Daffodils £1 Is this the best cheap treat going?

Just bought daffodils at £1 a (small!) bunch. My favourite (non chocolate) cheapish treat.

I buy a bunch every week while they're available. Definitely smaller bunches this year though.

I look forward to daffs as soon as the Christmas decs come down though the first few weeks of January the daffs from Sainsburys were rather disappointing in that the first lot didn't unfurl and the second week they were rather pathetic. This week's are by far the best and have large trumpets and a nice scent. I like it when the shops get in their luxury daffs, only £2, and they have double daffs and fancy colours.

ThePoshUns · 21/02/2025 13:09

I usually buy a coupe of bunches at a time. I love daffs this time of year.

I have them in my kitchen and dining g room usually. I love the smell too.

With the endless crappy, grey weather we seem to have most days, it's my little bit of cheerfulness and optimism of better days to come ... hopefully. 😀

Yes, I often get some when I go in M&S.

Why are they so much cheaper than literally all other flowers? Anyone know?

PassingStranger · 21/02/2025 13:50

Nice.

My parents have some silk daffodils which they paid about £8. Then in the late spring, dig out their silk tulips. From mid October, their silk poinsettia. They have never lived in a flower friendly home.

Apparently it's driven by the supermarkets.

Slightly off topic, but I was looking to get an online shopping delivery from Asda and wanted some flowers. I searched for flowers, but was gobsmacked to see they were charging £4 for daffodils. I thought to myself that the price has gone up massively since last year and chose some other flowers instead. It was only when someone told me they were £1 in Morrisons that I logged back into Asda to check. It wasn't clear on the Asa website, but from the URL, I could tell that they were artificial flowers. Looking at the reviews, it appears that I wasn't the only one to make this mistake, as the people reviewing also thought they were getting real flowers.

I bought my first bunch of the year just now! I've been looking out for them for a couple of weeks, but this was the first time my Lidl had them.

Daffodils are my favourite flower. They're just so cheery and bright after a long dull winter. I'll buy a bunch or two or three every week until they're finished.

redpickle · 21/02/2025 15:03

I love them, especially in a jam jar. I do find if you get them too early in the year they can smell a bit of wee though!

Bjorkdidit · 21/02/2025 15:36

I've put mine in a pint glass before, in the absence of a small vase. I'm now thinking that a large pickle jar might also work.

Or not quite so cheap but everlasting are the Lego daffodils

Zusammengebrochen · 21/02/2025 15:38

I prefer my blue Hyacinth but will pick daffodils from the garden when they bloom.

WorriedRelative · 21/02/2025 15:47

Absolutely! Only 85p full price in Aldi, and once I got some in my too good to go box!

This probs sounds a stupid question but what vase do you use for dads. Any links would appreciated.

A Denby jug rather than a vase

AuntieMarys · 21/02/2025 15:49

Currently got 6 vases of daffodils and 2 of tulips dotted around the house
