To Think The Daily Mail Cannot Stoop Much Lower

Article in the DM this afternoon 'How to Profit from War'.
It is in the M+ section but the synopsis suggests it is advising readers how to invest money in arms companies in the light of the Russia/Ukraine situation and countries in Europe arming themselves.
The DM is a war-mongering, divisive, fear-raking, capitalist, shameless piece of shit.

I think most people reading Daily Mail absolutely detest war and violence but are pragmatic enough to understand that if your enemies are investing in weapons then it's probably good to do the same to have some deterrent.

I agree with you there's no reason the pp has that right.

The title of the DM article is not 'Here's How You Could Support European Armed Forces Preparing to Defend Their Countries Against Russia' though, it is

'How to Profit From War'.

It's morally repugnant. I can't understand anyone finding it any other. I am astonished at anyone defending it.

Anyone who watches the business and finance channel, Bloomberg tv would already have come to the same conclusion as the DM article writer. Investors only need to decide which country's defence stocks to buy.

Yesterday, UK defence stocks increased in value by £4bn in advance of the Ukraine peace talks. I am sure that many pension funds are already actively invested in that sector, as well as technology that has military capability.

I understand that.
It's the DM and their first response, outside of scare-mongering and war-mongering is an article titled 'How to Make Money Out of War'.

The companies make billions from arms dealing - so let's not pretend buying shares helps soldiers by helping the companies- they are amongst our most successful industries.

I'm surprised anyone didn't release war and the military in general are a very profitable business. Arms manufacturers don't craft precision technology for killing purely out of the goodness of their hearts, like any business the aim to is make as much money as possible.

It's not really immoral either. Better for a UK based company to make a killing selling their weapons for a foreign war than all the money going to Russian manufacturers, surely? At least the money helps the UK economy and gets our exports up.

The choice isn't between "good" countries making weapons and nobody making weapons, it's between "good" countries making them and "bad" countries making them.

The purpose of the DM is not moral guidance but to sell newspapers/subscriptions, hence the click bait headline while also providing useful information/advice to their readers. I would therefore say that their response here is in line with their business objectives, so not unexpected, and certainly not worth getting worked up about.

Ah- you're a Tory!

Great argument, very eloquent.
The Mail is generally unpleasant, its hardly news and that link is behind a paywall anyway.
As for can they sink lower? I am sure they can and will

Cupcakes2035 · 18/02/2025 11:33

then there was the nic cage film lord of war

Read the post- I read the synopsis. I wouldn't pat the DM a penny

So why even go to the site if that's what you think of it. I don't like football so I ignore anything to do with it, news articles, pubs showing live matches etc, which is a lot harder to do than you not clicking on a DM article.

Surely upping our ability to defend ourselves from within is good in various way, including job creation and stimulating the economy.

Of course it’s good and makes total sense. Unfortunately it’s being twisted on this thread to make it all about arms dealing by some posters who just want to have a dig at the right wing press.
