A glass of wine every night?

grizeldagreen · 20/02/2025 08:39

I've fallen into a habit of doing this pretty much every night. Just the one glass while cooking. I can make a bottle last over 4 nights doing this. So over a week it would be just less than two bottles. Does this sound ok from a consumption point of view?

To add I usually have a glass, eat my evening meal then have a cup of tea before bed! So it's not exactly a wild life. But I just find that a small glass of white wine adds something to my evening.

Remember this is mumsnet where more than a thimble of sherry at Christmas means you are an alcoholic.

pizzaHeart · 20/02/2025 09:39

why?

Excessive drinking is known to be an issue in France. There's lots of data out there.

Yes attitudes do seem extreme here compared to what I see in real life.

But I guess a lot of people on here are tee total or very low level drinkers so what I'm having probably does seem a lot to them.

Remember you just made that up.
In reality we've normalised excessive alcohol consumption.

Oh cmon, France is no worse than other eu countries. Accusing like that isn’t ok.

Tulipsandaffodils · 20/02/2025 09:57

In fact it is very common to drink a glass of wine with meals in many countries including Italy, which has a low level of alsohol abuse.

I was replying to a comment where France was mentioned specifically, hence the Francocentric replies.

AmeliaTangfastic · 20/02/2025 09:59

Ideally you're meant to have some days off every week, but honestly? Think you're within guidelines for alcohol assuming they're not big glasses of wine.

I don't drink that often, but when. I do I tend to have two or three. I don't think that's any better tbh and that's why I don't drink at home unless entertaining.

DataColour · 20/02/2025 10:02

I have a small glass of red most nights. I think it's fine, but sometimes I do feel bad about it. Occasionally I'd have more and have a couple of large glasses if I'm out or entertaining at home, but then I won't have my daily small glass of wine the next day, as I feel like I don't need it as I had "too much" the night before. It's the kids related stress for me mainly, just a small glass of wine takes the edge off and relaxes me. When I don't have this stress, like when the kids are away, I don't need it at all. I don't drink at all if I'm on my own, so I'm not too worried about being addicted to alcohol.

BigDahliaFan · 20/02/2025 10:02

Wouldn't bother me overly. Glass of wine with food. I don't generally do it in the week because I feel better if I haven't had any alcohol and I'm also rather inclined to have a large glass and then sit on the sofa and contemplate another once I've had one and I'm trying to lose a stone. But I don't think you are on some slippery unhealthy slope.

Oh dear! 😆My mum and dad always had a small sherry before dinner every night for decades. Occasionally they'd ring the changes with a small Baileys.

They enjoyed it and rarely drank wine unless it was an occasion, birthday, Christmas etc.

They seemed to thrive on it.

They must have no taste.

I wouldn't drink French wine as a gift, it's like paint stripper. 🙄

ClareBlue · 20/02/2025 10:08

It's only ok if you live in a warm family orientated Country where we look in envy at the healthy Mediterranean diet. In cold Britain where we hate children and never have family meals it's an indication you are an alcoholic. So either move to Italy or bin the wine, the choice is yours.

InMyMNEra · 20/02/2025 10:09

I think this is actually the recommended weekly allowance in America, one glass a day? I always thought we should have one or 2 nights off, but I guess the liver doesn’t need a break from only processing one glass?

My worry would be (for myself) that it’s a slippery slope, and one glass wouldn’t be enough. But I’d imagine it’s fine if you are more disciplined than that

The French do it 👨🏼‍🎨

Not every night. Weekends, special meals, when friends are over - but not every night with the evening meal

Yes, but so is being sedentary, being fat, eating upf’s so many things cause cancer.

id bet good money some posters taking issue with this are overweight, or sitting on their sofas. And actually running a bigger risk, whilst preaching to the op.

MyUmberSeal · 20/02/2025 10:16

A glass of wine a night is perfectly normal, and also extremely civilised. Cheers.

PoppyBaxter · 20/02/2025 10:18

Absolutely fine.

What would the French do?!

I tend to have a glass of white or rose on a Thurs, Friday and Saturday. But I'm thinking of switching it out for red for the health benefits.

JacquesHarlow · 20/02/2025 10:30

Alcohol increase the risk of cancer.

The majority of people on here will shout me down in denial, and spout completely spurious sources to claim otherwise, but it does.

The reality is, a lot of people on Mumsnet love "the wine" and consider it a kind of necessary part of modern day living, a daily "treat" because of everything they have had to put up with that day, or however they perceive their lives.

LatteLady · 20/02/2025 10:33

I have a G&T every evening at 6:30pm, I am not an alcoholic, I just enjoy a glass to end my working day and start my evening. So no, @grizeldagreen you are not on a slippery slope.

Well it’s better to be informed and then you can decide if you think it’s a good idea which is what the op was asking. Many people are unaware of the link - I myself found this information enlightening. This thread is about alcohol, not obesity, inactivity, poor diet, etc.

Oh yeah thanks for that @Tulipsandaffodils . I have stated many times on other threads that I am an amateur sportsperson who has been running all my life.

Why do people do this on Mumsnet though?

Try and discredit the person posting, by claiming they are not in a position to post themselves due to their own issues?

I am not holier than thou, but I am sick of seeing people post things such as "size 14 is small", or "you can drink a couple of glasses a day and you'll be fine" , just because the goalposts have moved for you.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 20/02/2025 10:46

DazedDragon · 20/02/2025 08:42

I do this but a glass at 9pm. Just one.

I'm actually trying to break the habit as I don't find it a healthy one!

well, that IS just a habit, if it's not as part of your evening meal/to complement the food. I would think you'd end up going to bed a bit dehydrated, and that it would affect the quality of your sleep.

I used to be like OP, I always did just like a glass of wine with my food of a night and could easily leave the rest in the bottle. But as I went through perimenopause, I think my body definitely found it harder to process, as that one glass started to make me feel worse and worse, so that now I sometimes don't even feel like any, even if DH has bought a bottle and opened it for himself. We don't usually order a bottle in a restaurant if it's just the 2 of us as I'm happy with just a large glass drunk slowly and he is happy to stick to beer rather than order wine by the glass.

I never ever would have imagined us being like this if you'd asked me 10 years ago! I just assumed that older women who didn't drink much had always not drunk much. Now I think that a lot of them literally just don't have the urge to drink any alcohol once their hormones start changing.

It's common and normal in Italy too. And Spain. And Portugal. And Greece.....

Is it though? Or is that just the accepted thought, rather than the reality? Do your European friends or relatives ALL have a daily glass of wine in their families, on a normal week night? Every day? Even now? Or is this a vastly outdated concept?

In my experience, your assertion has nothing to do with reality these days.
