To not know how everyone has the money and time to have their nails done

Cost of living crisis - have you cut down on having nails done?
I was surprised on the engagement ring thread how many people had nails done. I’ve had to cut back on loads and I earn pretty well- nails are now a luxury
my small town has about 6 pop in salons in the town and they’re always full
aibu to not know how such a high proportion of people have nails done so regularly

It's all about priorities and some people might see it as vital and not have something else instead.

I do my own so it's cheap, not fancy art but just bog standard gel. No one would know the difference.

Cinno · 24/02/2025 21:32

Everyone?

TheClawDecides · 24/02/2025 21:33

Because they have more money and time than you?

Or they spend both of those things differently to you?

InMyMNEra · 24/02/2025 21:33

Many women prioritise their nails. Although I agree with you. There are several nail bars in our small town, and impossible to get an appointment

LittleRedRidingHoody · 24/02/2025 21:34

We'll presumably they have more disposable income, or different priorities than you?

DSis is on minimum wage with UC top ups. Single and in a studio flat, spends about £15 a week on food. Nails done at least once a month, it's her one 'treat' (no pubs, not much eating out, no coffees out, no car as walks 45m to/from work).

I'm on a six figure income and have never been to get my nails done in my life! Will happily drop more than the cost on a nice dinner/new dress but in my mind, it's not worth it.

LadyEstrellaDellaheugh · 24/02/2025 21:34

I always had my nails done, fingers and toes every 4 weeks £55, I stopped as wanted to save for other things. At the same time as I stopped 2 of my friends also stopped. We've all bought our own gel nail kits and uv lamps and just doing it ourselves now...

Doubledded123 · 24/02/2025 21:34

It's my only bi monthly payday treat to myself.
Haircuts twice a year. I work 2 jobs to pay for everything, single parent.
...
Probably many women are thd same.

MotionofTime · 24/02/2025 21:34

I have time and money but I see it as a waste of time and money (for me).

Different people have different priorities.

TippledPink · 24/02/2025 21:37

I just couldn't be bothered with it all! The other day I felt a bit conscious of the fact my nails are short and stubby and cuticles not seen to so I got gels done to see if it helped them grow. It cost me £30 and lasted two days before starting to wear and a week before chipping! I can't spend £30 a week on nail varnish! People really must prioritise this going by the manicured hands I see day to day but it seems a bit much for me.

Lashes in the other hand... I get every three weeks! My only extravagance!

HappyKatieA · 24/02/2025 21:37

I learned to do my own, I do SNS on them approx every two weeks. It takes a few hours, but works out about £3 a go.

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 24/02/2025 21:38

I feel better when I have a pedicure and manicure.

I go once a month or so and spend $100.
It relaxes me and makes me happy.

I imagine you spend money on different things than me.

For example I never drink so I save money that way.

arahiganay · 24/02/2025 21:38

I know a lot of people who don't feel "done" without having their nails done, I've never seen some of my colleagues without gel manicured nails they always look nice and neat. I'm just not one of those people - I'd like to be a bit more put together but just never get round to any of it!

Hemlocked · 24/02/2025 21:38

It's a phenomenon I may never understand. My nails seem to be strong and look fine 'naked' so maybe that's why I don't get it, but I dislike all the chemicals, and I would end up ruining them as soon as I got them because I'm not careful about stuff like that and I'm more of a practical tomboy type. I feel happy that it's one of the things I 'save on', like cutting my own hair.

Bluesclues1 · 24/02/2025 21:38

It costs me £30 and takes 45 mins every 3-4 weeks - it’s really not that much in terms of time or money for me personally. I prioritise it because it makes me feel good and I’m crap at doing my own nails.

NoSoupForU · 24/02/2025 21:39

It costs me £50 a month and I can spare an hour every fortnight to sit and have them done. I quite like it as its proper switch off time.

I get shellac on my nails and they don’t chip at all. They last for 3-4 weeks but will grow out.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 24/02/2025 21:40

For me it's one hour every three weeks.

Hardly excessive 🤷🏼‍♀️

Mum2jenny · 24/02/2025 21:40

Nails done professionally, only on very rare occasions (with others paying).
Complete waste of time and money imo. How difficult is it to paint your own nails?

tappitytaptap · 24/02/2025 21:40

I have a busy career and kids but like my nails done. It's half an hour every 2.5-3 weeks. Just priorities and how you choose to spend time. I get the same question about how I find time to exercise and it is the same answer 😂. Also it's only £23, which isn't much (to me, to be clear!)

LadyKenya · 24/02/2025 21:40

I had a manicure, and a french polish years ago, because I had a voucher for money off, or something. I have not bothered having my nails done since. It is like anything else, people prioritise different things. I am not forking out for my nails to be done regularly. I would rather spend my money on other things.

ThreeMagicNumber · 24/02/2025 21:40

Every four weeks I get overlay infills . It's only 25 pounds where I am and I give 30. I go Thursday after work as its late night or a Saturday morning after I drop my daughter at work, time isn't an issue but my children are between 12 and 20 now.

socks1107 · 24/02/2025 21:41

It costs me £35 every 3 weeks. I go to a gorgeous cabin in the grounds of a country house with horses literally at the window.
It's absolute heaven and is my treat to myself, and I can walk so I embrace the whole two hours as me time away from London/family life

I get shellac so I don’t have to be careful.

It’s just nails though, not a personality trait.

You can be practical and enjoy manicures.

I’m so jealous! That sounds like heaven. 💕

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 24/02/2025 21:44

I'm on the engagement ring thread and just looked at my post and thought how nice my nails looked.

I have taken to stretching my appointment and getting my nails done every 2 months which isn't ideal but is nore affordable and I can cope with the time effort. I've just had them cut very low to maintain a neater look for longer.
