Romanian dog rescue

Preciousmemory · 22/02/2025 17:30

I am in an awful situation that I can find no solution to. Please if any one could give me some advice.
i have rescued a Romanian dog which has turned out so badly.
He arrived 10 days ago and has serious problems I am not able to deal with so am asking if anyone can offer me advice.
The rescue have a policy that I must give him back to be rehomed but are not able to find anyone although it is a short time they are describing him on the advert as a dog that loves humans and children and dogs. A huge part of this is not right I have not tested him with a child but as for people he definitely does not like them , only me.
He attacks my husband in the morning, in the evening when he returns home from work and then randomly at any other time. The attacks are getting progressively worse. But yesterday he met my 80 year old tiny dad for the first time which I had also for the first time put a muzzle on him after 7 days of training with it.
The attack was so ferocious on my dad that he was foaming at the mouth leaping as high as his shoulders to grab him but because he was muzzled there was no damage. my dad immediately left. I despair to think what may have happened otherwise. My daughter turned up shortly after the same thing happened. I was thinking he maybe afraid of men but it seems not.
I have constantly tried to work with the Romanian Rescue which could take months for them to find a suitable home, the only option I have from them is to stick this traumatised dog into a kennel which will cause further damage to him, but I am not able to keep him in my home with this level of aggression.
Dog rescues are full up. I have contacted a few that specifically deal with dog aggression. I do not see how this poor dog can just be homed in a normal family environment as this will happen again. He is a large growing powerful dog that could cause serious damage to a person.
Thank you for reading , this is such an anxious problem that I see no solution to.
I am grateful for any advice possible .

I do feel I do need to share what has happened to stop it happening to others because this has been absolute hell. With emotions and what will end up happening. Stupidly I have learnt so much after the event that I should have found out before

That’s good to do….people who take on rescue dogs from abroad do really love dogs and want to give their dogs a good ,loving home and I think they are being taken advantage of .

£490 adoption fee and donation for Neutering £100 vet test £120 in the beginning I offered to pay the next adoption fee if the right person came along but that was before I realised the extent of the aggression and as from last night had decided he should not be put into adoption or foster without being properly assessed

Don't spend more money on them.

you have already spend £710 in vain.
I would demand my money back plus the vet bill for euthanasia. They have acted extremely irresponsibly in their description of the dog and by not retrieving it asap.

Oh my goodness- That’s a vast sum.
No wonder they are trafficked when there are these profits to be made.
Someone is making a very good living out of this.

They must be absolutely laughing all the way to the bank.

Picking up strays- Keeping them in compounds
Packing them in those transports-
Romanian vets have been falsifying papers as well ( Brucellosis ) it’s loophole that needs closing.

oakleaffy · 22/02/2025 20:23

@Preciousmemory They want ANOTHER adoption fee for this aggressive dog?

Jeez it’s a license to print money.

Is there a place where it can be reported?

TyrannasaurusJex · 22/02/2025 20:23

OP, you came on here to ask for advice. The VAST majority of responders have told you to put the dog to sleep and yet you are STILL acting like no one has said that and it's not even an option. What exactly were you hoping to get out of this post? That someone would come on and say "oo he sounds dreamy, I'll take him"??

minsmum · 22/02/2025 20:34

We have a rescue dog from Oman the rescue bring them over and then keep them in foster for six months minimum to get an idea of their temperment. I asked the woman who runs it why they did that and her answer was that she would never forgive herself if anything happened to an adult or child. So they take the time to make sure. You don't get offered any dogs in Oman just ones that have lived here for at least that length of time. Because of this they can't rescue many and like uk rescued you pay one fee and the dog is neutered, all jabs are up to date and you get all the paperwork from Oman as well as the import paperwork for your vet. We had long conversations with the foster carers before we decided and afterwards the head of the rescue kept I in touch and still does. We have had him 18 months now with no problems

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/02/2025 20:35

Uh, Rabies isn't unheard of in Romania.

saladandchipp · 22/02/2025 20:36

@TyrannasaurusJex OP is answering questions and taking advice. Hectoring and criticising is not helpful. It's 830pm on a Saturday night. She's weighing up options that don't put her in breach of the law.

