Have strong words with?
I agree. It sounds so bloody sanctimonious to 'call someone out.'

After reading this thread I now have "Call me Al" going around on a loop in my head.

CheeseNBooze · 21/02/2025 02:56

@Ger1atricMillennial Me too!
If you'd be my bodyguard
I can be your long-lost pal
I can call you Betty, and Betty, when you call me…

ThereAreManyPathsToGoal · 21/02/2025 05:39

@Another2Cats very harsh acoustics, nice food, sloooow service (someone yesterday resorted to standing up and waving to be able to pay their bill) and needs to. But I am still in a bad mood 😁

@EmeraldRoulette who knows? I don’t do it, they saved seconds and I ended up sat next to them. Which was nice.

I once approached the till in the mid-price furniture shop to which I'd been given a gift voucher, for the very posh shop assistant to look at it with a wrinkled nose, have no idea how to proces the sale, and then excuse herself - with a genuine tinkly little laugh - by saying "We're just not really a shop that does gift vouchers". As if I'd forged it myself on a home printer.

I very much gave her this look 🤔

I’m always confused by assistants in fancy shops who look down on customers. It’s like they identify with the brand so much that they’ve convinced themselves they are the wealthy elite owner instead of being the one who has to clean the stockroom and cash up the till at closing time.

ThisFluentBiscuit · 20/02/2025 21:56

Told them off?
Said something?
Had a go at them?
Gave them a hard stare/dirty look?

I think the whole concept of calling out comes from the extra-virtue-signalling society of cancel culture that we have today. I don't think there's a previous equivalent as we weren't able to public-shame before social media.

You were, you just did it on the spot, LOUDLY!

Edited to add

Also photos in shops/pubs of shoplifters or banned for fighting. Love a public shaming mugshot!!!

Loving this delightful thread.
i have considered becoming a member of the V& A many times to get into a sold out exhibition but not being a Londoner dismissed the idea as too extravagant.
This makes me want to join one of them for the sheer hell of it!

I don’t live in London either but I get full value from my membership. I took three friends to the Chanel exhibition, two to the Diva and Naomi Campbell and another to the superb exhibition of Elton John’s photographic collection. The Cartier exhibition will be a sellout in about ten minutes and I bet I go to that more than once.

letshavetea · 21/02/2025 09:31

I don’t live in London (40 minute train ride away) then a tube to the V&A. It’s very easy and I have had my membership with guest pass for many years. There is always at least one excellent exhibition to see. Like @BIossomtoes I go with different friends or with my husband if he’s interested in the exhibitions on offfer. Friends like it because they can travel in from where they live and then we can meet up. This all started for us with the sold out David Bowie exhibition and has continued since. I’ve had membership of various other museums over the years (usually for sold out exhibitions) but this is the one I always keep up!

abnerbrownsdressinggown · 21/02/2025 09:35

Agree with pps that I never use the V&A members room - too noisy, busy and uninspiring when the main cafe has three of the nicest rooms in London! Last time I even tried to get into the members room it was a 30 minute queue for a table!

We used to be members of the NHM (dinosaur obsessed DS and used it mainly to jump the queue and use the cloakroom) and the new(ish) members room is lovely and never that busy - always a seat to eat our sandwiches and get a coffee or have lunch if we fancy it.

The Tate ones are good as well. I took out membership of the National Gallery for the Van Gogh this year, so need to investigate if they have one (I'll probably let this one lapse).

BeaLola · 21/02/2025 09:46

Cartier Exhibition I thought this would sell out really quickly like Chanel but I managed to get 2 tickets last week very easily for later in year - there was tonnes of choice - I didn't do it on one of the "release" days just one evening went onto website and booked.

Same. The only way to see the Van Gogh exhibition was to buy membership. I don’t envision renewing when it expires.

GalaxyWasOnOffer · 21/02/2025 12:28

@Agapornis It's the same situation with Benugo at Bletchley Park Trust & the London Transport Museum, & the staff there are delightful 🙂

@ADHDHDHDHD I suspect we're talking about the same manager and that's my experience too. @Coolasfeck is right in saying some staff in shops selling expensive items seem to put themselves at the level of those buying the items & treat the actual purchasers as the lowest. That's the feeling I get re: the manager (not that V&A exhibits are up for sale, but you take the point 😀)

@happystory was especially charming when I was on the receiving end of a full body eye check and a ‘the next floor is a members one’ complete with head tilt comment. I know I had been rained on but I didn’t look that bad.

Was it the same person who barged you that made the judgemental sarky comment? Unbelievably rude. When I have the misfortune to encounter somebody like that I enjoy the “kill them with kindness” approach, it confuses the fuck out of them!

Fullofpasta · 21/02/2025 19:44

Ben Miller (TV personality) pushed in front of me in a queue and I did call him out - loudly.

What used people say before 'call you out' became fashionable?

I recall people were ‘taken to one side’ or, perhaps more likely in this scenario ‘ remonstrated with’ ?

MaddestGranny · 21/02/2025 23:26

I generally try to say something like:
"Oh no. Not at all. Please. After you." whilst deliberately trying to keep all traces of sarcasm or irony out of my voice. 😁

MaddestGranny · 21/02/2025 23:33

@FattyLump when someone steps on my foot (in the Tube; at the cinema, theatre, wherever), I enjoy delivering the old chestnut:
"that's alright, I've got another one".

I love this!😆

@FeetLikeFlippers yes so deliberate I’m sure but each time there is someone who behaves like this! Inters about the accent comment earlier - I hadn’t actually spoken.

I think "call you out" probably dates back a few hundred years tbf? As in for a duel.

I think it's a relatively recent americanism. We used to say things like "I told him to his face" or "I read them the riot act"! Or "I gave them a piece of my mind" , and "gave them a bloody good talking too"!! can't to think of any more off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are some.

Museums and galleries always seem to attract a number of elitist twats like this unfortunately. I’ve been to a few talks/courses at the V&A and when the lunch break comes around there is always at least one person (usually an older woman with a bouffant and tweed) who feels the need to announce loudly that they are going to the members room.

As posted earlier, it dates back to the 1700s
