Boycotttjng US Products and Services

CovenOfCheeses · 24/02/2025 18:45

Several of my friends have started a local campaign to boycott all US made goods and services. I have also started to do so because of the attitudes of the President to the rule of law and international co-operation. I have stopped buying from Amazon and have deleted my social media accounts and stopped using US made products. I feel that a country that is so antagonistic toward us should not be supported by our cash.

My eldest daughter is gay and has been saving up with her friend to go to the Dinah Shore weekend in the US. I said I would contribute some cash but now feel reticent to do so. She argues that she is going to support the people who are being attacked by Donald Trump, but I think that we should not give money to a country (even though it was only 50%) who twice voted for a menace to international order and the rule of law. I feel that during apartheid, it was only due to the economic boycotts that the system ended. It hurt the people who were in the country who did not agree to the system, but the economic impact forced the system to change. I think that by making a stand and making the people aware of how their president in impacting the world. Am I being unreasonable in withholding cash for her trip?

Half-naked woman on CBBC Operation Ouch! AIBU to feel it’s inappropriate to have “Dynamite”, who is a skimpily-dressed gladiator on a kids’ show? She appeared on a segment of the first episode of the new series flirting with the handsome twin Black doctors, Raph and Dan. It just seemed sexualised to me.

Good post, really gets to the heart of the matter.

(I think you meant to start a new thread).

For me it is not about being perfect but doing what I can to not give my money to these billionaires and companies. Perhaps it will make no real difference but it is also a wake up call. Why give my money to buy a coffee or a book from companies that treat their British staff like rubbish and do their best to pay as little tax as possible when instead I can give it to a local cafe or bookshop that will pay their taxes and treat their staff better?

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/02/2025 21:00

After Trump and Vance's disgusting display this evening I'm expecting more people to start boycotting.

It's a pity you and your friends don't have better things to do than organise a boycott of US goods. I think it's hilarious that you have such a high opinion of yourselves up on the moral high ground. Nobody cares and you will make not a jot of difference.
President Trump was elected by the American population to do exactly what he is doing and I think its great.

Can you explain your reasoning please.

If you're so firm in your beliefs, why do you care what we say? Boycott if it makes you feel better 🤷‍♀️

We will

Mark Zuckerberg was quite open in court and on Joe Rogan recently about how the Biden Admin had been pulling the social media strings for years. On the scale that changed election outcomes. Nobody flounced over that.

And I'd like to ask again, who is it you guys are trying to hurt with this? Half the people that work for these organisations won't have voted for Trump so are you trying to hurt the Trump voters or the non Trump voters?

sleepwouldbenice · 01/03/2025 10:14

Of course I feel for the non Trump voters. I also recognise that Biden failed in many ways and many only voted for Trump as they are desperate for their lives to change and believed he would do so

But it's the second time he's been voted in. After everything from denying the previous election to the court convictions. And he was clear what he was going to do on the world stage, although the ways he is doing it over Ukraine and Gaza are mind blowing

So this time I am choosing to ignore any internal domestic issues the US faces and yes I am boycotting from holidays to purchasing. They voted him in they can have the consequences.

They'll be fine. Sure isn't President Trump going to MAGA for them.

Why you support a convicted rapist and insurrectionist who is trying to destroy democracy in both his own country and internationally and supports dictators at the UN? Why you want to support this regime?

When did China last threaten to invade a European country? Or side with a dictator that killed and is still killing hundreds of thousands on European soil? Or enact a trade war with us? Or even try and influence politics and promote far right parties and an agenda in Europe? Or influence politics and castigate our leaders for being woke?

You're ok with over a million Uyghurs Muslims in concentration camps in China then or is it just white Europeans you're concerned about?

Maybe you should read your own posts. You're the one that seems to think that whatever China is up to is insignificant compared to the United States.

Maybe you're just ignorant.

Or maybe this thread is about boycotting the US based on what is more relevant to British & European people at this point.

Attacking the OP for not embracing every cause is whataboutery.

I hope you are perfect in every way in your apparently so "moral" life.

So clearly "ethical and morally superior" that you are attacking people taking a stand against US businesses hoping to make small difference.

JHound · 01/03/2025 20:31

This is a tough one.

I have no issue with people choosing to shop in line with their beliefs and moral values and understand people choosing to boycott the USA.

In this instance you made a promise and now she has no chance to save. I would keep to my promise in this instance.

I am really proud of my daughter. I got a text from her and she said she can postpone Dinah Shore for 4 years and she is planning on going to Velvet Ibiza instead. I am really glad that she has made the right choice on her own without me even mentioning that I was reticent to fund her trip.

If people did not make a stand, women would not have the vote, slavery would not be abolished, children would still be working and there would still be massive injustices in the world. We still have a long way to go and only by making a stand can we attempt to rectify injustices.

The OP's daughter chose to go to Ibiza instead.

Jc2001 · 01/03/2025 20:49

The OP made the apologist statement about China, which is what I commented on. I never drew that comparison. The OP did.

Biden “pulling social media strings”.
