Do you have plenty of toiletries, cleaning and washing stuff in

Following this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/5283316-is-your-kitchen-full-of-food-all-the-time?page=5&reply=142484582

What are you like with your toiletries, cleaning and washing stuff? Have loads in or buy shower gel, washing up liquid and laundry stuff when down to about a 1/10th of a bottle left or 2 pods.

I have about 7 bottles of shampoo in as I have 6 bottles on the go as if I wash with the same shampoo wash after wash, my hair goes limp and loses shape. Even on holiday, I have two shampoos and alternate.

Remember about 6 years ago, my then workplace had a range review on anti-perspirants and I bought about 18-20 discontinued cans for 35p-70p each (under £10 for the lot) and they lasted me 2 years. Majority were the big cans
Cleaning and laundry stuff, I usually have 2-3 of bleach, WUP, laundry liquid.

I do a large housekeeping stock up at the beginning of January each year (and then again in June) so I have 5-6 months of everything

TeenToTwenties · 28/02/2025 06:49

I tend to have something on the go, then 1 or 2 spares, more if the item is small.

DustyLee123 · 28/02/2025 06:49

I just buy as I’m running out.

Thewholeplaceglitters · 28/02/2025 06:51

I just buy when we need more.

ButterCrackers · 28/02/2025 06:52

I just did a shop for a month’s worth of cleaning products, shampoo etc. it saves me time to get it all in one go. I have bars of soap in reserve.

FedUpandEatingChocolate · 28/02/2025 06:54

I like to have one spare of everything. So I'll have my washing up liquid and then another new bottle in the larder.

89redballoons · 28/02/2025 06:57

For cleaning supplies and washing up liquid, I tend to always have at least a spare bottle in, because we buy the next one when it looks like we'll be starting the current spare soon and we also stock up if anything we use is on offer.

For toiletries, I have loads of shower gels, soap, body lotion etc from gift sets I've received over the years. My 5 year old asked me recently why I never use them Blush

jellyfishperiwinkle · 28/02/2025 06:59

I buy things when one bottle is running out and only have one shampoo and one conditioner on the go at any one time. It would do my head in to have the clutter of lots of half empty bottles of the same thing.

When people buy me toiletries gifts I use them straight away or give them to charity.

lifeisafunnyoldgame · 28/02/2025 07:00

We have ridiculous amounts of stuff! 2 kitchen cupboards cleaning stuff, different types of dryer sheets, colour grabbers, glow white etc. Multiple glass cleaner, kitchen and bathroom cleaners, carpet spot stain things etc. I have 2 plastic boxes that I refill with soap powder, I do wait to be around half way into the second before I buy a new one. They hold a large 130 wash between them. I also have a full bottle of fairy as well as the open bottle and around 2 months left of dishwasher tabs.

The bottom drawer in the vanity unit has about 8 shower gels, and there must be a good 30 in the spare room! Way too many and we haven’t needed to buy for 12 months. Always have a spare pack of toothbrushes and toothpaste. I am trying to reduce the amount of things we have so I am making a conscious effort to only buy when we need to now.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 28/02/2025 07:03

I buy when what we use is on offer and do a bit of a stock up then because I don’t know when it’ll next be on offer. So I’ll often have two or three washing up liquids, for example, in reserve.

DappledThings · 28/02/2025 07:04

I only buy any of this stuff when it's about to run out. Can't be bothered finding storage space.

Devilsmommy · 28/02/2025 07:05

DustyLee123 · 28/02/2025 06:49

I just buy as I’m running out.

Same, I don't have the storage space for big amounts of the stuff

Cakeandcheeseforever · 28/02/2025 07:05

Cleaning stuff I have lots of niche products I don’t use often which is annoying really, things like oven cleaner, windowlene. Other than that I only buy when I’m close to running out, I don’t have space to store much.

So one bathroom spray, one
toilet cleaner, two kitchen sprays and two shower gels at the mo.

