To feel so disappointed I can't get in the pool

Very much a first world problem. It is however ruining our holiday a bit and I can't see a solution.

We came to Cyprus expecting the weather to still be a bit chilly, its Feb. Its absolutely baking lovely hot and sunny. Fantastic! But the pool is so cold it's basically unusable, no one has got in it. My husband has tried three times and had to get out straight away.

It's lovely getting all in the sun but part of the fun is cooling.off in the pool.

It sounds silly but it's putting a bit of a dampner on things as I can't really sit in the heat for long without it and I really love swimming pools on holiday.

We are in Paphos, it's lovely. Any tips??

If its baking hot so that you need a swim it must sub-zero in there...
wearing clothes isnt gonna help!
Might just have to confine yourself to sitting and dangling your legs in

Just to add - there's no way i could get in a cold pool either. Any higher than ankles anyway. I just can't do it.

The only time i've ever been satisfied with the temp of the sea was in Egypt in August 😂

The Caribbean around Cuba was very warm in July....
The Arabian Gulf at Kuwait was like a warm bath throughout the summer and autumn. Not really refreshing at all.

Thanks for the tips.

I'm sat here in the sun at the moment and I can assure you it is very hot.

And you expected it to be chilly.

So just enjoy the warm weather, forget about the pool. It's February, you can't have it all

Crouton19 · 01/03/2025 12:52

It was quite unexpectedly warm here in the UK yesterday and there were people swimming in the sea on the south coast when I went for a walk. You should definitely take the plunge if you've got the Mediterranean to dry off under!

Californianpoppy · 01/03/2025 12:52

I think some people are missing the point.
Yes, you can swim in the cold in Britain, or worse, in a leisure centre, but that's not what you want on holiday.

I want: to be very hot.
To slip into a pool that is initially cool, but then body temperature.
To swim or bob about in a sea that is comfortable to lounge in.

It's a holiday, not an endurance event.

DarkForces · 01/03/2025 12:56

I was shocked by how cold the pools were in Cyprus in October. Close to 30 degrees in the sunshine but they must have been chucking ice slabs in there. They were freezing! Share your pain @Pikola but don't let it spoil your holiday. Get out on a boat trip or to the nearest town and enjoy the break

Libertysparkle · 01/03/2025 12:57

We had this in cape Verde in March. It was boiling but the pool was heart attack cold. I was worried for the older guests. We did use it though for short periods as had yound kids. The kids pool was warmer.

veiledsentiments · 01/03/2025 12:58

Oh and prior to moving to Cyprus I lived in Abu Dhabi, where I grew up, and then worked there. Even as kids we wouldn’t go swimming in the pool in January and February as it was too cold.

FirmPearlNewt · 01/03/2025 12:58

Octavia64 · 01/03/2025 11:43

If you just want it to cool off then sit on the side and put your legs in.

Many places don't heat pools in Feb and I feel your pain!

It's march

itsgettingweird · 01/03/2025 13:01

There must be ships around that sell swimwear. A rash vest will help.

Pikola · 01/03/2025 11:47

I was surprised as I worked in the canaries and Balieric Islands for 4 years and the pools were very cold out of season, but usable.

This one just seems actually freezing cold water so much so that no one is using it even though lots of people are sunbathing in swimsuits.

Really? I lived in Tenerife for a decade and don't think I ever used an unheated outdoor pool in winter season.

But then again me and my friends were wearing jeans and a coat when tourists were in shorts and vest tops 😂😂

10° is not warm when your acclimatised!

Indeed. So you either have to pay extra to go to a place that's properly hot in February, or you pay extra to go to Cyprus in the summer months. There really isn't such a thing as perfect weather, perfect destination and perfect price. You have to pick two. The trade off for visiting Cyprus at a cheaper time is a chilly pool.

happydappy2 · 01/03/2025 13:11

best way to cool down is just spray yr body with some water-it will cool you as it evaporates & helps you tan

mugglewump · 01/03/2025 13:14

Either use it as an introduction to cold water swimming, or go in the sea.
No reason for a cold pool to ruin your holiday.

Pikola · 01/03/2025 13:15

The worst part is how torturous waves lap over the edge temptingly as you lay next to it, it's a beautiful big pool.

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions. I honestly have never encountered a pool so cold in the canaries over winter yet it feels hotter here!

We are Still making the most of the lovely place and weather.

I am happy to go in the sea! But assumed it would be the same! We are going to try the sea tomorrow

loveawineloveacrisp · 01/03/2025 13:17

If you get in and actually swim you'll warm up in no time. We were in the Canaries in January and the pool was cold but I still swam in it.

Pigcasso · 01/03/2025 13:17

Yeah I cannot get in cold water (coronary artery spasm) and the pools in Cyprus are not heated and will be cold now, for that reason we only go to Cyprus in June and September

which hotel are you at?

Phunkychicken · 01/03/2025 13:18

For the past two summers I’ve had skin cancer surgery so haven’t been able to swim in either sea or pools so I get how annoying it is to be so close yet unable to go in.

unless you want to go full Wim Hof!? Some people pay to go to cold pools !

Holdonforsummer · 01/03/2025 13:18

We went to Paphos in March a few years ago and found the same. Luckily, the last few days were a bit warmer but boy, that pool was chilly. We did some nice day trips in Paphos - we were paragliding and took a Jeep tour up into the mountains, it was beautiful. Have fun!

If it was me, I would go to a local cafe where the mama works and engage in conversations and ask her to give me some local recipees, take pictures of her with my kids and make a memory album of the true things in life I've seen there, not just sitting by a bleach stinking pool all day - but that is me

😂

Anotherparkingthread · 01/03/2025 13:28

Yabu I'm in Cyprus right now as well and it is warm but absolutely not wool weather. It's literally the first day of march.

Pop someheere with an indoor pool, I booked a place with one because I knew I'd want to swim and it's dead here, so I've got it basically to myself.

TrainGame · 01/03/2025 13:30

The thing to do is get really properly hot before attempting the cold pool. Is there a sauna on site. It’s the only way I can do cold plunge. I bake myself for 20 mins in the sauna. Then I can cope with cold for a little bit.

But honestly sounds not worth it.

I certainly wouldn’t jump in and swim up and down as a pp suggested. The cold water all at once can send some people into shock (including me) and a man died recently from a heart attack after jumping into an unheated David Lloyd pool here in the U.K. recently. Very bad advice.

MissyPants · 01/03/2025 13:30

They are all like it, I lived in Cyprus for a few years.
You need to go to Nissi beach at Aiya Napa if you have transport, it's beautiful.

ChompandaGrazia · 01/03/2025 13:31

deplorabelle · 01/03/2025 11:33

Perseverance is key. And wearing a tshirt helps. You'll have the pool to yourself once you've cracked it. I'm envious

I went to Dubrovnik in April a few years ago. There was a beautiful infinity pool in the hotel. It was only 18° outside but I was bloody well going in anyway. I had the whole thing to myself. A German couple came by but decided it was too cold for them!
