Kids eat free discrimination

BigBaoBun · 21/02/2025 13:50

Some restaurants offer a kids eat free/ kids eat for £1 offer during the half term but this is usually (not always) when one adult buys a main meal the restaurant allows one free kids meal. I have noticed a lot of parents with multiple children complaining that certain restaurants are being unfair as they only get one free kids meal. Particularly single parents saying it's discrimination against them. One woman was complaining that she has 3 kids and it isn't fair because only one can eat free and the restaurant should be giving them all a free meal. Aibu to think that this isn't discrimination and you can't expect all kids to eat for free?

Don't have so many bloody kids if you can't afford to feed them then, these cafes and restaurants aren't a charity and they don't owe anyone anything.

I don't think that is the issue, I would guess the lady in question saw the "kids eat free" advertisement, ignored everything else including the terms and conditions, and decided this means all her children get to eat free. People are very good at seeing only what they want to see.

theprincessthepea · 22/02/2025 20:28

It’s definitely not discrimination.

I was a single parent for almost a decade - if I had 2 children during that time I would ask a friend to come and be the second adult - plus eating out is a treat anyway, that’s what one of my friends would do who was a single parent of 2.

Plus kids don’t eat that much anyway and you could probably use the deal to create a meal for 3 anyway.

If parents want to call that discrimination - then maybe they should also complain about family tickets always being for 4 people …

If anything it's discrimination against adult customers without kids who are presumably subsidising this scheme through higher prices but are unable to benefit from it.

Surely that's like saying if toilet rolls are on a BOGOF offer you should be able to buy one and get two free if you've got two toilets in your house?

That would be a BOGROLOF, presumably.

JustMyView13 · 21/02/2025 14:50

So many unfair assumptions are made in your comment.

I agree with only one child being fed free, if that’s the policy.

But your comment makes out women choose to be single parents, when in the vast majority of cases that’s not true.

You could say - perhaps if the men stepped up and fed their children they created, then these people wouldn’t need to depend on freebies. That would arguably be a more fair and accurate representation of the situation many single mums find themselves in.

Yes, most men are crap.

Let's just get rid of this promotion altogether and everything will be simpler.

It's not discrimination, but I do think the "Kids eat free/cheap this half term" notices put out as though it's going to mean children whose parents can't afford to eat can now be fed should be genuinely children eating free (or very cheap) with no strings attached.

I printed one off for someone who was struggling, and then read through them, and all barring one would have cost more to feed their children (even if it had been all children with one adult) than just getting stuff from the supermarket.

Hang on, what?

It’s come as a shock to you that eating out is more expensive than preparing and eating food at home?!

You do realise that ’Kids eat free’ is just a marketing technique some restaurants use to increase footfall during the school holidays right? It’s not some charity endeavour, these are businesses that exist to make money.

Differentstarts · 22/02/2025 21:04

Relationship status has absolutely nothing to do with this. Do people think if your in a relationship that your partner is always around. Like most people if I take the kids out for lunch in the holidays my partners at work. And on the otherside to that a lot of single parents will meet up with friends for lunch. So I don't see what being a single parent has to do with it

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/02/2025 21:05

Yeah people are confusing commercial restaurants with some sort of government initiative!

Its basically a BOGOF deal, except that the OF is substantially cheaper than the one you’re buying.

I couldn’t got into a supermarket and say “these pizzas (say) are BOGOF but I have three children, so you have to give me three free ones to one paid pizza”

However, I guess it’s misleading if restaurants advertise it as “kids eat free” with the actual position only in tiny letters.

AngelicKaty · 22/02/2025 21:07

@BigBaoBun Of course YANBU OP - this is not discrimination. I assume that in the small print for these offers it will say something like "One adult meal paid for, one kid's meal for free" so if one parent is present with however many kids, one of those kids' meals will be free, and if two parents are present, two of those kids' meals will be free. There will always be people who want to try it on, but regardless, they're still getting at least one child's meal free.

Differentstarts · 22/02/2025 21:09

Always read the small print rather then arguing with the staff because your to stupid to read a sign

onwardsup4 · 22/02/2025 21:15

@LiquoriceAllsorts2 of course, I'm just saying it's a good deal. Even then 9 times out of ten the adult will be buying at least an over priced coffee anyway

Boysgrownbutstillathome · 22/02/2025 21:17

I used to buy my growing and very hungry boys adult meals and I had the free child's meal!

@RainingRoses -presumtious? Just because a single lady was chance her luck at every kid with her being "entitled"to eat for free - doesnt mean she can not afford to feed her children.!!!
Realistically she could potentially approach other adult diners without children +if they are willing request the "freebie"entitlement is served to her table.
In which case -i think id probably let 2 extra kids meals slide....swings and roundabouts.

But do you actually think that would have been a reasonable thing to do? I think harassing other diners would be just as entitled as trying to blag extra free meals.

BigBaoBun · 21/02/2025 14:07

I said this but was called judgemental, I'm a single parent myself but I don't expect restaurants to allow them all to eat for free 😂

Bet you are for the death penalty and don’t believe in tvs in prison cells, and think people on benefits shouldn’t have sky tv. Probably one for shooting the boats too

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 22/02/2025 21:43

What are legal age paramenters for a 'kid'?

If my Dad is 84 and I am 60 I'm stll his 'kid',and so I wonder if can I get a free meal?
(I will, of cousre, wheel him along the counter so he can point at what he would choose before I load up my plate, some what akin to a model of the Matterhorn.)

Each restaurant usually set their own age limit usually 12

soupyspoon · 22/02/2025 21:50

Just because someone says something is discrimination or any other thing, or that they feel this and that about something, it doesnt mean they're right, it doesnt mean their comment or view has any validity to it, it doesnt mean it even needs to be debated. Some things are just obvious.

Oh dear, that's a bit of a nuisance.

I'll probably just have a slice of half raw toast then.😕

Franjipanl8r · 22/02/2025 22:17

Nothing stopping them bringing another adult friend or relative to get another free kids meal.

That would be the ultimate in cheeky-fuckery.

Sometimeswinning · 22/02/2025 22:33

I mean most of these offers are made in the guise of making things easier/nicer in the holidays. The size of a kids meal would probably cover up to about 5/6 years old.

I can’t get too protective or worried about a company which could most probably afford to make a far more generous offer. I think Asda had a deal where kids ate for a pound regardless of whether an adult purchased a meal. That was nice.

I do agree staff should not suffer the headache of someone complaining.

theboffinsarecoming · 22/02/2025 22:38

RainingRoses · 21/02/2025 13:56

Perhaps if the lady with 3 children can’t afford to feed them, she shouldn’t have had 3. It’s not discrimination, it’s in same category as “human rights” that people complain about when they can’t get what they want.

Well perhaps she's a widow.

Stopsnowing · 22/02/2025 22:41

The other day I saw a ad for one free child holiday place per two paying adults. I think for single parent families they should get 50 per cent off one child to be fair.

Laura95167 · 22/02/2025 22:43

Really they should look at it as they got a discount.

If an adult meal is £10 a kids meal is £5 & youre a single adult and youve 3 kids its costing you £21 instead of £25

If you were 2 adults and 3 kids it would be £27.

It was actually £6 cheaper as the single parent buying 4 meals than the family buying 5
