To ask for advice first a night flight?

123678user · 22/02/2025 21:48

I'm off on my first long haul flight soon, and was chatting to friends about it today and they said they always changed into pyjamas to sleep in similar circumstances.

I can't be arsed to be honest, was just going to bed down in my clothes.

Will I be the only one sleeping in my day clothes? Don't want to be a radical. 😬

Also any advice greatly appreciated. I'm 56 and a bit of a troubled sleeper in the best circumstances.

Changing into pyjamas is odd. I haven’t ever seen anyone do that.

Grenadescganades · 22/02/2025 21:51

Done many night flights - never changed into pj’s!!! Would be sooooooo weird

Only people I’ve seen do it are kids.. very cute in their onesies - but not for me!!!

just wear comfy clothes !

Titasaducksarse · 22/02/2025 21:52

Unless you're in a class with a lie flat bed most people are still in normal clothes. I have seen people change into comfy bottoms but never full on pjs in economy.

fashionqueen0123 · 22/02/2025 21:53

I’ve never seen anyone do that. Just wear comfy stuff to start with!

Wakeywake · 22/02/2025 21:53

Comfortable loose clothing, eg tracksuit bottoms and t-shirt sort of thing. Some people do turn up to the plane in pyjamas, but I find that really strange.

MumChp · 22/02/2025 21:53

Never seen people change. Just wear comfy clothes.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 22/02/2025 21:54

I’ve never seen people change into pjs! I don’t even know where you could get changed as the loos are very small and clearly you can’t just change in the aisle.
I just wear comfy clothes and have something warm as I find some flights get very chilly.

Honeyroar · 22/02/2025 21:55

I was cabin crew for over 20 years and can’t remember anyone over 8 yrs old changing into pjs in economy or business. Don’t worry about it!

Take ear plugs, have a bottle of water with you and perhaps a non-noisy snack. My top tip is a neck pillow, but wear it back to front - it stops your head nodding and waking you up. It’s also cosy.

Longhotsummers · 22/02/2025 21:55

Stretchy comfy clothes, eye muff, ear plugs are all you need really. I also take a pair of cheap slip on slippers and warm socks as my feet get cold.

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/02/2025 21:55

never changed into pyjamas but have taken a clean top to put on in the morning

the only people changing into pyjamas will be the folks in first class who get pyjamas provided

do take comfy clothing though, I’d take joggers and an oversized hoody

Hitchinkitchen · 22/02/2025 21:58

I’ve not done many night flights but I did one last September from New York. I never saw anyone in jimjams and wondering how someone would get the opportunity to change into them. The most I do is remove my shoes but I don’t have slip slips in my hand luggage.

LIZS · 22/02/2025 22:00

Just comfy day clothes

Defender90 · 22/02/2025 22:00

In business I've seen a few folk do it but not the norm, you used to be given PJs in BA first class (I only flew that once, air miles were a wedding gift) I still have the socks very comfy.

That said I really struggle to sleep on the plane anyway.

I stay in my comfy carefully chosen clothes.

Cazziebo · 22/02/2025 22:00

Pretty normal to change into PJs in business class. Some airlines provide them for long haul.

I don't change into PJs but usually change clothes just before landing so I can keep the PJs and give as presents

fatgirlswims · 22/02/2025 22:01

No, it's weird. I even find brushing teeth and washing face in the toilet a bit gross.

I wear extremely stretchy loose trousers with a loosed cuffed ankle (so it doesn't drape on the toilet floor. A t shirt jumper or cardigan and a blanket scarf. crocs are good and some old socks that I leave on the plane.

I take miceller wipe and antibac wipes and wipe hands and tray and controls or screen and the do face with miceller one and stack on a rich face cream and lip balm. Hair brush. If I need to freshen up the baggage claim toilets are usually passable.

Take a small pouch to keep essentials (AirPods, brush drink etc) to hand and stash your bag in the overhead locker.

I dunno about neck pillow back to front but please remember to pick it up when you leave the plane. I left my brand new neck pillow behind because it was the same colour as the seat. 🤣

I travelled first a couple of times on 14hr night flights and everyone changed into airline issued pjs, so I did too albeit on top of my vest. I had intended to wear joggers, vest and loose long sleeve t-shirt and flight socks. Did feel a bit awkward walking back from the airplane loo to my lie-flat seat though! I definitely think I slept better for it though.

I didn't bother on my other long standard cabin class haul flights, just took a change of clothes for changing into at the arrivals for a refresh.

Always brushed my teeth and washed & moisturised my face though on every night flight, as best I could, and wiped the sink after! And took my own eye mask and ear plugs.

Bellaboot · 22/02/2025 22:06

Common in First to change, not that common in business and unheard of in economy.

CandidGreenSquid · 22/02/2025 22:13

No, you’ll be fine. Some airlines provide pyjamas in First Class but even in Business Class people tend to just sleep in whatever they’re wearing. I always wear loungewear so I’m comfy but don’t have to get changed before going to sleep. More time for drinking champagne and watching films!

Movinghouseatlast · 22/02/2025 22:18

I saw a whole family in silk pyjamas only last week! It just looked very odd, especially walking through Heathrow at 8am.

I wear wide leg trousers with thermals underneath in winter, or a long dress in summer.

Practicepracticepracticeagain · 22/02/2025 22:20

Absolutely change for a night flight if in business or first. A lot of airlines used to give pjs but now most don’t. But most people still bring them. You literally get into your pjs and go to bed. I never bother in economy though. No bed so no point. Comfy clothes are fine. And honestly? Whatever cabin you a travelling in, no one gives a shit.

You're my travel twin!

MarioLink · 22/02/2025 22:44

PJs would be odd. I would wear comfy day clothes like joggers.

friendlycat · 22/02/2025 22:52

Only in first class with a kind of bed. Economy no way.

PeloMom · 22/02/2025 22:53

If you fly business or first- yes it’s a thing. But economy or premium economy- haven’t seen that.
