Are school likely to let me take my child out of school an hour early on the last day of half term?

Likely to be a problem? I'm trying to book flights but the school isn't open to ask them... Has anyone any experience of this?

Say you have a dental appointment

littleluncheon · 19/02/2025 22:07

You child will probably have a temperature that day.

JanaJ1988 · 19/02/2025 22:08

Yes, of course you can! You are their parent. A school is not going to hold children against a parental request.

Don't lie either, awful model for your DC’s.

Farreleye · 19/02/2025 22:08

If its after afternoon registration they probably won't care.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 19/02/2025 22:08

School probably won’t mind as your dc will have got their afternoon attendance mark but if you’re worried, for an hour I’d lie and say you’ve got a long awaited appt that can’t be rearranged.

Lovelysummerdays · 19/02/2025 22:09

Why would it be a problem? Just email I need to pick up dc early today. No big deal. What on earth do you imagine they will do?

Wolfiefan · 19/02/2025 22:09

You don’t lie. You fill in a form for a holiday. It’s not authorised. You take them anyway.

MellowTiger · 19/02/2025 22:09

I agree - don’t lie, just tell them it’s unavoidable.

Rickrolypoly · 19/02/2025 22:09

It's school not jail. Why would it be a problem?

SoftPillow · 19/02/2025 22:09

Don’t you have an urgent appointment? Or, perhaps your child is feeling unwell that day?

I wouldn’t worry about it and would book the flight.

Which is true…otherwise the parent will have gone on holiday, leaving the child behind….😉😆😂. School will be really stuck then…😂 ( and I work in education)

Bushmillsbabe · 19/02/2025 22:10

I doubt they would have an issue with this, it won't affect attendance. I take mine out regularly an hour early for hospital appointments, the last one is 3.30 so have to collect at 2.30. I don't ask for permission, I just email to say 'I need collect X at 2.30 next Wednesday please as they have a medical appointment.

colinthedogfromaccounts · 19/02/2025 22:11

This is your child. You can make the decision unilaterally. The school cannot detain your child against your will. It's a school, not a prison.

Note to teacher cc admin. Dear X, I will be collecting my child at x time on x date. Please can you send them to the office at this time, so I can sign them out.

Thank you

I'm worried about a fine as his dad is abusive and it goes to both parents. He would hit the roof.

Don't lie. Kids always drop the parents in it!

If you are collecting after afternoon registration (even if it is 5 minutes afterwards), school won't care. To be fair, if their attendance is normally OK, they won't care anyway.

Glorybox2025 · 19/02/2025 22:22

You can't be fined for an hour! It needs to be 5 days before they can fine you. Chill.

dizzydizzydizzy · 19/02/2025 22:28

All they care about is that they are there for registration. The school will be totally happy for you to collect your child after afternoon registration.

BlueSilverCats · 19/02/2025 22:37

Fine for what? If it's after the afternoon registration, he will be marked as there. No absences. Even if they're odd and do afternoon registration right before home time, that would still be only one missed session, nowhere near the threshold for a fine.

MumblesParty · 19/02/2025 22:37

I assume you mean the last day of term before the next holiday? I would just tell school you booked a late afternoon flight and the times got changed by the airline. This happens all the time, pretty much every time I fly.

You won’t get a fine for a day or an hour!!

Solongfairwelll · 19/02/2025 22:39

I work in a school, don't lie, we won't mind at all. Your child will be registered for the afternoon so it makes zero difference your child's attendance. I usually have about 3 kids a day leave early for various reasons and if any of those reasons are for something nice we say to have a lovely time and that's it.

Lotsalotsagiggles · 19/02/2025 22:44

They are registered again after lunch and as long as leave after that nothing is marked - my sons teacher said after lunch is fine as office wouldnt mark it

AuntieDolly · 19/02/2025 22:44

Don't they finish early on the last day of term anyway? So many children have dentist appointments on the last day of term the waiting rooms must be fit to burst

ThatsNotMyTeen · 19/02/2025 22:45

Why do you need them to let you? Just tell them you’re getting your child early that day

Is that something recent, mass exodus with blatant lies hasn't been a thing at any time at my children schools

The teachers at your children's school must think the parents are all stupid to think anyone believes that
