Fancy dress isn't for fat people.

I’ve worried my friend a bit and want to know if I was unreasonable.

My friend has an anniversary coming up. She’s planned a party. We were having drinks and she said that the invites were going out soon and she’d picked a fantastic fancy dress theme (can’t what it is, too outing.)

All our other friends were excited - and then she saw my face. I made a joke about being grinchy about fancy dress, but that I was still very much looking forward to the party. She point blank asked me why I disliked fancy dress, and I’d had a few wines, and so I told her…

I’m fat. I’m 5’2” and was 16 stone. I’m now 13.5 stone and losing steadily but realistically I’ll be fat for a long time still. I’ve been fat for 15 years. My other friends are all slim (and about 5 inches taller!) It’s really easy when you’re a slender/standard size to go into a charity shop and get fun cheap things that fit the theme and which look great. As a size 18 -20 pickings are slim and usually dreadful. I spend a lot of time choosing nice going out clothes that don’t make me feel awful and that I feel confident in, but I’ll end up at a fancy dress party in something unflattering that makes me sad.

Buying ready made fancy dress is worse- nasty cheap material, usually slightly slutty.

At a 60s hen party a few years ago everyone was rocking fun micro mini dresses and knee boots they’d got in charity shops. They had nothing in my size so I was in some flares I’d had to order from Shien and a T-shirt I’d had to tie dye myself. The picture of us all just makes me feel terribly upset. I look like a tie dye whale. I did have a flattering wrap dress that I loved and made me happy but obviously couldn’t wear it. Dressing is just so much harder as a larger person.

Now, me being fat is a me problem. I’m fully aware of that, and I’m now finally managing to lose weight. This is my friend’s party and I’ll go regardless, and try not to feel like a self conscious lump. My friend is lovely and it’s not her fault I’m fat and that fancy dress makes me sad. But- other fat friends all feel the same. Fancy dress is a slim woman’s game.

My friend (5’10”, size 8) looks amazing in pretty much anything. She’s picked a theme that’s a bit risqué and will look sensational while I just can’t think of what I’ll do. I also work full time, have 3 junior aged children and a seriously unwell mother so no time to visit lots of shops/ make something.

As I said my friend is lovely and I feel sad that I’ve worried her. She asked her MIL, SIL and neighbour (all larger people) and apparently they all said the same as me- her MIL said she "dreaded" fancy dress. She’s now rethinking the theme or thinking of making it optional but I think that’ll be worse- people are lazy, there will only be a few people who bother dressing up and it’ll be a shame as it’s not what she wants.

I stand by my premise that fancy dress isn’t for fat people but was I unreasonable for saying something? She did ask….

(Ps I know I was wrong. How do I fix this?)

YANBU!! I'm a teacher and have to do fancy dress every year for world book day, I always dread it, my weight is up and down but emotionally a problem, I usually go as a witch (black gown) I'm going as a Nun this year (big ole black dress) soooo annoying!

I couldn't agree more OP. I was once invited to a 'Burlesque and Bowie' party. Obvs the idea was the laydeez dressed in sexy basques and the men could get away with a suit or a face painted lightning flash. I fully committed to my Goblin King Labyrinth costume.

I love this.

Agree OP

I have declined party invites before due ti fancy dress

These days, I only go to social things if i can freely choose my clothes

SomethingFun · 01/03/2025 18:38

Dance magic dance! I’d go as the Vicar of Dibley to a tarts and vicars party. I went as a Freudian slip to a drs and nurses party. Can’t be arsed with ‘sexy’ fancy dress. Wear your lovely clothes op and say you are commando if anyone asks 😁

The theme would be outing ??! Is it the theme of DPs hobby? Anyway there a a few outfits for those of higher BMI depending on the theme. The fat controller from Thomas the tank engine (industrial revolution themed? ), Obelix from Asterisk and Obelix if it's "history" themed ? You just need to be creative.

Do you really think an overweight woman who feels less confident due to her size would want to go to a fancy dress party as The Fat Controller whilst all her friends are in sexy/flattering costumes? What's wrong with you ?

dapsnotplimsolls · 01/03/2025 18:40

Now she knows it's an issue for some of her guests, hopefully she will abandon the idea completely. I was invited to a fancy dress party with a 'Disney' theme - borrowed a suitable coat and spent a few quid on a fancy dress kit - wig and a couple of other items. Did I look glamorous? No. Did I feel uncomfortable? No. Job done.

AlphaApple · 01/03/2025 18:41

I'm guessing "Chicago" as the theme.

Bullshit

Plenty of people DO enjoy Fancy dress

There was a mix of costumes and non-costumes, people went how they wanted to go

Do you enjoy trying to make the poster people like shite and ruining the memory of her party?