This is like on relationships where people advise leaving NOW. it's not as easy as that.

One of my old reactive rescues needed to be PTS quite urgently out of hours and honestly it was NOT easy even though we'd owned him for years. Vets aren't prepared to risk making a mistake and PTS before due diligence is complete.

Newfoundzestforlife · 22/02/2025 20:36

That thing needs to go, your family come first.

She doesn’t owe it to you, or anyone on here to tell us exactly what she’s going to to do, a mere couple of hours after she started the thread!

No-one goes in to rescuing a dog expecting they’re going to be having them put to sleep within a few weeks. PTS is undoubtedly the right thing to do in this situation , but it’s going to take some getting her head around!.

fatandhappyxxx · 22/02/2025 20:37

He needs to be PTS

LadyWiddiothethird · 22/02/2025 20:39

I have had a. Romania rescue dog for over 11 years,he is a delight.Never had a problem,he was carefully assessed as was I before he came to live with me.I went to see him at the kennels several times.

Some of the comments on here are bloody ridiculous about Romanian dogs.

This one the OP has clearly needs to be euthanised.

SnoozingFox · 22/02/2025 20:39

Agree with everyone else - one way trip to the vets.

Also as an aside - this is what happens when well-meaning people import maltreated and abused animals into the UK from goodness only knows what background. Should be absolutely illegal.

BlueCupOrangeCup · 22/02/2025 20:41

Preciousmemory · 22/02/2025 18:23

As soon as I said that he needed to be rehomed I was told he is no longer my responsibility that they are the owners , they are the ones the chip is registered to so he no longer belongs to me and they are the only one to decide what will happen. This is all in their contract that I am repeatedly being told I am In breach of as I let two of my family come to my house on the 10th day which has put him In a traumatic situation. Despite the daily constant attacks on my husband who he lives with. I very much am getting the blame for being irresponsible yet I have pleaded for help. Sent a video of my husband being attacked to be told for him to give him a high value treat

?!?! 😱 Bananas.

Dogs with complex behavioural issues + positive reward only training = very sad ending for everyone. Especially the dog.

If you do decide to keep the dog you need a balanced trainer and steer clear of anyone who says they are all positive only or positive reward based.

People don't get dogs from UK rescues as the UK rescues have insane rules like there must be one person not working and at home all the time. Have you tried to get a dog from a UK rescue recently? Their requirements are mad.

Better mad requirements than a mad dog.

What do they do with dogs they find are unsuitable for rehoming?

I'm obviously not suggesting she trots off to the vet right now 🙄 but she's not even acknowledging the suggestion that most people are making.

SnoozingFox · 22/02/2025 20:48

Also on the contract/legal aspect - don't let them scare you. Get it put to sleep and then if they want to go legal, let them. They won't,

I don't think she owes me anything, but I think it is a bit frustrating to ask for advice and then not even acknowledge the advice that the majority of people are suggesting.

I know 💔 I am angry at myself to

Please don’t be angry with yourself. You thought you were doing a good thing. Be angry with the ‘rescue’ who have clearly misled you on both his temperament and neutering status. Speak with your vet, give him the whole ugly truth and see what he says. You sound like a kind person and ultimately having him PTS will also be a kindness - to your family and by preventing the possibility of him being rehomed to an unsuitable family. Good luck op.

Friartruckster · 22/02/2025 20:53

This thread has given me a respect for UK rescues. Although perhaps the rigour of their requirements are feeding the import to meet demand..

Rhinohides · 22/02/2025 20:54

Really don’t understand why people don’t realise if these animals were okay they would be rehomed in their own country. You have imported a whole load of problem into this country and as others have said put him to sleep
If you don’t, and something does happen, you will likely be given criminal convictions

Friartruckster · 22/02/2025 20:55

And yes op, whatever decision made was contingent on the vet’s advice.

SnoozingFox · 22/02/2025 20:55

@Honeyroar if you're bothered about Romanian street dogs then i'm sure there are Romanian charities which neuter or rehome or whatever. Donate to them.

Importing these feral animals into the UK expecting them to be marvellous family pets is just ridiculous. Should be completely illegal.

sageGreen81 · 22/02/2025 20:59

Mate are you bonkers put the dog to sleep
