Kids eat free discrimination

Some restaurants offer a kids eat free/ kids eat for £1 offer during the half term but this is usually (not always) when one adult buys a main meal the restaurant allows one free kids meal. I have noticed a lot of parents with multiple children complaining that certain restaurants are being unfair as they only get one free kids meal. Particularly single parents saying it's discrimination against them. One woman was complaining that she has 3 kids and it isn't fair because only one can eat free and the restaurant should be giving them all a free meal. Aibu to think that this isn't discrimination and you can't expect all kids to eat for free?

These 'deals' are just a marketing ploy. Unless you have already planned on taking the kids out for a meal, then you are actually spending more than you intended. They are never a good offer. If your friend wants help with food, she should check out local community centres (one near me has a cafe that does free soup on a Thursday, and another runs a 'holiday club' in the school holidays where they offer lunch and arts and crafts - parents need to stay and also get a free lunch, again usually soup or pasta).

Sorry to clarify this isn't a friend I was reading the comments under an add for the restaurant and there was lots of parents angry that it didn't include all children and saying that it's discrimination to single parents. Lots of "I'm a single parent to 3/4/5 so what am I suppose to do..." pay?!

Seriously for real? youve noticed that instance repeatedly coming up?....in multiple eateries.?...then subdivided into single parents of multi troops? !!!
one lady. ok
i doubt that.
I think providing any advertisement details one free kids meal with every adult meal theres no room for confusuion.

Comments under adds for multiple restaurants yes

Some people just want everything fo free. That's their problem!

Just a polite reminder that some people who have children, or multiple children situation does change. My friend was absolutely fine going about life with 2 kids until her DP left her suddenly for someone else, would you tell her she shouldn’t be having 2 if she now struggles to get by sometimes?

I do have some sympathy for your friend but ... yes, I'd be telling her that she couldn't have two free meals.

Did anyone reply 'make them a sandwich at home?' 😅

Does she think she should get free meals for both of them with one adult meal purchase? If not then it's not about her, is it?

overthinkingandworried · 21/02/2025 14:23

Surely the woman with 3 dc could have just got 1 adult and 1 child meal and asked for 2 extra plates and shared it out ?

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 21/02/2025 14:27

Aye of course you've seen this a lot and aren't just shit stirring.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 21/02/2025 14:28

Surely that's like saying if toilet rolls are on a BOGOF offer you should be able to buy one and get two free if you've got two toilets in your house?

It's not discrimination but if I was running a business I would probably allow twins to get free meals with one parent paying.

You'd deffo get people lying and abusing that, though, if they have any kids with similar-ish ages.

"Yes, isn't it strange how these things work: Jimmy has always been by far the bigger twin and Katie much, much smaller having been born 6 years after her brother!"

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 21/02/2025 14:35

I'll bet they already see the offer abused - or at least stretched as far as possible - with parents deliberately having the cheapest possible adult meal/combo and then choosing the dearest free kids' one for their child.

yourmaw · 21/02/2025 14:35

@RainingRoses -presumtious? Just because a single lady was chance her luck at every kid with her being "entitled"to eat for free - doesnt mean she can not afford to feed her children.!!!
Realistically she could potentially approach other adult diners without children +if they are willing request the "freebie"entitlement is served to her table.
In which case -i think id probably let 2 extra kids meals slide....swings and roundabouts.

Don’t see how this is discrimination.

What I always thought was unfair was when restaurants offered free / discounted meals to children below a certain height, rather than based on age. That arguably is discrimination for taller families. Not sure how that’s allowed.

Actually (having had 2 tall dc and 1 average) I think that's fair enough because so many people lie about the child's age. I saw someone once with a very embarrassed teen with broken voice swearing he was under 10 and just "well developed".

The one below I spotted locally made me laugh though.

on the basis of a few comments underneath an ad 😀

Wonderfulstuff · 21/02/2025 14:35

It's a nice to have not an essential. And if people start throwing around terms like 'discrimination' then it's just as easy for the eateries to remove the offer.

Eldermilleniallyogii · 21/02/2025 14:36

Some people are so entitled. I'd throw them out.

Lemonade2011 · 21/02/2025 14:37

I have 4 so one one could eat free however one is better than nothing some people just think they are owed something

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 21/02/2025 14:27

Aye of course you've seen this a lot and aren't just shit stirring.

I can well see how you'd observe this if you frequently went to a busy place that has this offer, especially in half term, at weekends or early tea time.

Spidey66 · 21/02/2025 14:38

Children don't have to eat out. When I was a kid, (50 years back, admittedly) eating out generally meant a picnic in the park, with some sandwiches in tin foil, fruit, crisps, and if we were lucky a can of pop each and maybe if we were very lucky an ice cream. The only time I remember eating out was going to Wimpy for my birthday! We weren't poor, it just wasn't the done thing.

I think it's nice if restaurants offer such a deal but it's mainly a marketing thing surely!

How is that abuse of the offer someone buys the cheapest adult meal? The retailer can make exclusions if they see fit. The profits made on the absolute dog shit they serve mean they can do these free meal schemes and appear charitable. Why the fuck are we worried about the poor multi-billion corporations?

BigBaoBun · 21/02/2025 14:40

Already said where ive seen loads of people complaining and it's under advertising for the restaurant 🤷🏻‍♀️

I know a woman who at 19 took on 3 of her sister's children. I'm sure she was judged when people saw a young woman with three under 10.

Maybe restaurants should offer a 'family meal' for up to 2 adults and 2 children that could be one adult and 3 children.

What’s the chances you’d paste the thread?
