BLEACH in a fridge??

Bought a second hand fridge yesterday off marketplace, just moved home and couldn't afford one brand new, came delivered all was well, I opened the fridge and my nose burned from the chlorine smell, I asked if they'd used bleach in it and they said " we have to use something to stop it from smelling "

Fair enough this is absolutely fine, but how on earth do I get rid of the smell of bleach, I understand I have to clean it but how many rinses would one have to do with dettol and hot water to ensure there is 0 residue left behind.

I wouldn't usually mind but this fridge has a water dispenser, so the use of bleach in the fridge has got me a little wound

Aibu to think they could've possible not used bleach on the bloody fridge, surely there would've been another alternative, with the way it smells too, it isn't even diluted bleach, just as though they've poured from a thick bleach bottle right on it.

AND how do I now remove it

😂 just seen this. Everyone needs a Colin. Well everyone with a fridge to clean.

Yes but we don't know if we can or can't hire him to do it or not.

What's wrong with bleach?! I always clean with bleach. How else do you get tea stains etc out of cups or mould off tiles.
Feeling bad now for a) being old fashioned and b) killing the world!

Washing powder gets rid of tea stains, or a mixture of bicarbonate of soda, vinegar, washing up liquid and boiling water also works really well. Vinegar also works on mould.

What the hell are people doing to and in their fridges that makes them think they need bleach to clean them? Are you storing shit in them? What's going on??

If I have a package of raw chicken leak in my fridge I clean it with bleach.

Different standards.

Ooh burn!

If I have a package of raw chicken leak in my fridge I clean it with bleach.

That’s ludicrous.

That’s ludicrous.

Enjoy your salmonella.

WelshPool · 26/02/2025 22:39

I clean our work fridge with bleach spray. Can confirm as if 4pm 15 burly welders were still alive and kicking.

Enjoy your salmonella.

Antibac would be more than enough. Hot water and soap would do it.

LittleBearPad · 26/02/2025 20:35

That’s ludicrous.

Why on earth would that be ludicrous?

LittleBearPad · 27/02/2025 08:11

ThejoyofNC · 27/02/2025 08:08

Why on earth would that be ludicrous?

Because using bleach left right and centre is unnecessary and bad for the environment.

It's normal, even expected in my culture. We keep our homes spotless and clean daily.

Nice passive aggressive dig at those from other cultures who are obviously dirty cows for not bleaching everything in sight!

Talkabtit101 · 27/02/2025 09:35

Ladies, I didn't expect this to be a battle of bleach users vs none bleach users.

Personally I wouldn't use bleach in a fridge, if others do, absolutely fine!!

We all have different ways of doing things, even cleaning the fridge.
However because it isn't to my personal liking, I just wanted to know how to remove the smell, well, I couldn't. I cleaned, and it is still there, i dont know if it will eventually go, but I have a full shop in there now, and I intend to eat every bit of it, bleach smell or not. I've cleaned it with washing up liquid and hot water, if the smells still there it's still there.

However we're all adults and shouldn't be bashing one another in regards to how we clean fridges, it's absolutely insane. My friend did her washing up in bleach over coronavirus, I'm sure we'll all survive if a bit of bleach is left in a fridge after being wiped down - and as someone with anxiety, this was my main concern because of all DDs fridge snacks.

Just to add for PP worried about leaking meat packaging. I keep a large unlidded Lock & Lock plastic box on the bottom shelf of my fridge, and use it for holding packages of raw meat. It's easy to take out and wash, by hand or dishwasher. Hot soapy water, never bleach. Same for the rest of the fridge.

I would never put meat directly on a shelf. Meat should always be stored on the bottom shelf, in case of drips on food lower down.

Wait till they hear I put bleach in my washing up bowl..

Me too!

LillyPJ · 08/07/2025 17:11

I knew someone who used bleach in the fridge. Every cup of tea tasted of bleach - revolting. Bleach is not necessary or desirable in the fridge.

Orang3Strip3 · 08/07/2025 17:18

Never ever use bleach, don’t even own any. Always soap and water in our fridge. Why would you use anything else? Everything in fridges
are contained in a wrapper or jar.

StrawberryPi · 24/02/2025 06:32

Don't add dettol! More chemicals is not the answer. As PP says just wipe down a few times with water and prop the door open to air/dry.

Water is a chemical.

StrawberryPi · 08/07/2025 17:25

BoredZelda · 08/07/2025 17:19

Water is a chemical.

True, but I am sure you can tell I used that term in the colloquial sense. I could rephrase as "adding additional disinfectants, detergents or other cleaning products is not the answer". Fortunately I think most people who are not being facetious will have understood that that is what I meant.