Speak English please.

Yanbu.

Is there a theme for this fancy dress party?

Read the OP, FFS!!!

Somehow it feels as if some great life advice has emerged from this thread. I like @RatedDoingMagic point

If a banana stuck to the wall with duct tape can be Great Art then the outfit you like wearing can be Fancy Dress.

Along with @Vitriolinsanity

go as the windmill.

which I agree has the makings of a saying that becomes part of MN lore.

ReggaetonLente · 01/03/2025 18:44

Yanbu at all. I hate fancy dress too but for a different reason.

I have 2 small kids, working full time, husband working away and no family nearby- going out child free for me requires meticulous planning and happens extremely rarely. Why on earth would I want to spend that
precious time dressed as an 80s rock star (as the last invitation I received decreed)? I wasn’t even alive in the 80s!!!

KateReddy · 01/03/2025 17:07

Yes, see the OP.

Well I've read it twice and I still can't see it. Only the bit where's the OP says she won't state it as it's too outing.

You could at least be helpful in your reply, even if it IS in the post (which it isn't that I can see!). Why choose to be snarky when you could be helpful?

justasking111 · 01/03/2025 18:45

I once went in black fishnet stockings red heels, heavy make up, think scarlet lips. Called myself temptation. The garb was a vicars outfit. 😁

niadainud · 01/03/2025 18:41

Read the OP, FFS!!!

I've now read it 4 times and I still can't find a theme. You're going to have to help me out here!

Mosaic123 · 01/03/2025 18:46

We had a hat/ headpiece party.

You were asked to wear a hat, wig or some kind of headpiece. It worked well.

No one seemed to mind. Most people wore something they had at home already.

JayJayEl · 01/03/2025 18:46

Hi @tiedyewhale !
I feel for you. I loathe the "sexy" route lots of women go down when it comes to fancy dress. My sisters always do "sexy" (and pull it off), and I used to struggle with self confidence when trying to match them, especially when looking at photos where I'm stood alongside them. I never looked or felt even remotely attractive, and it made me dread fancy dress.

So, I've perfected the art of funny fancy dress.
And homemade! I now don't feel awkward and uncomfortable in photos next to them, because the whole point of my take on the theme is to look ridiculous. Is your friend's theme something you could make funny and ridiculous? This strategy completely changed my outlook on fancy dress and now I love it. My wife and I have become particularly good at couples fancy dress. Wish I could share a couple of photos to show you what I mean, but they'd be far too outing.

YABU. People of every size can and should be able to express themselves. You have to work with your shape and not be afraid of it. I’ve always, always been a bigger girl. Look up plus size cosplayers and get some confidence in you.

There are always ways to do it, you don’t even have to go “all in” when it’s just a fancy dress party. You’re putting way too much into it, it’s meant to be fun. Stick with what you know and are comfortable with and angle it towards the theme in whatever creative way you want.

That’s all very well if you want to express yourself (by means of fancy dress) but if you don’t it’s just a pita.

I would probably google what’s a good costume for the larger lady.

MyLimeGuide · 01/03/2025 18:48

Jumpingthruhoops · 01/03/2025 17:26

The first thing you need to do is stop comparing yourself to other people - comparison is the thief of joy.

You need to be happy in YOUR own skin - whatever size it is. The important thing is that you go to your friends party and have fun - and I'm pretty sure there are ways to embrace the fancy dress theme.

If it's something 'showbizzy', for example, can't you go as a well known star/character from TV/film/musical who is of larger build? There are plenty of them. I think if you did some research you could put together a cool outfit that looks great and doesn't break the bank!

Dumbarse post. What's your insecurity? Would you like to dress up as a celebrity that emphasises this?? Ffs humans!!!!

Ooh it would have to be Stevie Nicks. Who wouldn't want to look like Stevie Nicks in the 80s for one evening.

bringthecactusin · 01/03/2025 18:50

Clearly having an off day!! 🤦🏻‍♀️

People could still state it rather just hollering "READ THE OP!"

Dontlletmedownbruce · 01/03/2025 18:50

I haven't been to a costume party in a long time but last time I bought a pretty white sundress in a large size in a charity shop and painted myself blue, twisted a pillow case around my head and I was a smurf. I never buy costumes

I very much doubt that post has ruined everyone's memories of that certain party!!! Lol lol lol

MayaPinion · 01/03/2025 18:54

Black trousers, black T shirt or appropriate other top, or black dress. Use hats, scarves, coats, makeup, or other accessories to bling it out. Don’t overthink it. Look good first, and accessorise to theme.

You don’t have to. I’m a retired teacher. I just said no.
