To ask for advice first a night flight?

I'm off on my first long haul flight soon, and was chatting to friends about it today and they said they always changed into pyjamas to sleep in similar circumstances.

I can't be arsed to be honest, was just going to bed down in my clothes.

Will I be the only one sleeping in my day clothes? Don't want to be a radical. 😬

Also any advice greatly appreciated. I'm 56 and a bit of a troubled sleeper in the best circumstances.

I was cabin crew for over 20 years and can’t remember anyone over 8 yrs old changing into pjs in economy or business. Don’t worry about it!

Take ear plugs, have a bottle of water with you and perhaps a non-noisy snack. My top tip is a neck pillow, but wear it back to front - it stops your head nodding and waking you up. It’s also cosy.

Every time I've flown long haul overnight in business I've put on the pj's that the airline has provided. This is along with pretty much everybody else in the cabin.

I'm currently in Australia and had 2 night flights to get here. NOBODY changed into pyjamas. Ok maybe they do in first class where Singapore airlines apparently have pull down beds in their suites, but I'm not in that league.

Even when I fly long haul First Class I don’t change into PJs. Probably 50% of the First cabin change, maybe 15-20% of Business and I’ve hardly seen anyone change in Economy. The PJs provided these days are not the best quality anyway (usually polyester).

I travel in something comfy but smartish so usually along the lines of Pleats Please loose wide leg trousers with a T-shirt (and silk blouse layered over the top) or a loose jersey dress (with leggings if I’m starting/ending somewhere cold). I always take my favourite pashmina (cashmere on one side, silk on the other side, so works well for both hot or cold flights) plus slippers (for shuffling to the toilet and back) and a small down pillow with a silk cover. Add a big silk eye mask (like the Drowsy ones which also cover your ears) plus hand cream, facial mist, lip balm etc and I have all I need. If I have a connection, I’ll usually try and grab a shower in the lounge (especially when doing the long Australia flights) and change my knickers and T-shirt then, plus clean my teeth etc. I do minimal freshening up in the plane toilets as they’re so cramped and usually pretty rank.

Edit: I also avoid wearing an underwired bra as the underwire can get a bit uncomfortable on really long flights. A soft bra is more comfy - and doesn’t set off the security scanners either.

Nobody outside of toddlers and this in first class who get the free snazzy pyjamas ever wear pyjamas! (That I've ever seen) comfy loose clothes with layer is the standard.

Yes if flying Qatar business they offer PJ’s and I always change if my plan is get some proper sleep in and ignore all the meals

For economy I tend to wear something comfy, make sure I bring eye mask, water bottle, flight compression socks, neck rest, ear plugs and then a fresh pair of pants and under-top to switch at the end of the flight to feel a bit more refreshed

I've flown business class a few times and never been given pyjamas.

I've sometimes changed tops....

I find it weird no one has ever seen it - I have been given PJs in business class and I’ve seen people change into their own but no I wouldn’t bother. I just wear clothes so comfy they could be PJs - elasticated waistband trousers, sports bra, soft t shirt and cardigan easy to whip on and off.

I say wear present tense, haven’t flown long haul in a few years due to kids rudely using up all my disposable income and energy.

  1. Avoid Coffee, tea etc. (and in my case chocolate)
  2. Enjoy meal ( in my case a G&T, and mini red wine)
  3. Noise Cancelling head or ear phones (in my case Apple airbuds Pro 2)
  4. Neck Pillow
  5. Eye masks

My only other tips for flying are...

  1. Bring a wide necked insulated water bottle and fill it air side (ask for pint of ice from the bar)
  2. Slip on shoes for security and flight
  3. Non ferrous waist belt, so you don't have to take it off for security
  4. Plastic bag for rubbish
  5. small pack of wet wipes, to wipe table and arm rests down etc.
  6. Get a window seat, at the back of the plane, slightly more space and empty seats tend to be a the back (if you're luck)

Got given PJs when I flew business class with Qantas a couple of years back. I didn’t change into them but did keep them and wear them at home regularly, very comfy.
