Is anyone else just stuck in debt and fed up?

I am actually owed a refund of £1500 from something which will be wonderful, but it's just a waiting game and could be another 2 months yet, however I know I will be getting it.

I'm not the worst with money but I'm not the best either. Every month before my wage comes in I calculate everything that's going out that month, and what ill have left.

I live alone. To give a rundown:
Mortgage- £440, boiler cover- £31.50, gas- £35, electric- £35, water not yet been billed as moved in last few months, ongoing orthodontic treatment- £54, petplan and insurance- £43, phone contract and handset- £32, gym- £14, YouTube/netflix- £22, wifi- £24, £300 on clearing debt atm across x2 credit cards and one loan.
Student loan- £30, then it's food, public transport etc.

I know i could cancel the gym but it's working out at around £3.50 a week and benefits me hugely. I don't have any Sky or anything like that and only have netflix so watch a lot of films etc on it.

If anyone sees any areas I could cut back on I'd be willing to take suggestions..I paid £300 alone on my credit card this month but then had an unexpected £190 repair bill.
It's living alone with a mortgage which is stressful as you have to plan for these unexpected emergencies.

I don't get expensive clothes, make up, hair etc. Everything is as cheap as I can make it.
I'm changing jobs next week and will be on 28k base salary and have got an evening job which will be £300 extra a month.
I don't drive, mainly use public transport but occasionally take an Uber, as waiting outside in blistering wind and rain is depressing a lot of the time.
I don't buy expensive food either, do what I can in terms of cheap or free hobbies. Used to do a dance class but now I just do one on YouTube. Will restart running once it warms up next week.

Having read your posts I think getting an additional job (which you are doing) is the most sensible solution. You can throw the additional earnings at the debt and once you are debt free things will feel a fair bit easier and you will start to build up a cushion.

You seem to have a lot to be grateful for. Instead of focusing on what you 'don't have' focus on what you DO have. A job, income that helps you pay for the roof over your head, your animals. You are paying off debts, well done! This will pass. I've been there, single, mortgage, after bills I had £10/month for clothes/shoes etc. When shoes were £30+/pair. I worked a 9-5 job, an evening job and got a weekend job. It does get better.

I thought it was for some reason! Shows I've never owned a home before. Going to try and get out of it.

I wouldn't do that. Boiler cover is worth it for an old boiler BG are obligated to keep it going. A boiler's lifespan is 10-15yrs these days, anyone who says different doesn't know what they're talking about. I've had to replace 3 that were that age. Some might last longer but that's pure luck and I understand it's £2k to replace on average now. So unless you have £2k spare it's a big risk.

I got insurance for my cat following a friend's experience. Her cat had hyperthyroidism and needed dental treatment and everything combined including blood tests etc. Would work out a couple of grand over the year.

Maybe I should cancel the boiler cover if it's not too late? It's with British gas

Your be better off putting the money in a savings account each month just incase rather than paying insurance what if you don’t ever need to claim on it just waste of money !!

My cat is 7, the insurance is 15 and then I'm with 'pet health club ' with my vets which covers all consultations, flea and worm treatment, vacconations, claw trimming and so on.
Ill have a proper look into it..

Do not cancel with PetPlan to go somewhere cheap. They won't pay out and will consider most tests and some treatment unnecessary. PetPlan via direct claim through your vet will always pay. You may as well cancel than get supermarket insurance.

Of course it’s not a waste of money. It would take someone years and years to save £12k ish which insurance would pay out for someone paying £25-40 a month. I really hate it when I see “advice” like this because it really doesn’t make sense! People just don’t understand how expensive vets bills can be.

TheDefiant · 25/02/2025 18:05

@lauralou91 I would have to save the starting insurance rate for my cat every month for 50 (yes fifty!) years to cover what we've claimed back so far.

And I've underestimated the bills (one at over £4,500 and one at over £1,500).

lauralou91 · 25/02/2025 19:07

You can actually pay big vet bills off per month aswell in my vets anyway if needs be it’s just pot luck really my jack Russell died a couple of weeks ago he was 16 and never had a issue that’s the reason I’m saying it somif I paid insurance for all that time i would of never claimed would of be better for me to save it every month that’s all
