:48

Would be brilliant if Charles rescinded his invite to Trump - the icing on the cake!

Ablondiebutagoody · 01/03/2025 22:48

What's the clear, considered, effective support of which you speak?

Stripeyanddotty · 01/03/2025 22:50

The £2bn for arms?

I’m sure I just read that this is a loan guaranteed by frozen Russian assets.

I really hope that’s true.

Couldn’t have put it better myself!

SallyWD · 01/03/2025 22:53

Yes, I felt proud, and it was heartwarming after yesterday's upsetting scenes. I think Zelenskyy is also meeting the King tomorrow. He's getting the respect he deserves here.

^This.

I can't believe, after that appalling horror in the Whitehouse, that Starmer and The King would greet that orange slug into our country with open arms.

It's all show anyway, I'm sure. They probably can't stand Trump anymore than any other right-thinking person.

Hopefully Camilla will cry off with a headache...

Freedomishereandnow · 01/03/2025 22:54

Definitely, it made me feel emotional seeing Zelenskyy emotional after what he's had to go through the past couple of days. I have such huge admiration for him as a leader and my respect for Starmer has gone up as well, I'm glad he has clearly stated this country supports Ukraine.

BarneyRonson · 01/03/2025 22:56

Brits are the most welcoming nation in the world.

Haveanaiceday · 01/03/2025 22:58

I think Trump has embarrassed this country and the other European countries who visited and made a big fuss and show of goodwill. This was partly based on his assurances of support for Ukraine. Now he has insulted Zelenskyy and by extension the Ukrainian nation which has put us in a very difficult situation.

ExtraOnions · 01/03/2025 23:01

Whatever you think about the war, Zelensky is the democratically elected leader of another nation, and should be shown respect when invited to another country. It’s basic diplomacy.

I’m pleased we have Starmer in charge at the moment, imagine if May or Sunak had to deal with this. I think Starmer could play a leading role managing the fall-out from the White House meeting.

Ablondiebutagoody · 01/03/2025 22:51

I think that the behaviour of Trump, Vance and their minions leaves Russia in a far stronger position.

But it gives a stark choice to other states and regions. And there are all sorts of possibilities. It is scary when the world order is breaking down. But now we are facing reality, and we can't hide behind 'it might not come to that'.

There was a huge difference between the anti Nazi coalition in September 1938 (the Munich Conference, where the status of Czekoslovakia was decided without the Czekoslovakians present, sound familiar?), and September 1939.

Yes, that resulted in a pretty grim decade. But you only need to see what the Nazi regime went on to do to see that there comes a point where you have to draw a line.

Of course I am scared for the consequences. But the lesson of history is that giving in to authoritarian regimes has worse consequences in the medium term. Even if in the short term I won't be affected by allowing the bullies to win. In the end they will come for me.

Or if he issued an invitation for a State Visit to Zelensky. Trump might decide not to come, then!

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 01/03/2025 23:05

Whilst I did not vote for him I can see that our PM is a decent human, with a warm manner about him. Trump is a vile bully but we all know that....

LaurieFairyCake · 01/03/2025 23:07

Genuinely moving scenes with Starmer and Zelenskyy

Plus got really misty at the crowds cheering

This country FUCKING HATES BULLIES, it's literally in our DNA to have a sense of fairness and justice

Oh, I really, really hope that happens. I think it’s a load of old guff, but it would send a good, strong message to Trump.

lavendarwillow · 01/03/2025 23:14

Very heartwarming, I am so proud this meeting was able to take place today and I hope Zelensky is now feeling much stronger. He looked so down-beaten yesterday, heartbreaking if I'm honest because we are all so helpless. A truly remarkable and admirable man.

I totally agree with you but I don't think that Europe has the will or the military capacity to provide effective support to Ukraine. Yes, the European leaders will gather round tomorrow and say supportive things but not much will happen. Actions speak louder than words. It's fair enough to criticise Trump, Vance etc but I don't think that Ukraine can count on Europe either. I was reading today that France, Italy, Spain, Portugal are stalling an EU proposal to provide money.

Supporthelittleguys · 01/03/2025 23:14

As a Canadian, The brits are not going to revoke the invite to trump from Westminster. They have to keep trump on side, they’re too smart to piss him off just to put on an impressive moral show.

I think they’ve played it extremely well so far and fed right into his ego.

They’ll be subtle, by welcoming and supporting Zelenskyy as they did. Whilst not outright vilifying trump, they are sending a clear message.

This would be the better approach. Trump is awful but there's no way to rescind the invitation without making an all out enemy of him. There will be other ways to play it and there's no date set for it yet. Meanwhile Zelensky can be deservedly received here as a statesman and friend.

I think that there are huge issues about European solidarity in many ways. Each country is facing a different set of issues.

On the other hand, an empowered Russia? Maybe a common threat will unite them. After all, the USA and UK made common cause with Soviet Russia against Nazi Germany. Is it in the interests of any European nation to empower Putin's Russia? Maybe Orban. But does he really want to become a Russian satellite and give up his status?

Militarily, yes, very tough. As I understand it the UK military capability has been built around supporting and integrating with the USA. And probably other NATO members.

NATO has been abruptly destroyed, in reality. And reality makes possible changes that were previously impossible. War (hot or cold) brings previously unimaginable developments, because previously unimaginable investment and necessity.
