To now hate my new bedroom

So we’ve just moved house and our room is very small. Low ceilings and two bay windows. With our wardrobes this is the only way our bed can go. It isn’t ideal but it’s what we’re working with. There’s a gap between the headboard and the window as the bay window isn’t wide enough for the bed to actually fit in. We’ve got curtains to put up. But I mean this is ok right? Maybe behind could be used for storage ?🤷🏻‍♀️ I also don’t believe in that feng shui stuff whatever it is. Sort of regretting the move now and wish I planned it a bit more. The bed is a small double so we’ve literally downsized as much as we can !
pictures are showing the beds position and the size of said gap. Ignore the mess, literally moved all the stuff in today!

Well you won’t have the cot there forever. Rearrange then.

theres literally no way for the bed to go, it doesn’t fit in the gap between the wardrobe and the door and we can’t move the wardrobes cos the ceilings too low everywhere else 🙄

can you put your wardrobe in another room as a temporary measure while you need the cot in there? And then longer term maybe build in wardrobes on the left hand side where the cot is so your bed could go on the right hand side?

Are the wardrobes fitted? Rip them out when you have the funds to redecorate.

Where was the bed when you viewed the house?

chocmalt · 26/02/2025 20:27

If you're fine with it, then it's fine. Eventually you could move the wardrobe out or replace it with something that fits the space better, but if you're able to safely get in and out of the bed and room, then it's okay.

OverTheRaincloud · 26/02/2025 20:30

I would just have one wardrobe and then smaller units with just drawers when the cot goes. Drawers are more useful anyway unless you have millions of dresses.

InfoSecInTheCity · 26/02/2025 20:30

Do you have a diagram with the dimensions for each wall and the ceiling height?

I'd be looking to put the bed with the headboard against the wall with the cot and then finding creative solutions for the wardrobes.

5128gap · 26/02/2025 20:30

I'd put floating shelves up the two sides inside the gap for plants, lamp, nice bits of storage and maybe a small blanket box on the floor. Otherwise that gap is going to be full of stuff. (Or it would be in my house at least!)

Breathmiller · 26/02/2025 20:31

Can you replace the wardrobes with something lower and fit them where the ceiling is lower? Like high sets of drawers maybe.

Then put the bed the other direction (head on the wall to the right where the wardrobe is) if it will fit lengthways.

What is on the other side of the photo? As in how much space where you were standing to take the photo. And where is the other window (If I've got that right)

It does seem a shame to block off the little area at the window because it will make the room feel bigger if you can see the space. But, if its not possible then I think it is fine to have it like you do. Just buy a nice box storage unit that fits in with a lid that you can access it but also have a top to put things on. Otherwise it may just end up a dumping ground thats hard to get in and clean. Or it would for me.

marmiteandcheeseoncrumpetspls · 26/02/2025 20:33

I see I've been beaten to it but I came to ask where the bed was when you viewed.

It looks very 'temporary'. I wouldn't be pleased with that set up at all OP.

Loveduppenguin · 26/02/2025 20:33

Does the cot need to be in with you? Baby looks old enough to be in their own room. Then you can put the bed where the cot is

Breathmiller · 26/02/2025 20:35

Also, I do understand how horrible it is when you move house and you don't like the layout or space. I did for the house I have been in for 13 years now. Lower ceilings than I was used to and just couldn't think how to manage the smaller spaces. It was also not easy when the kids were younger and it was a bit make do. But, I have stuck with it and in time figured out what works (and what doesn't) and I love it now. It can take a while though to settle in to a new house. And what I realised was that my old furniture just didn't work and I needed time to figure out what did work.
I hope you find your way to be more settled soon.

verycloakanddaggers · 26/02/2025 20:35

It's fine for now, in time you can get different wardrobes/hanging rails and then rearrange.

Don't rush to fix it, it doesn't matter so long as the house is warm, dry and safe.

Theycallmemama · 26/02/2025 20:50

I can’t reply to them all invidually I don’t know how but basically where I’m standing is where the door is, and the other window and it’s basically symmetrical to how it is in the picture. When we viewed the house it was empty so can’t even compare it! The cot has to stay in our room for now because he still wakes up lots of times a night and will wake his brother and his room is teeny tiny as it is. We obviously didn’t envision how small the room would be when we bought the house. Kind of rush purchase as our old house was no longer suitable. Even when the cot goes, we still don’t have room for anything. We could swing the bed round and put the bed along the wall where the cot is, but then we’d have no room for the other wardrobe. We need two as we don’t have a chest of drawers due to having no room at all it’s literally tight. It’s a cosy house but it’s so small and now I’m regretting it. The space behind the bed I was thinking can be used for them nice decor tree things or a nice lamp? To make it look better atleast 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think you should ask MNHQ to remove the photo with your child in. Report your own post and just say you'd like it taken down.

Theycallmemama · 26/02/2025 20:52

Where the other wall is (opposite the cot) is an open fire place! It’s a very old cottage style house

OP posts:
hby9628 · 26/02/2025 20:55

I think it's fine. Personally I would redecorate it with lighter paper and if funds allow replace with lighter coloured wardrobes as it looks quite dark atm. When the cot goes could you get a bank of wardrobes along that wall?
A thin console table behind your bed so you can put water/books/phones
It's not bad at all. I remember getting the dread the first day we were in our house but it's turned out fine. Don't panic!

ItisIbeserk · 26/02/2025 20:55

Working with what you have, I like the idea of floating shelves and storage underneath. I think you need to add some useful surfaces near the bed to make it feel like it’s what you intended all along - somewhere to put lamps and cuppas on.

InfoSecInTheCity · 26/02/2025 20:55

Unless you plan to use it, this would be an easy fix, just get it blocked off, making sure it's done properly to allow for ventilation. That would give you a clear wall to use for storage then your bed on the opposite wall where the cot is currently.

Changingplace · 26/02/2025 20:55

How many other rooms do you have? Can the wardrobes go in another room?

Eventually the cot will go, and your child will go into their own room? Then can’t the bed headboard go against that wall on the left and the wardrobes go elsewhere?

Sugargliderwombat · 26/02/2025 21:06

I love a cosy bedroom! I'd put a very slim console table there and have a lamp on it, I'd put fairy lights around the bay. Go for cosy! I would get rid of everything black though! Go for cream or white.

Sugargliderwombat · 26/02/2025 21:07

Oh also look into the big IKEA pax wardrobes that have mirror fronts and put them somewhere else in your house.

WickWood · 26/02/2025 21:08

It is very small, but I do like the higgedly piggedly layout and I bet the open fire is gorgeous! I don't think there's much you can do, unfortunately!

RosesAreNice · 26/02/2025 21:09

I think you could make this look quite nice by putting a high table behind the bed in the bay window. You could have a lamp and plants on it etc.

LIZS · 26/02/2025 21:10

You can't put both wardrobes on same wall and push bed over?
