BLEACH in a fridge??

Talkabtit101 · 24/02/2025 04:39

Bought a second hand fridge yesterday off marketplace, just moved home and couldn't afford one brand new, came delivered all was well, I opened the fridge and my nose burned from the chlorine smell, I asked if they'd used bleach in it and they said " we have to use something to stop it from smelling "

Fair enough this is absolutely fine, but how on earth do I get rid of the smell of bleach, I understand I have to clean it but how many rinses would one have to do with dettol and hot water to ensure there is 0 residue left behind.

I wouldn't usually mind but this fridge has a water dispenser, so the use of bleach in the fridge has got me a little wound

Aibu to think they could've possible not used bleach on the bloody fridge, surely there would've been another alternative, with the way it smells too, it isn't even diluted bleach, just as though they've poured from a thick bleach bottle right on it.

AND how do I now remove it

Are you talking about actual Dettol liquid or kitchen sprays made under the brand name Dettol? Dettol liquid actually says it shouldn't be used around food but Dettol brand kitchen sprays are obviously ok for cleaning surfaces etc.

tesco version

But do you mean disinfectant in a bottle for diluting or the entirely different liquid sold by Dettol (or Tesco) as a surface cleaner that comes in a spray bottle. One is ok around food, the other isn't.

theboffinsarecoming · 24/02/2025 17:57

Leave the fridge door open for a few hours. Chlorine is a gas so it will dispel all by itself if given the chance.

surface cleaner, not disinfectant - disinfectant would be ridiculous
pretty sure i know what i am doing, not sure why i am justifying myself

Baby bottle steriliser is by far the best.

But... this is bleach. You're going to clean bleach with bleach?

I was curious because I think lots of people thought you were talking about actual Dettol and arguing with you for saying that it's odourless, which it obviously isn't. No need for you to justify yourself - I didn't ask you to. I asked a question which you've answered. Thank you.

Just googled this

Who is Colin and would he come and clean my fridge please?

Edited - photo didn't copy over, but it's upthread

The smell of bleach wears off very quickly and is much easier to deal with than a fridge full of mould!

LillyPJ · 24/02/2025 22:37

Leave it open for a day or two. Rinse it first with plain water - DON'T use Dettol or it will just smell of that instead of bleach!

I clean almost everything with bleach 😂 use it daily

Just why? Don't you care about your lungs, the environment? A little bit now and then but every day and thinking it's really funny....

Then you're over doing it and killing a lot of harmless bacteria which are important for a healthy immune system. I wouldn't want my house to smell of bleach, plus it's really harsh on lots of surfaces, damages clothes and yellows plastics not to mention poisonous to water courses.

It's normal, even expected in my culture. We keep our homes spotless and clean daily.

You can keep your house clean without bleaching everything to buggery.

You didn’t specify though, so most people assumed Dettol disinfectant.

Hemiola · 25/02/2025 08:14

What's wrong with bleach?! I always clean with bleach. How else do you get tea stains etc out of cups or mould off tiles.
Feeling bad now for a) being old fashioned and b) killing the world!

Stickytreacle · 25/02/2025 08:30

I'm old fashioned too and regularly use bleach, my elderly mother uses it for removing tea stains from cups.

I was told years ago by a microbiologist that diluted bleach is the best thing for cleaning kitchen worksurfaces. No lung diseases here.

Totally agree 👍

What the hell are people doing to and in their fridges that makes them think they need bleach to clean them? Are you storing shit in them? What's going on??

Exactly my thoughts. I'm the wrong side of 50, never cleaned my fridge with any chemical, just with a bit of washing up liquid when required. Still alive.
