Phone/devices on train - without headphones

rosemarble · 19/02/2025 22:59

I don't know why the sound from a phone or other device when someone's watching YouTube or films drives me batty.
I'm on a fairly busy train, trying to read. People are talking and laughing and I can tune that out, but I can't tune out the device noise. It doesn't bother DS at all. Is it just cos I didn't grow up with it? Maybe I am harbouring feelings that it's antisocial to force your own entertainment on others?

The Eurostar asks people to wear headphones so I don't think it's just me being uptight.

Have a man on the same ward as me when I'm having chemo.

He thinks it's acceptable to call every member of his family on loudspeaker, while holding the phone up in the air so that everyone is disturbed.

He chats about the must mundane shit over and over then proceeds to call the same family members multiple times regarding the same issues. We are all pretty exhausted and wiped out and desperate for peace.

I had enough at one appointment and asked him if he had any headphones to use as I was desperately needing to rest and he was making me more ill with the constant chatting. He pretended he couldn't speak English so couldn't understand me! Wtf. I have literally sat there week after week listening to his shit chat (in English).

I told him he was just rude and asked to move away. Not been near him since thankfully however I still hear his calls down the hallway. Ignorant prick.

Hopi no your chemo goes well and you're free soon of having to endure such rude selfish behaviour Flowers

Hoping (sorry bad typing)

This week I was on a bus ride that, at one point, had THREE DIFFERENT PEOPLE using their phones on loudspeaker!!! I honestly wanted to stand up and say "are you all fucking serious" but no one else seemed too bothered so I just sat there and seethed like a coward.

Holly184 · 20/02/2025 00:29

Its so rude . I do anything to avoid confrontation but i do consider sitting next to these people and doing the same thing to see if they take the hint !

WheresThe · 20/02/2025 00:33

Trains should have Noisy Carriages for these people. They can all sit together if they think it's okay !!

JorgyPorgy · 20/02/2025 02:46

I agree but I think there needs to be a broader reeducation of manners and where public transport is concerned, signs up to remind people of what constitutes disrespect to other passengers and for people to notify train staff / bus driver or even transport police if there are people behaving anti socially (unnecessary noise, shoes on seats etc)

Can we all start some sort of campaign against this?

Most definitely. There should be on the spot fines. I'm not even joking.
If I'm flicking through YouTube shorts in a public place I put the sound on mute, because that's what the subtitles are for!

jellyfishperiwinkle · 20/02/2025 02:59

It seems weird to me when headphones are so easily and cheaply available. I know some kids may have sensory issues with headphones but that surely doesn't apply to every random idiot playing sound out loud.

The worst thing the other day though (when I forgot my headphones) was someone slurping a drink in front of me, then crunching the ice with their mouth open. The little kid watching a TV programme with no headphones seemed pretty minor compared with that.

sensory issues does not mean other people have to put up with the noise, devices can be sued in private then
not saying you are saying any different but noise does not sound quieter because people need noise it is still loud regardless

It’s incredibly anti-social and rude. I’ve challenged people a couple of times with mixed success, but it’s so annoying. I’m in Japan at the moment and they have announcements saying for phones to be on silent and I’m enjoying taking the metro without even the suggestion that anyone would listen to music without headphones. We don’t have to accept this behaviour.

Maybe we start playing some death metal in their ear to drown out whatever they’re listening to.
one the other day was playing some stupid loud pinging game on her phone, constant pinging. So rude

Believe me, I’m going to be so depressed on my tube journey home in comparison 😂

ARichtGoodDram · 20/02/2025 03:47

People are so inconsiderate now.

I was on a train last week and three, very loud, business guys were having a group call, on speaker phone, on the train. They even had the cheek to ask a woman to shush her toddler who was periodically getting excited at a sheep or cow (and it was literally every now and again - not constant) and they'd picked the table opposite the toddler (unreserved carriage).

The ticket person/train guard woman was a lady with a broad Scottish accent who shouted "this is a train, not a boardroom gentlemen, headphones for the consideration of others please..."

Nobody said anything, but you could definitely feel the sniggers of laughter at their telling off 😂

MinnieMountain · 20/02/2025 06:27

I’ve given up booking in the quiet carriage. It never is now.

SpringCabbage · 20/02/2025 06:39

Totally agree OP.

It’s so weird to me that people are so completely oblivious none wants to listen to your conversation, music whatever.

But it’s also worse than that, it’s really over-stimulating to be constantly surrounded by ‘tinny’ noise.

LavenderBlue19 · 20/02/2025 06:45

I ask people to turn it down, so long as they don't look dangerous. It's so incredibly anti-social, we can't let it become the norm.

I asked a young teen to turn it down the other day and then realised he was sat next to his mum 🤦 To his credit, he quickly and apologetically turned the sound off. She glared at me.

RhaenysRocks · 20/02/2025 06:48

This thread comes up a lot and it's one of those ones where basically everyone agrees it's awful with pretty much no excuse bar a child with SN who can't tolerate headphones but that's pretty rare and certainly doesn't account for the vast majority...yet we all experience it constantly so where are the people who do it? Id really love to hear someone say well I do it because X.

My little win on this was a few months ago, busy train and this guy came and manspread next to me then put the football on his phone, with sound. I tried slightly scowling a couple of times but he didn't take the hint so I started reading my book aloud. He gave me a look like I was crazy so I said "I thought we were sharing" and he moved. I was quite proud of that one. I'm getting waaay bolshier about this shit lately.

HiyaLuv · 20/02/2025 07:03

@RhaenysRocks that's fantastic! Well done you!

aramox1 · 20/02/2025 07:07

In hospital. Constantly there's someone with their tv or ipad blaring on. Hospitals even provide headphones!

Fountofwisdom · 20/02/2025 07:17

It’s so selfish and is done as a deliberate provocation imo. Sometimes train guards will challenge it, but I’ve also seen them ignore it as they pass through the train. I was in the ‘quiet carriage’ of a train recently where a man in his 40s nearby was watching a noisy programme on his phone. I politely asked him whether he had earbuds, to which he cheekily replied, “no, do you have some for me?”. I pointed out it was the quiet carriage and he made a big show of packing up to move to another carriage, but stared at me and said something like “you will die” as he went past. He had a Middle Eastern accent, so I didn’t quite catch the words but it was clearly meant to be intimidating. Very unpleasant and made me anxious for the rest of the journey.

PrimitivePerson · 20/02/2025 07:26

Unfortunately I've been threatened for asking people to turn phones down.

ChopstickNovice · 20/02/2025 07:28

Have one train carriage labelled "sit in here if you play videos/take calls without headphones."

I mean it would be impossible to enforce but it's the dream... Make them all be stuck with each other!

Some people are lacking in self awareness peasants.
