Christmas in the USA

My apologies. I'm purely posting here for traffic. My sister has cancer, she's 37, three young children. When we were growing up we always watched Christmas movies, the cheesy type. She wants to spend Christmas in the US and stay in a house like we see in the films. Snow, open fire, christmassy town. I don't know where to start but I want to make it happen.

Well north or north east so you get some snow, the north east is lovely, Massachusetts, Maine, up state NY.

steff13 · 18/02/2025 19:01

Vermont might be a good choice.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 18/02/2025 19:01

Without wanting to put a downer on it make sure you can get insurance - especially going to the US. It could be quite difficult if it's ongoing.

Cctviswatchingme001 · 18/02/2025 19:04

She has mentioned Wyoming or Utah as she is an avid horsewoman but I'm thinking they might be too remote to visit. Good chance of snow though..

it is going to be difficult to get health insurance, so start there

if you want to guarantee snow at Christmas you will need to go to Western US as the East Coast doesn't always have snow on the ground at Christmas.

Utah and Wyoming are really beautiful.

Please research travel insurance before you do anything else - it's very expensive if you have cancer and the US is the most expensive place to insure for. And please do not contemplate going without, if she needs anything while there it will literally bankrupt you.

Cctviswatchingme001 · 18/02/2025 19:09

We have health insurance. Otherwise would not contemplate such a trip.

Specifically insurance that will cover her pre existing condition of cancer? The insurance companies will try to wriggle out of any loophole so please make sure. I know loads of people with cancer (don't ask) and some people on curative treatment can't even get cover to go to Spain let alone the US.

Cctviswatchingme001 · 18/02/2025 19:14

@steff13, fabulous. Thank-you.

Health insurance or travel insurance? It needs to cover things like flying medical staff out to bring her home if needed - not just medical bills.

Cctviswatchingme001 · 18/02/2025 19:17

@Nameychangington thank you. My sister is currently receiving treatment. We have a water tight insurance policy.

I always dreamed of Christmas in new York, op! But it might be a bit hectic with all she's dealing with ❤️

BurtsB33 · 18/02/2025 19:18

Maine and Vermont are lovely and a bit nearer

Cctviswatchingme001 · 18/02/2025 19:19

@mumofoneAlonebutokay . We have spent Christmas in New York before but she's looking for the Christmas movie experience.

You will need to keep the travel/health insurance up to date,I would imagine on her condition.

You probably will need to look into comfort on flights so will you be able to afford first class/Business.

I would look at direct flights with super short transfers but to be honest while I think it is a lovely idea I don't think it is practical.

Cctviswatchingme001 · 18/02/2025 19:20

@BurtsB33 a couple of people have said Maine and Vermont so will check them out. Thank you.

@purplecorkheart. I understand your concern. Money is jot an issue. We are hoping she will be in remission by the time we go.

Cctviswatchingme001 · 18/02/2025 19:22

Not

SeaToSki · 18/02/2025 19:23

if you def want Easter Coast and not West coast, then look at Woodstock Vermont and Camden Maine. Aim to fly into Boston Logan and rent a car with 4 wheel drive (winter weather) look at Airbnb and Vrbo

Cctviswatchingme001 · 18/02/2025 19:25

@SeaToSki thank-you.

Unless you are a multi millionaire money will be an issue. Remission will not mean anything to travel Insurance/Heath Insurance in USA. I speak from experience and honestly do not want to see another family go through what I have witnessed with a very close friend.

BurtsB33 · 18/02/2025 19:31

Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard are lovely too and you’d have the sea, ditto Maine which is truly gorgeous. Long drive from airport potentially but scenic. Vermont is v pretty and you’d get a good chance of snow surely. I’ve always fancied Michigan.

EricTheGardener · 18/02/2025 19:33

If money's not that much of an issue and she really wants to go to Wyoming then maybe look at house rentals in Jackson Hole. You'd need to get to an airport like Chicago or Denver and then get a connecting flight, but it would be worth it. It's so incredibly stunning and you're pretty much guaranteed snow at Christmas time. Lots of vacation rental companies, for eg:
