Oh fuck…on holiday of a lifetime and it’s going to rain until we go home

It’s not quite 6am, day three of our 7 day holiday in Mexico. It started raining last night and I’ve checked all the weather apps this morning and it’s relentless until the day we go home!

I did not factor this in. We’ve done one of our excursions (to Chichen Itzá) yesterday in the sunshine, the rest of the week was meant to be snorkelling and swimming until Monday when we’ve spent nearly £500 to go to an adventure park for the day - Monday is now forecasted massive thunder storms.

The resort does not appear to be set up for constant rain. There are no indoor activities apart from kids clubs and bars. We don’t drink and have one adventurous teenager with us.

Please talk me down a bit and give me some ideas. I haven’t actually left the room yet today as breakfast isn’t for another hour so I will talk to the concierge in a bit and find out if they have anything different planned.

Has anyone experienced this? I know tropical rain is a thing but a solid week of rain in February wasn’t expected. Is the holiday a wash out or am I being dramatic?

Is it torrential rain? I quite like swimming in the rain.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 21/02/2025 10:58

Can you not swim or snorkel in the rain? You are submerged in water either way.

MagicPharmacist · 21/02/2025 10:59

Torrential right now! But yeah I’m not averse to swimming in it, and it is still 29 degrees. Not sure what the sea will be like though.

Watch out for sharks they love to ambush in the rain!

Oh God I can’t tell if you’re joking or if I need to add sharks to my anxiety bucket today.

I nearly trod on a stingray (maybe just a ray, I dunno) on my first snorkelling escapade on Wednesday.

This is all very new to me. We usually go to Haven.

I quite like swimming in the rain. I do a bit of wild swimming and just floating in the water with the rain pattering across your face and listening to it under the water is really meditative. I find it so relaxing. Rain/ sea will be warm in Mexico too.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 21/02/2025 11:07

Apart from during the thunderstorms maybe, you can go out in the rain. I agree it's disappointing, but if you let it get to you, you've got rain and you're also annoyed. If you go out and enjoy yourselves anyway, you've just got rain. It can still be the holiday of a lifetime and you'll have fun reminisicing about the rain one day.

Orangesandlemons82 · 21/02/2025 11:08

Are you near any of the Xplor reports? The one we went to was mostly underground in caves and had lots of water activities that would be fine in the rain. The food was also surprisingly good there!

Shark attacks are incredibly rare. The leading country for unprovoked shark attacks is the U.S. and given it’s size/ coastline / number of people who go in the water it’s less than 30 a year. Your much more likely to die travelling in a car to the airport than you are from sharks.

Yes! That’s where we’re going on Monday! We’re really looking forward to the insane zip lines and I’m worried they won’t be running if it’s thunderstorms.

But yeah most of it is underground caves so we will still enjoy that.

im mostly a ‘make the best of it’ type and I’m outwardly cheery for DH and DS’s sake. Just inwardly having a wobble as we were so excited for sunshine.

Day by day it might be periods of heavy showers?

TriangleLight · 21/02/2025 11:12

I do feel for you 🙈 But if it’s not cold I’d just go out in the rain and do and see what you can. And it might not be as bad as the forecast!

Could you do 2 days there, if you are struggling to find things to do in the rain? My teenager would have happily gone back again the next day. Also, are you near any of the off road driving/buggies etc - they would be fun in the rain.

mugglewump · 21/02/2025 11:13

You haven't said where you are in Mexico, but if you've been to Chechin Itza, you are probably in the Yucatan. The Mexican buses are amazing so plan some day trips to Merida, Campeche and Chetumal (easily doable from Tulum). There are also those cenotes around Tulum that are worth a visit with snorkelling.

Letsgocamping67 · 21/02/2025 11:14

If Cancun area. You can get the bus to Walmart. It’s massive has food and there’s something for everyone.

Doggymummar · 21/02/2025 11:14

I've been to the Caribbean in rainy season a few times, it's the only way I would be able to afford it. It generally just tips down for half an hour then brightened up. We just jumped in the pool for half an hour then carried on.

Yes! We went there! There was also a shopping Mall in that area that was quite nice to get out of the heat (or in this case rain!)

Porcuporpoise · 21/02/2025 11:18

No idea about the climate where you are. But when I lived in the tropics it would certainly rain hard every day during the wet season but not necessarily for the full day - often once or twice for an hour or so each day. So the forecast would show heavy rain each day but it was certainly possible to do stuff in the dry periods in between.

Mulledjuice · 21/02/2025 11:18

Defo go to some cenotes

Stowickthevast · 21/02/2025 11:19

Weather forecasts can be quite unreliable if it's unseasonal rain. It's more likely to be storms with dry spells in between. Just pick your moments and be ready to be spontaneous. We had this in Costa Rica, on our way to the hanging bridges and realised it was raining so hard we couldn't see much beyond our hands. Ended up changing for some hot springs instead and went the next day in a break in the storm.

It is annoying though when you're expecting bright sunshine.

Hottchoc · 21/02/2025 11:21

If it's the xscape park lots of it is inside caves!

A day out to Walmart?

WonderingWanda · 21/02/2025 11:22

Do Xsenses park as well, I think that would be fine in the rain as its more stuff to look at rather than do, it has some indoor and some outdoor stuff.

It won't be thunder all day so the parks might just have temporary closures on zip lines.

You can do walking food tours in cancun.

Also do a cenote snorkeling trip, that should be fine in the rain.

Leafy74 · 21/02/2025 11:24

I went on a once in a lifetime holiday once - never again.

Mumofgirls39 · 21/02/2025 11:25

Ah gutting OP but this happened on our honeymoon in the Maldives. Easier on honeymoon than with an active teen admittedly although there's not much else other than sunbathing and water sports to do in the Maldives - certainly no shops to explore and activities tend to involve the surrounding water. We embraced it though and had spa treatments like a couple massage, I had a facial, slow dinners, we both read and slept loads, bubble baths, loads of good chats and laughter watching the rain from our balcony. We went in our private pool too in the rain after spending so much money on it. We could either moan about how our honeymoon was spoilt or enjoy being in paradise despite the rain. Honestly, the weather was pretty dramatic and romantic even with the storms and we still had the most amazing time. One of my favourite memories of all time is my husband and I getting caught in torrential rain and a storm and legging it back to our room. It forced us to take a slower pace than we planned and we had more conversations and therefore made a different kind of core memories.

I'd speak to concierge to find out where you can get rain macs/umbrellas etc and research some activities where the rain doesn't matter as much.
