To ask you to show me your bathrooms?

I'm thinking of updating my bathroom but could so with some real life inspo rather than magazine images of bathrooms that are larger than my entire upstairs.

Would anyone oblige me by sharing some pictures of what they've had done recently?

And more importantly any pitfalls of current trends that you'd now advise against? My bathroom is now at least 15 years old so definitely behind the times.

If you are tiling floors, underfloor heating is a must - especially if bathroom doesn’t benefit from rooms around it. Ie our en-suite is over an undercroft.

I love our bathroom apart from
• the cheap plastic bath. Dc scratched it with bath toys and now it never looks clean. Also the bath panel doesn’t fit properly (this is due to our wonky floors rather than a fault with the bath though) so it bangs every time anyone gets in or out of the bath.
• the flooring. We got vinyl due to the wonky floors making tiling more difficult and the design itself is ok (although I’ve now decided it’s a bit dark) but dp fitted it himself and it just looks shit around the edges with a line of wonky silicone sealing it to the skirting board. And again the silicone never looks clean because the dust sticks to it and if you scrub it it starts flaking.
• the old Victorian skirting boards are themselves dust gatherers and have layers and layers of old paint on so aren’t smooth.

Following with interest as I’ve just bought somewhere that needs a new bathroom, but I’ve spent almost all the money on the house itself! I’d be interested to know what people think is the lowest price you could get away with these days for redoing a small basic bathroom, nothing fancy or high end unfortunately!

alcoholfreelife · 02/03/2025 09:55

This is our en-suite, we had it done just before Xmas and so far the black isn't proving a problem ( although we did go with chrome taps due to what we had heard)

@SomersetClimber I really like your bath where is it from?

We have a shower over our bath and it's got a larger part where we stand in the shower?
Does yours work with room?

SunshinDay · 02/03/2025 10:07

@Holidaisy that
is an incredible change, you must be thrilled!!

It was Johnstones feature wall gold.

You have to do a background coat of something like gold colours, orange or yellow. It’s quite thin paint so takes a good few coats. Does interesting things with reflections though.

It is beautiful. Not seen any decent gold paints before.

@Ilovelifeverymuch Do you find with the texture on the white tile that it's more difficult to clean?

@Holidaisy Our layout is very similar and we did the same with the bath placement when we moved in. Huge difference. Yours looks lovely.

Just catching up with all the pictures and tips. Thank you so much, lovely people. Some definite food for thought.

Thanks for the cost breakdown too @HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend - that's really helpful as no idea what things cost these days. Your plans look fab!

Thanks, nice of you to say. Perhaps it’s the lower res pics on this website, I was fairly happy with it but it is a bugger to get an absolutely perfect finish with.

Surface prep has to be spot on, any little lump or dip or bump will show up super clear as the metallic effect reflects the light differently. And it’s also very fussy with application- you really have to concentrate getting the perfect amount of paint per area with the roller, too little and it just streaks. And lastly got to resist the temptation to touch anything you’ve just painted as it’s super easy to drag the surface and then it clumps up and looks like a lumpy mess. It’s tricky to work with. That was 4 coats I think, the first 2 looked awful but then it started to come together.

Still got the loo and floor to go in, but really happy with ours.

@Talipesmum looks lovely! Can you share where you bought the vanity unit and storage cupboard. Love the fact they are wall mounted.

Ignore me! I have Google lensed it and it looks like Monzo .

ItsFineReally · 02/03/2025 11:54

@skippy67 Beautiful! More innovative lighting around these days too, by the looks of it.

This is ours, DH did all the tiling and installing so we only had to pay for materials (there was a lot of swearing while putting the fan tiles up though!).

Thank you! Yes, I really like those. It’s a small room and having them off the floor feels a bit more spacious, plus fewer corners for dust to gather (I am a bad housekeeper!)

Wall mounted sink with vanity: Monza Chestnut 600mm Wide Wall Mounted Vanity Unit | Available Now (victorianplumbing.co.uk)
Matching wall hung cupboard: Monza Chestnut Tall Wall Hung Storage Unit | Victorian Plumbing.co.uk

If you do order them, open them up and check cos the first vanity unit that arrived was bashed a bit on one side. But we called up when we spotted a few days later and they replaced with no quibbling.

I would also say that the drawers in the vanity unit are not nearly as deep and spacious as they look from the outside - the top one has a gap for the sink waste and in neither of them can you stand things upright - it’s all quite lie flat. I think this is fairly common for wall mounted vanities though - I saw a few the same. It’s great for keeping toothbrushes/ deodorant/ all the stuff that we would have had on the windowsill though. And there’s tons of room in the long cupboard.

Love the finish on them too - it looks great close up.

marmiteandcheeseoncrumpetspls · 02/03/2025 12:37

@Talipesmum thank you so much, all really useful. It's for my ensuite and I think standard to the floor units will close it in.

Thanks again, and enjoy your bathroom x

Does the recess not gather limescale and mold?
My brother has similar and that part is already discoloured.

I live in a hard water area and haven’t had an issue with limescale or mould in the recess. The only issue I had was slight discolouration from placing a shaving foam can there that started to rust on the bottom

2025willbemytime · 02/03/2025 14:00

I'm moving house to a bathroom where the shower is over the bath. Not what I would have chosen but we can't have it all. Can anyone recommend a good mat as there's no doubt I will slip please?

ItsFineReally · 02/03/2025 10:28

@Ilovelifeverymuch Do you find with the texture on the white tile that it's more difficult to clean?

No, we've had it installed for a year now and it's been easy to keep clean and it doesn't gather much dust. I think installing the tiles so the wavy pattern flows vertically help to avoid dust collecting along the waves compared to if we installed horizontally.