KittenPause · 28/02/2025 07:05

I have a terrible habit of stocking up when items are reduced

So I have loads of toiletries and cleaning products

I really need cut down

SoScarletItWas · 28/02/2025 07:14

I used to but I read something that said ‘You are stocking a kitchen, not a shop’ and it brought it home to me how much unnecessary clutter there was under the sinks!

My sister works on the theory that ‘how often do you use a tin of tomatoes versus walk past somewhere selling tins of tomatoes?’ You don’t need four tins taking up space 😆

So now I buy toiletries and cleaning products when I’m down to about a third of the bottle.

The only exception I have is my deodorant because it got discontinued and it’s the best one for not leaving marks on clothes, so I have 12 stashed in the bottom of the wardrobe. I also had three bottles of a foundation that got discontinued but I’ve since found a new one which, so far at least, seems a permanent fixture in the brand’s range…

DatingDinosaur · 28/02/2025 07:22

I used to have spares for spares of everything and then complain that I had no space in my cupboards! So used them all up and now only have 2 shower gels as I like to alternate. Everything else gets replaced when I have about a quarter of a bottle left.

If the products were in short supply and difficult to obtain then I'd probably stockpile and then complain I had no cupboard space Grin

I do get bored of the same smell after a while so tend to buy different when the time comes.

TheChosenTwo · 28/02/2025 07:26

I always have about 3 or 4 spare toothpastes and shower gel, but other than that there’s just what we need pretty much.
Have a spacious kitchen and storage in the utility but it’s not all filled with spares of things.
I don’t personally see the point, we have everything we need and I will reorder things that are likely to run out very soon in the weekly shop. My mum has back ups crammed into cupboard space making it impossible to get to anything past the front row without taking everything out or causing an avalanche - it’s annoying!

taxguru · 28/02/2025 07:29

I buy when things are on offer so always have spares in the house. I rotate between the big supermarkets and also online, so can see which one has the offers via their online shopping websites. Especially things like loo rolls, washing machine and dishwasher tablets/liquid, branded shower gels, deodorants, hairsprays, etc. All the brands I like are always on offer somewhere. I don’t buy when I can’t get an offer but that’s fine because I’ll have a couple of spares bought previously when they were. I do the same with packet/tinned foods. You have to play the supermarkets at their own game!

We’ve an integral garage attached to the kitchen so I put all the “stock” on a shelving unit in there which also makes it easy to see what I’ve got and what I need to be thinking of buying.

MaybeIamJealous · 28/02/2025 07:32

I have loads, especially of shower gel and handwash/soap. I was actually only thinking at the weekend about how I need not buy any more for ages and must use it up. It takes up a lot of space but every week I seem to add to the stash.

I think that this weekend I may do a stock take and try to use at least 75% of the stuff before I buy more.

Exactly that except my spare room
If I lived in America I would be one of those extreme coupon people

Penguinmouse · 28/02/2025 07:34

I have a subscription for shampoo and conditioner so it arrives when stocks are low but for washing tabs and dishwasher tabs, I tend to buy when there’s a good offer on as I know they’ll always get used.

I’m moving towards this. We don’t have loads of space and clutter steals time.

alwaysdeleteyourcookies · 28/02/2025 07:40

I hate clutter so buy when running out.

I’m not that obsessed to go down the extreme coupon route. It just suits me to rotate around the supermarkets and my home set up allows for easy access storage, so why not take advantage of their fake pricing? I’ve always been an organised person too, so it all just works for me and I never get stressed running out of something and having to make an expensive convenience store emergency purchase. When you’ve been buying the same things for years if not decades, you just get to know costs, speed of usage, etc without even thinking, it becomes automatic. I’d be organised and plan in advance even if everywhere was the same price but saving money is the icing on the cake.

faithspikebuffy · 28/02/2025 07:55

@taxguru exactly. I wouldn't and don't need to buy anything at the higher price because I already bought it when it was cheap
I do it with food too
Did have a big stock when my shampoo and conditioner got discontinued and went down to 20p a bottle from £12!
