To now hate my new bedroom

So we’ve just moved house and our room is very small. Low ceilings and two bay windows. With our wardrobes this is the only way our bed can go. It isn’t ideal but it’s what we’re working with. There’s a gap between the headboard and the window as the bay window isn’t wide enough for the bed to actually fit in. We’ve got curtains to put up. But I mean this is ok right? Maybe behind could be used for storage ?🤷🏻‍♀️ I also don’t believe in that feng shui stuff whatever it is. Sort of regretting the move now and wish I planned it a bit more. The bed is a small double so we’ve literally downsized as much as we can !
pictures are showing the beds position and the size of said gap. Ignore the mess, literally moved all the stuff in today!

I also think if you choose a nice colour for the back wall and paint the wardrobes the same colour to match that would mean they blend in and look quite good

Cantbelieveit888 · 26/02/2025 21:13

Bit of background context, what made you move? Did you see floor plan and room size before moving etc?

Loveduppenguin · 26/02/2025 21:20

I would have to start over with furniture in the room and start with placement of the bed and work from there.

5128gap · 26/02/2025 21:21

Long term I'd have the headboard against the wall the cot is on, so you lie in bed with the open fire on your right and window on your left. You need IKEA PAX with mirrored sliding doors on the opposite long wall. You could possibly even squeeze a shelf over the radiator with a little stool in front for a dressing table. Keep only in season clothes in your reduced wardrobe space with other stuff vacuum packed and stored.

WonderingWanda · 26/02/2025 21:27

I would put both wardrobes along the right hand wall then push the bed against the left hand wall. Then turn the cot the other way and put in front of the window....with some very good blackout curtains. It would give you a bit more space to move.

LionME · 26/02/2025 21:45

Is it me or you have some sloped ceiling?

BrieAndChilli · 26/02/2025 21:51

If the baby is going to be in with you for a while? Could you chick the wardrobes in his room and then rejig when he and the cot go? Might give you a better layout for now?

RawBloomers · 26/02/2025 21:51

I do think having the bed block off the window like that is not making the most of the room but you're a bit stuck while the cot is in there. So a table, level with the top of bedhead would give you a surface for lamps, books, phone charger, water, etc. and hide the "hole". If you put the table top on a hinge it would give you a hidden storage space for things you don't use much (but be careful of blocking the radiator). Floating shelves above would give you more storage for nice knick-nacks, but don't put them up if they are likely to get covered in all sorts because storage is at a premium - that would just make things dark and tatty looking.

Once your baby is sleeping through and can be moved into their own room I think you have some possibilities to make it much nicer. Replacing the wardrobes with something built in should give you just that little bit more room to be able to put the bed with the head where the cot currently is, facing the fireplace. If the fireplace is beautiful, then make that a feature. If not, then getting it properly blocked off and you'll have a wall to make something of. Then you could have a cosy window seat or a huge plant in the window.

BrieAndChilli · 26/02/2025 21:51

Do you have a floorplan? Might help us visualise the whole room better

RawBloomers · 26/02/2025 21:57

It’s a cosy house but it’s so small and now I’m regretting it.

About this in particular, OP, I just want to say that it is common to have regrets after buying a place. It usually settles down within a year or two. Try not to get hung up on that feeling and focus instead on what you can do to make the house work for you and the benefits of your current situation compared to to your old one.

Hankunamatata · 26/02/2025 22:01

We made best space by having built in wardrobes that went to the ceiling built specifically for the space. Including overhead storageabove bed. Probably why not on trend but you need storage if you are limited space

Theycallmemama · 26/02/2025 22:11

We had to move due to our old house being sold (we was renting privately and saving for a mortgage and we had little time to buy and find a home otherwise we’d be homeless) there’s literally no other way it can go so I think I’m going to have to get used to it. The furniture is actually all new, just been delivered today so can’t even change it, and the wallpaper has been hung today too. The question about sloped ceilings, yes they are which is the bane of my life at the moment. Would be easier if they wasn’t!

On the Ikea Pax topic, there are 'hacks' you can do to customise them to your space, if you have enough DIY skills. Things like this for sloped ceilings:

I'll add a couple of screenshots as images in case you don't have Facebook access, but the images take a bit to be approved so might not show on my post immediately.

Could you put the bed up against the wall where the cot is and the cot along the foot of the bed? It would open up the window area for more light.

Edited to add, congratulations 🎊 on your new home op.

Yes! Do you have the floorplan from the original listing you could share with us.
Probably a bit late now, but ottoman beds are great for storage.

Wantitalltogoaway · 27/02/2025 07:03

Loveduppenguin · 26/02/2025 20:33

Does the cot need to be in with you? Baby looks old enough to be in their own room. Then you can put the bed where the cot is

Agreed. Why is there a massive cot in there?

Would make the world of difference and you would all get more sleep.

I was thinking of a nice plain console table in the bay. You’d have to find the right shape/ size so it doesn’t look too full up but it would be good to make it look like an intentional use of space. Mainly for decorative objects, lamp, etc but it could double up as a bedside table overnight.

Also, could you adjust the bedroom door so that it opens outwards into the landing? Would that help you to find another space for the bed? It’s a bit strange to have outward doors but you’d get used to it quickly I think

PinkPinkPinkBlue · 27/02/2025 07:29

Bed where the cot is now, chest of drawers in the bay window and get rid of one wardrobe. You can always get pull out drawers/storage for under the bed to store bulky items like jumpers, jeans etc. Ikea sell wooden ones in wood effect, white and black finishes.

mylovelyboycat · 27/02/2025 08:08

I don't know if this helps you, but you can get ikea pax wardrobes with a depth of only 35cm (plus a couple of cms for the door). I have them in my tiny bedroom. I have got the, 35cm deep, 50cm wide pax wardrobes and put have got two 25cm wide mirror doors on each wardrobe.....they can open out into smaller spaces.

This might be more useful for you later on if you are looking at changing the furniture. It has taken me years to reach this conclusion!

SophiaBrown · 27/02/2025 08:16

Can the wardrobe be moved? Move the bed to the side of the wardrobe.

Violashifts · 27/02/2025 08:25

Can you put a wardrobe in childs room while cot is in yours?

Agree a floor plan with dimensions would be helpful.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 27/02/2025 08:33

The black furniture sucks the light and makes things seem smaller. Why can't you return the furniture if it doesn't fit/work? Honestly better to have a couple of temporary racks than stuff that just doesn't work. Please post the floorplan from the sales listing so we can have a proper go at suggesting changes.

What about the other child's bedroom? Would that work better for two adults?
