To feel so disappointed I can't get in the pool

Very much a first world problem. It is however ruining our holiday a bit and I can't see a solution.

We came to Cyprus expecting the weather to still be a bit chilly, its Feb. Its absolutely baking lovely hot and sunny. Fantastic! But the pool is so cold it's basically unusable, no one has got in it. My husband has tried three times and had to get out straight away.

It's lovely getting all in the sun but part of the fun is cooling.off in the pool.

It sounds silly but it's putting a bit of a dampner on things as I can't really sit in the heat for long without it and I really love swimming pools on holiday.

We are in Paphos, it's lovely. Any tips??

It's deliberate. To keep people out and keep their costs down.

Movinghouseatlast · 01/03/2025 12:15

Is there anywhere that sells lightweight 'shortie' wet suits? Or even those Sol Bari swim suits with long sleeves and knee length shorts.

I went to Paphos in February once and I agree with you that it feels odd being on a hot, sunny holiday but unable to swim because its so cold.

I was surprised as I worked in the canaries and Balieric Islands for 4 years and the pools were very cold out of season, but usable.

This one just seems actually freezing cold water so much so that no one is using it even though lots of people are sunbathing in swimsuits.

Is it concrete or shaded cause that will also lower the temperature

Can you look for a public pool/sea near by to take a dip

DetectiveSleuth · 01/03/2025 12:25

I sympathise 😢 We’re at the airport right now waiting for our flight to Benidorm and the weather is due to be shit most of the week! We’ve decided to make the best of it and use the indoor pool, go to comedy shows at night and watch the hotel entertainment whilst taking advantage of the all inclusive drinks.

It might be a first world problem but it’s still better than being at work 🤷‍♀️

bakedFishandChips · 01/03/2025 12:26

Go on cultural walks and explorations. Pools can be found anywhere, even in the UK - start using your imagination. Life is what you make of it

Darkclothes · 01/03/2025 12:27

I clicked assuming this was someone with a disability and unable to physically get into the pool! 😕

I'm surprised the pool is even open in Feb! If its too cold, just dangle your legs in from the side. If its too hot out of the pool, use an umbrella so you can sit in the shade!

bakedFishandChips · 01/03/2025 12:28

If it was me, I would go to a local cafe where the mama works and engage in conversations and ask her to give me some local recipees, take pictures of her with my kids and make a memory album of the true things in life I've seen there, not just sitting by a bleach stinking pool all day - but that is me

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 01/03/2025 12:29

We've just been away with a heated pool. True luxury in winter ... 30 degrees on last day.

bakedFishandChips · 01/03/2025 12:29

I would go down the cliffs by the sea, sit and have a picnic near the boats, gaze at the sea, take it all in - you guys have forgotten how to live

LuckySantangelo35 · 01/03/2025 12:33

It’s proper tight of places to not heat the pools, they’re tying to save money. It’s not on.

SwanOfThoseThings · 01/03/2025 12:34

Once you get properly in, you won't feel the cold. I swim in the sea in the UK so trust me 😁

@bakedFishandChips

patronising. You don’t even know OP

gingercat02 · 01/03/2025 12:36

My grandparents lived in Cyprus. Pools are always freezing in the winter unless they are heated. The sea will be warmer but not warm. Locals don't swim past October generally

Coldiron · 01/03/2025 12:37

Have you been to see the mosaics in Paphos? They are described as the finest in the eastern Mediterranean and when I went there was nobody there.

MrsTigerface · 01/03/2025 12:39

Lucky you to be in Paphos, one of my favourite places. I’ve cooled myself off by having a quick go under the one of the showers that you use when you get in or out of the pool before now. Are you anywhere near the harbour? The sea will be quite warm even at this time of year and you can swim where all the locals do. There are changing rooms, showers etc all free of charge, which you might already know of, but that’s where I’d head. Nice dip, then lunch and a drink looking at the boats, lovely.

Wish I was in Paphos now…

So you would annoy a random woman at work by asking her for recipes then make her stand there while you take pictures of her with your kids and then what lol you become lifelong friends and find yourself visiting every year to stay with her and you all become family lol that's how it goes in shit movies but in reality you will look like a weirdo

ginasevern · 01/03/2025 12:40

Is getting in the sea an option? It's probably warmer than the pool.

PoorLion · 01/03/2025 12:40

Paphos is fab! Lunch at the harbour, a bar called Muse is lovely at sunset but I’m not sure if it’s open still, there a modern shopping centre but I like the traditional shops behind the seafront. Tomb of the kings is worth it too

Avatartar · 01/03/2025 12:40

Sorry, we had this, try buying a shortie wetsuit or next time don’t book unless outdoor pool is heated

MaiAamWaliHun · 01/03/2025 12:43

This has happened to me in Malta and in Portugal! Pools blooming freezing!

tallhotpinkflamingo · 01/03/2025 12:43

Wibblywobblybobbly · 01/03/2025 11:45

I'm a bit bemused that this is a surprise to you. In my experience across Europe outdoor pools are unusably cold between October and May unless they're heated. If you want to go to Europe in February and use the pool you need to book somewhere with a heated pool and even then it's likely to be cold.

Any places near you where you can get a day pass to somewhere with a heated pool? Sometimes you get beach clubs that have them.

Went to Barcelona in late October with a cold pool and it was fine even though the shade was over the pool most of the day.

wishIwasonholiday10 · 01/03/2025 12:44

I think your expectations are unrealistic. It’s February so the sea and unheated pools will be too chilly for swimming pretty much everywhere in Europe (and Turkey) at this time. You need to pick somewhere with a heated pool next time or travel further away or do a sightseeing based holiday.

veiledsentiments · 01/03/2025 12:44

I live in Cyprus, in the Paphos district. At the beginning of the week the thermometre on the bedroom clock was reading 2°, so it’s not surprising the pool is cold. We have a pool which is in direct sunlight all day. I might think about getting in it mid-May. Until the nighttime temperature stays above 20°, the pool will not be warm.

It would be better to do a proper local cooking class, learn some authentic skills and contribute to the local economy instead of trying to hassle people for their proprietary recipes for free and turning them into a photo shoot for social media.

Shinyandnew1 · 01/03/2025 12:46

We had a pool like that one year-it was really deep and never seemed to get hot. I found that just dangling my feet in the edge was enough to cool me down.
