Oh fuck…on holiday of a lifetime and it’s going to rain until we go home

It’s not quite 6am, day three of our 7 day holiday in Mexico. It started raining last night and I’ve checked all the weather apps this morning and it’s relentless until the day we go home!

I did not factor this in. We’ve done one of our excursions (to Chichen Itzá) yesterday in the sunshine, the rest of the week was meant to be snorkelling and swimming until Monday when we’ve spent nearly £500 to go to an adventure park for the day - Monday is now forecasted massive thunder storms.

The resort does not appear to be set up for constant rain. There are no indoor activities apart from kids clubs and bars. We don’t drink and have one adventurous teenager with us.

Please talk me down a bit and give me some ideas. I haven’t actually left the room yet today as breakfast isn’t for another hour so I will talk to the concierge in a bit and find out if they have anything different planned.

Has anyone experienced this? I know tropical rain is a thing but a solid week of rain in February wasn’t expected. Is the holiday a wash out or am I being dramatic?

Ocean Riviera Paradise?

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 22/02/2025 16:49

Is there any chance of going somewhere else in Mexico for the week? If not then lots of gym and yoga and reading books

BrieHugger · 22/02/2025 16:59

Have things improved @MagicPharmacist . We were in that area about 20 years ago and loved it, there was some rain but it was fleeting and as soon as the sun reappeared it dried instantly. So annoying though, when it’s something you’ve saved up for and looked forward to, not fair!

MagicPharmacist · 22/02/2025 17:07

It’s glorious today. Yesterday was indeed a wash out but I read lots and had a big nap. Today has been sunbathing, swimming and yoga. Massage later. The boys haven’t left the pool.

Everything here is literally jawdroppingly beautiful. Even the rain storms!

I’m pleased @MagicPharmacist !

On my honeymoon to St Lucia, the locals called it liquid sunshine, which i thought was fab - and absolutely as far away from the UK rain as you could get! As you have found - weather apps are notoriously inaccurate for tropical climes; i'd go by what the sky is doing, rather than the app! It is likely to rain in the tropics.. but rarely all day, and even if so, it'll be warm and nothing a nice cocktail won't fix!

PinkPinkPinkBlue · 22/02/2025 20:19

@MagicPharmacist what resort are you in please? Would you recommend it? We are looking at Mexico for next Feb and the some reviews are shocking.

Littlebrownfreckle · 23/02/2025 07:03

@MagicPharmacist I’ve been to the Caribbean and Mexico lots. The forecast might say rain all day but it’ll actually more likely be a downpour and then blue skies. They get frequent heavy rain but it brightens up really quickly. You’ll be fine it won’t be wall to wall rain like the uk! Enjoy!

CerealPosterHere · 23/02/2025 07:20

It’s years since I’ve been but I think the Xcaret park would be ok in the rain if you had jackets on. I appreciate you may not have packed waterproofs to Mexico though! But if you can buy some cheap lightweight jackets it could be possible. Excursions are expensive in Mexico but car hire is cheap. They will deliver a car to your hotel. I drove me and Dd about and we survived. We drove to Tulum to see the ruins and also to Coba. Again you could do both of those with waterproofs if raining. We stopped off at various cenotes on the way back, really would recommend cenotes, they’re so unique to the area.

Alfiesmom74 · 23/02/2025 09:20

Yup our honeymoon to Cancun in 2006 rained solidly for 8 out of the 14 days. So disappointing but we made the most of it. Our hotel did various indoor activities but we wanted to be sunbathing and seeing the sights. Does your hotel have any sister hotels that might be doing anything indoors? Really hope it clears up for you and you get to enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Jenmc21 · 23/02/2025 10:15

If your in cancun then the Renaissance Mall is lovely- great food court and I think they have mini golf too. Also a huge cinema that shows films in English x

Julimia · 23/02/2025 10:17

Such is life! As yet can't control the weather. Just make the best of it and enjoy as you can. You may never pass this way again !

We are in the Grand Sirenis.

Take some of the reviews with a pinch of salt. I read some bad ones of here that don’t resonate at all.

The hotel is gorgeous and clean, the food is insanely good and varied and the beach has a coral reef.

Are you near the water park?? Can’t recall what it’s called but you wear a life vest the whole time. There’s a lazy river type thing. Snorkelling. Loads of water things but they aren’t big fast slides if I recall. You have to wear environmentally suncream. It’s been about 20 years since we went but I enjoyed that. We did August when it also rains a lot. We did the chitchenitza trip, got to the top of one of the pyramids when the heavens opened!! Was on and off rain though.

I feel for you when it’s a holiday of a lifetime. We did Australia this time of year 12 years ago and it rained for 2 of the 3 weeks there. A couple of sunny days at the start and finish. Was so disappointing. But we did try and make the most of things.

Snoopey · 24/02/2025 00:02

Would recommend a trip to one of the cenotes if you haven't been already Op

SilvieBear · 24/02/2025 00:11

💯 echo the cenote recommendations - they are awesome

@Aposterhasnoname

I knew someone would jump on @Letsgocamping67 idea to go to Walmart. I love going to another country and seeing products and stuff in supermarkets you don't see at home.

Also another poster has said they went to the same place and enjoyed going to Walmart.

fruitypancake · 24/02/2025 16:26

They often get the forecast wrong , don't despair, it might be that jt just rains here and the there and the rest of the time is sunny .

DetectiveSleuth · 24/02/2025 20:15

How disappointing 😢 We’re going away next week and so far it’s predicting rain for 3 of the 7 days so I’ve booked the spa for one of the rainy days. Could you do something similar?

Oh god Walmart was top of the list of places to go to, and Sephora (before they came to the U.K.) and Bath and Bodyworks (before they came to Next).

I went to Xcaret Occidental and it was amazing.

MagicPharmacist · 25/02/2025 20:29

Last day today. Going home in a couple of hours.

There have been brief periods of rain but other than the first rainy day none have been a washout.

We have done loads! Snorkelling, swimming in the sea and the pools, yoga, shooting, archery, cycling, Xplore park (bonkers zip lines and water slide as well as cenote swimming and driving a jeep through underground caves). We’ve eaten a huge selection of excellent food and they catered to us non drinkers brilliantly (unlike Tunisia last year where they tried to give us alcohol all the time).

This has been the most amazing week ever. I highly recommend this area, and in fact this resort (grand Sirenis).

Rule numero uno ALWAYS ALWAYS CHECK THE WEATHER !
My parents booked 2 weeks in Thailand they did not check the weather they had booked the one month where its constant storms and monsoons the entire holiday was a total waste of money
