Does anyone eat meat anymore without sauces and marinates?

So many different flavors around for meat today.
Sauces, rubs, marinades.
Just wondered does anyone just eat plain meat anymore??

No, I never have, always loved a condiment, gravy or sauce. Plus I have swallowing issues sometimes and dry food without sauces or condiments is the worst.

I only ever eat plainly cooked meat. I actively avoid meat in any sort of marinade as they are usually UPF.

How is a marinade upf?

it’s pretty much the definition of non-upf- things like lemon juice, salt, spices, yogurt, pineapple etc.

where are you getting the upf’s from?

CandyCane457 · 21/02/2025 14:14

Duck, I’d eat without a marinade or spices.

Sausages if I put them in a pasta bake, that would be without any sort of marinade or herb/rub.

Also steak, and if we do burgers on the bbq.

Otherwise I think everything else we cook has something on jt!

What nonsense. Have you ever heard of making your own marinade? It's a very basic skill.

When did anyone eat it plain? Would usually be in a sauce, have gravy, or a side sauce like horseradish/mint/mustard etc.

Who's out there eating a turkey leg like Henry the eighth?

My DH will only eat plain meat. Just a bit of sea salt on steak etc. He thinks sauces ruin the meat.

To be fair he usually buys really high quality meat, you only really need sauces if you're trying to hide a cheap cut or make it stretch.

ForRealCat · 21/02/2025 14:17

Steak, chicken, lamb- although the lamb would always have a gravy made from the juices, whereas the chicken or steak I'd happily have it as it comes on a salad or with chips etc.

I might use marinades or rubs, but not often.

Ohhh agree on the duck actually. And most offal. Haggis too, but that's already spiced so may not count.

A lovely pork chop is ruined by a marinade

Would you not put ketchup or bbq sauce on a burger?

presumably if sausages are going in a pasta bake there’s a sauce in there too, you’re not just doing pasta and sausage?

I’m veggie now but can’t remember ever eating “plain” meat. Ketchup or salt as basic in your sausage or bacon sarnie, then lemon juice with roast chicken, au poivre with steak, even something as simple as butter or garlic butter.

Pork chops are awful. Char Sui pork on the other hand...

jay55 · 21/02/2025 14:30

A good steak I'll happily have with just veg. And pork belly too.

Last weekend I got a rotisserie chicken from m&s and it was so good just on its own.

No sauce on a burger for me, otherwise I would’ve said 🤣

But v true about the pasta bake sauce, I was more focusing on marinating the actual sausage first, which I don’t do.

gumpit · 21/02/2025 14:40

@whatonearthisgoingonnow - steak is probably the only meat I'd agree with. But still cook mine with a little garlic.

MindenReload · 21/02/2025 14:43

I don't understand the 'roast' comments. Surely you have gravy with your roast.

And what do you mean by 'plain' OP? No spices?
I don't think I've ever eaten 'plain' meat.

Ickity · 21/02/2025 14:49

I don’t put anything on a roast chicken. But otherwise yes, always some form of flavouring. Even if it’s just Cajun spices or something like that.

ManchesterLu · 21/02/2025 13:48

Sometimes I buy a pack of chicken just for the sake of it, and then just sit eating chicken.

Same

Roast chicken drumsticks and thighs are delicious in picnics and can be eaten hot or cold.

PastaBolognese · 21/02/2025 14:56

It's a good question. I'm sure way, way back when I would occasionally eat plain chicken breast or something - my other half is a gravy freak though , so even if eating plain sausages I have some gravy on it but wasn't fussed on gravy before him. But otherwise, yes, I marinate most things, chicken thighs in a lemony garlic one is my favourite. The only exception would be a steak, can enjoy that with just a bit of mustard, but obviously some of the cooking juices.

I guess cooking expectations are higher nowadays and we can get a bit spoiled. It's amazing how nice a piece of plain cold cooked chicken with salt and pepper is, though.

maximalistmaximus · 21/02/2025 15:00

I eat good quality meat & don't put anything on it. Salt on chicken but that's it.

Roast beef (or any roast)
Chicken
Turkey
Steaks
Chops, lamb & pork
With gammon I'd have pineapple on it as outside I'd find it too salty but I almost never have that.

I never liked sauces/wet food as a child & that has stuck.

Some variations I will have are homemade apple sauce with pork or cheese chops.

I have gravy at Xmas but not year round.

EveryDayisFriday · 21/02/2025 15:02

We always have flavoured or seasoned meat. Steak has steak seasoning. Pork and Chicken is BBQ, Chinese or salt and pepper chilli seasoning. We don't even eat unsmoked bacon.

I eat a lot of meat recently to up my protein, my evening meals are mainly flavoured chicken thighs with veg.

Dahlietta · 21/02/2025 15:03

Such a weird thing to be judgy about.

dothedanceofjoy · 21/02/2025 15:13

Me. I don't really like any sauces. I buy good quality meat and eat it with a bit of salt and sometimes pepper. I buy it because I like the taste of meat, so why would I want a load of slop hiding the flavour? This tracks with how I eat generally, tbh, I don't really enjoy sloppy or wet types of food, never have.

Gravy I would only have a little if the meat was dry (never happens at home, but sometimes if eating out).

twilighteaser · 21/02/2025 15:14

Yes! But am not living in Uk. Here in Italy we rarely use sauces, most meat, fish and veg is just given a pinch of salt, a squeeze of lemon and a splash of very good quality extra virgin olive oil after it's cooked and that's it!

Idontjetwashthefucker · 21/02/2025 15:31

Yep, I happily eat a good ribeye with salt and pepper, and roast lamb, chicken and pork without sauces.

KrisAkabusi · 21/02/2025 14:05

I can't imagine anything less flavourful than poached chicken!

Depends what you put with it to flavour it while it's poaching. I include lots of onion and carrot and a whole bunch of herbs. The finished chicken is moist and very flavourful
