To not know how everyone has the money and time to have their nails done

Cost of living crisis - have you cut down on having nails done?
I was surprised on the engagement ring thread how many people had nails done. I’ve had to cut back on loads and I earn pretty well- nails are now a luxury
my small town has about 6 pop in salons in the town and they’re always full
aibu to not know how such a high proportion of people have nails done so regularly

Once a month and it's my only treat / time to myself I get. I do find the time somehow although I have to beg for someone to take my kids 😂

£45 but it's my only wind-down. I don't really go out, my life revolves around doing things for others so I like the 1h peace and pamper and silence a month.

Don’t have your hair cut at all then?

Having nails done regularly is a relatively new thing. Well at least for those that weren’t loaded and very wealthy ladies of leisure.

having nails done regularly is a commercial marketing success. Make out that people who don’t have perfect nails are scruffy, ill groomed etc . Make out it’s normal, what EVERYONE is doing. Create a market. Social pressure. Social media led. And there’s a generation or two of women who fall for it. And are wasting money still doing it and seeing it as a need. It’s a want.

no different than paint companies telling you they “this years paint wall colour is elephants bum “ and you’re old fashioned to have elephants ear. Or that you need black metal shower frames (really? Ever tried keeping them clean in hard water area?). Or designer handbags by the dozen. It’s all just marketing to those that feel they have to keep up appearances to be fashionable.

What a load of patronising rubbish 🙄

Waffle19 · 24/02/2025 22:19

Yes I used to have mine done monthly but now only for very special occasions

It's a phenomenon I may never understand. My nails seem to be strong and look fine 'naked' so maybe that's why I don't get it, but I dislike all the chemicals, and I would end up ruining them as soon as I got them because I'm not careful about stuff like that and I'm more of a practical tomboy type. I feel happy that it's one of the things I 'save on', like cutting my own hair.

You sound just like me. I like nice clothes but am not bothered about nails or make up and DH cuts my hair.

I think I've had my nails done once in my life, for first wedding (to exH).

It costs me £35 every 3 weeks. I go to a gorgeous cabin in the grounds of a country house with horses literally at the window.
It's absolute heaven and is my treat to myself, and I can walk so I embrace the whole two hours as me time away from London/family life

Where is the cabin in the country with horses at the window, please? 💅 🐴

Bingbopboomboomboombopbam · 24/02/2025 22:21

@LittleRedRidingHoody £15/week on food?? I need to know what she eats 😩 my food bill feels neverending

Unpaidviewer · 24/02/2025 22:21

I could afford to but its a time issue for me. We live rurally so by the time I've travelled, parked and had the appointment it feels like half of my day is gone.

Take it you’ve got elephant bum paint on your walls then ?
🤷🏼‍♀️🤣🤣

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/02/2025 22:24

I have my nails done every 3w. It’s £30 so £10 a week

£500 a year

It’s about the only thing I do for myself so ……..

hby9628 · 24/02/2025 22:26

I love having my nails done but they grow out too quickly for my liking & I pick them off. I'd really need them done every 2 weeks which is a faff & I can't justify it.
Lashes however I do love. Once every 6 weeks and make a real difference.
I just keep my nails short & do them myself.

SassK · 24/02/2025 22:28

I have my nails done fortnightly - they grow quickly. I get them done because I like them looking all perfect 😄
I've gone to the same woman for years, she's lovely and I enjoy the chat and catch up.

FlowerUser · 24/02/2025 22:29

My nails are really weak and soft and prone to cracking. I also run them between my teeth. If I didn't have my nails done (gel powder, gel polish) every month they would look disgusting.

I can't do my own nails or I would buy the kit and do them myself.

Overthebow · 24/02/2025 22:30

Different people have different priorities. Personally I don’t get mine done but can’t see that £50 a month on nails is that much to spend really of they have the money. I spend more than that a month on the things I like doing.

Marshbird · 24/02/2025 22:18

This will likely sound nuts but once a year! My hair is very long so I actually don’t notice it growing. The style I get is not technical, I don’t ever colour to the root so I don’t get visible roots. The downside being that when I do have it done (usually prompted by an occasion like a wedding), it’s 4h affair, hence why I don’t do it often

ThatAgileLimeCat · 24/02/2025 22:31

I have a condition where I not only.pick and bite my nails but the skin around them too. Often until they bleed. The only thing that stops me is having my nails done. Took me over 40 years to realise.this , and a further ten to be able to afford to get them done regularly. Such a small thing but it's made a huge difference to my life and how I see myself.
I also spend a lot on my hair. No excuse for that one..pure vanity.

MajorCarolDanvers · 24/02/2025 22:32

MotionofTime · 24/02/2025 21:34

I have time and money but I see it as a waste of time and money (for me).

Different people have different priorities.

Same here.

never had my nails done - not my thing. Would rather spend my money and time on a thousand other things

measureofmydreams · 24/02/2025 22:35

I used to have mine done every 2-3 weeks. I now earn a lot more and just don't bother. I'm on the engagement ring thread too. I try to look after my naked nails, and sometimes I'll use a strengthening clear polish. In the summer I have my toe nails done and I let them breathe in the winter.

honeyfox · 24/02/2025 22:39

I've had mine done a good few times but it wrecks them (and they are normally strong) so I don't bother anymore.

LillyPJ · 24/02/2025 22:40

I've never had my nails done. Seems like a waste of time and money to me.

LePetitMaman · 24/02/2025 22:42

I used to get mine done every 2-3 weeks. Money less the issue, but when I took on some work, time was.

I bought a gel lamp, a ballet pink builder gel and a beautiful coral red. One topcoat. A primer. All in about £50. I default to the nude pink set but on occasion I have the red. I've been doing my own nails for about 2yrs now and they are salon quality.

I highly recommend it. They take about 2 hours so I plonk a murder program on in the evening and do them every other week so they look permanently fresh. For the first 2 or 3 times they peeled off and lifted, but you quickly get the knack and I am frequently asked where I get them done. It's so much easier than you think, I'm absolutely talentless at stuff like this, and even I can do a great set.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 24/02/2025 22:45

I agree with you @Beckywiththegoodnails It's a mystery to me that we are in a CoL crisis and people can afford regular manicures and takeaways as well as tattoos. I'm a boomer so pretty well off by today's standards but when I was young any of the above would have been an unaffordable luxury.

There is a cost of living crisis in the country yes, but this doesn't mean that everyone is struggling to make ends meet. As a household we are not 'rolling in it' but earn comfortably to enjoy our money as well as pay for life expenses and save a little. We don't all have to live to work. God forbid someone has a nice time, life is a kitchen sink drama!

ShinyClouds · 24/02/2025 22:52

£28 every five to six weeks, and lovely nails 🤷🏼‍♀️

RisingSunn · 24/02/2025 22:52

I do my nails every 3 weeks. It costs £30. People spend more on wine in that time.

Different priorities.
