A glass of wine every night?

grizeldagreen · 20/02/2025 08:39

I've fallen into a habit of doing this pretty much every night. Just the one glass while cooking. I can make a bottle last over 4 nights doing this. So over a week it would be just less than two bottles. Does this sound ok from a consumption point of view?

To add I usually have a glass, eat my evening meal then have a cup of tea before bed! So it's not exactly a wild life. But I just find that a small glass of white wine adds something to my evening.

I think you'll be ok mate.

OrangeYaGlad · 20/02/2025 08:40

It's completely fine and normal

DazedDragon · 20/02/2025 08:42

I do this but a glass at 9pm. Just one.

I'm actually trying to break the habit as I don't find it a healthy one!

Adhikv · 20/02/2025 08:42

I was doing this and while health wise I wasn’t overly worried I did want to stop as for me it was to relieve stress and I wanted to form other habits. If for whatever reason you can’t have a glass of wine does it bother you?

No not at all. If I have to drive or go out somewhere it's all good. I think I mainly do it out of habit when I'm at home and have nothing else to do.

My 89 year old Aunt has a glass of wine every night with her dinner , I think you are fine it's hardly a slippery slope .

Zusammengebrochen · 20/02/2025 08:48

I'd consider how you feel if you cannot have that glass of wine - I don't feel that the consumption itself is an issue, more how dependent you are on it. Edit - I see someone else has just asked a similar thing and you have answered.

Drinking alcohol every single night is really not normal. It's a very unhealthy habit.

Octonaut4Life · 20/02/2025 09:04

If you're drinking a whole bottle of wine across four nights then those are 187ml glasses (ish) which are more than 2.3 units each so even if you never have more than one glass per night, you're drinking more than the 14 units per week maximum which is considered "low risk". You're increasing your risk of a range of illnesses if you drink this much on a regular basis - mouth cancer, stroke, breast cancer, heart disease... I wouldn't.

macshoto · 20/02/2025 09:06

Not that unusual at all.

If you are concerned, maybe consider having a night (or two) off a week?

In terms of keeping wine in good condition, I find Vinolok glass stoppers and small glass bottles (e.g. 200ml) ideal for keeping wine for longer periods of time once opened.

I haven't yet found a good bottle that is 175ml or 150ml, though - aesthetically I don't like plastic screw cap bottles for wine!

No it isn’t , but keep telling yourself that

Tulipsandaffodils · 20/02/2025 09:09

I think there are proven health benefits to red wine, so a glass a night can be good for you, my grandfather did it, and lived to his 90s. He would have a small glass of red wine with either lunch or his evening meal.

FeelinTwentySixPointTwo · 20/02/2025 09:18

It's not "completely fine and normal" to drink every day, no. Though lots of people on here would like to tell themselves that, as it's a very middle-class thing and thus socially more acceptable than cracking open a can of beer or a bottle of cider.

That said, it's not really indicative of an alcohol problem if you can happily go without it, so crack on if you enjoy it. There are far worse things you could be doing to your health.

It is though. It really is. It's totally normal to millions upon millions of people to have a glass of wine every single night with dinner. It's completely and utterly fine and normal.

But it is. And in many countries round the world. There is also very unlikely to be any harm with this, and it is silly to make it a class issue.

The French do it 👨🏼‍🎨

It's been normalised by many, although it's not normal to me either.

Not sure the French are the best example tbh.

It's common and normal in Italy too. And Spain. And Portugal. And Greece.....

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 20/02/2025 09:35

I think it's fine.

Winston Churchill famously drank 2 bottles of champagne a day as well as whisky with his breakfast and cognac at night. He also smoked several cigars a day. I'm sure his premature death at the age of 90 can be attributed to this unhealthy lifestyle.

StarStay · 20/02/2025 09:36

I mean, it's not ideal no, but not the end of the world. There are worse things you could be doing. I'm sure you know that already though, Is there a reason why you're asking OP?

I'm not sure why it's being completely normalised on this thread. None of my family drink alcohol every night (and half of them are Spanish...not sure where the assumption has come from that they all do it), none of my ex boyfriends have ever, none of my friends I'm very close to who come round often do it. Most people don't do this. Although I'm sure it's not massively "uncommon". It's just not necessarily "normal" and I don't think we should be saying it is.

why?

butterdish93 · 20/02/2025 09:39

Not for me! 2 bottles a week is a lot. Must be big glasses.

I don’t think common means it applies to everyone and specifically you?

Tell that to the French!
