To Think The Daily Mail Cannot Stoop Much Lower

Article in the DM this afternoon 'How to Profit from War'.
It is in the M+ section but the synopsis suggests it is advising readers how to invest money in arms companies in the light of the Russia/Ukraine situation and countries in Europe arming themselves.
The DM is a war-mongering, divisive, fear-raking, capitalist, shameless piece of shit.

Ah- you're a Tory!

Pathetic

Sausagenbacon · 18/02/2025 08:05

I don't read the dm, but I do know that it has covered stories that other, more saintly, outlets (like the Guardian and the bbc) won't touch.
A friend of mine was the whistle blower on the scandal of misuse of money in Foreign Aid. Literally no other media outlet would run with the story. But the DM did.
Also, Gender issues. It's only Right Wing outlets like the DM that report it accurately.

EasternStandard · 18/02/2025 08:11

Ah- you're a Tory!

This is such a knee jerk response on here it doesn't even fit with the post you're using it for

INeedAnotherName · 18/02/2025 00:47

If it's in the M+ section you need to sign up to read it (which i refuse to do). I guess you have signed up 😬

Read the post- I read the synopsis. I wouldn't pat the DM a penny

Does that excuse it with this headline /article?

If you're on Safari you can read the paywalled articles by clicking the Show Reader icon on the left of the URL bar.

I never knew that! Does it work for other paywalls?

Oh of course! Not just "accidentally" reading the Mail but bloody well PAID to do so!!

What a plonker!😂

Read the post - I said it's in the paid bit but I read the synopsis- the bit they show you unpaid.

I stated simple facts without giving any opinion.
How did you infer my opinion on the issue in order to decide I need to "wake up and smell the coffee" or was that a general comment not aimed at me specifically?

How can the purpose of bringing up arms dealers in a thread about investing in the armed forces be anything other than an attempt to put a negative spin on an article just because it was in the DM? In fact this whole thread is just an anti-dm, anti capitalist rant.

Kendodd · 18/02/2025 08:19

You forget OP, this article for for DM readers. Plenty of them will be rubbing their hands in glee thinking about the money they might make from a good old war.

hattie43 · 18/02/2025 08:20

So why are you even reading the synopsis if you hate the paper . To make yourself appear more interesting or do you just trawl through looking for something to feign your leftist indignation .

Because they don’t have anything better to do.

Absolutely . As with anyone who invests money via their pension , isa etc or do you all have ethical investment only stamped across happy if you don't earn much but at least you can baulk in the milk of human kindness over your white bread and beans supper .

Quite easily really. It's just facts. You decided the spin.

Ponoka7 · 18/02/2025 08:27

What do you think the whole Ukraine thing has been about for Zelensky? Those at the top, profit, in a way it's giving everyone a chance. As said, all of us do ok out of the various conflicts, pension etc investments, reducing populations, destroying the environment which makes people desperate. Come the £1 Easter eggs in the shops, no-one asks how we get such a labour intense product for that price.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 18/02/2025 08:27

I work near the excel centre in East London, there is the most massive arms fair there every year. Its almost entirely British companies and our armed forces, I know because their workers are on the DLR with me. There are protests some of which the police take very seriously most years.
So anyone worried about the British Arms industry needed be. I read in the guardian that Britain has a thriving arms industry and sells to anyone no matter how evil. I hope we stopped selling to the Russians after 2014 but who knows.
And I grew up reading the Daily Mail because my mother was very unpleasant and enjoyed it. Didn't the press Baron who founded it said he was giving little people their daily hate? Just because something is popular doesn't make it right!

Ddakji · 18/02/2025 08:29

Surely upping our ability to defend ourselves from within is good in various way, including job creation and stimulating the economy.

Slimbear · 18/02/2025 08:36

Well if it wasn’t U.K. arms being sold it would be US or Chinese or whoever.
its like banning oil platforms in the North Sea -then shipping g it from Saudi which is less environmentally friendly/and much harder on their immigrant oil workers.
. I bet most posters on this thread have never bought a share .

Agree. You have to pay for the M+, and why would you , if you don’t share similar views?

I think most people reading Daily Mail absolutely detest war and violence but are pragmatic enough to understand that if your enemies are investing in weapons then it's probably good to do the same to have some deterrent.

For some paywalls, not all. You can also search https://archive.md to see if someone has already archived the link. DM links are usually archived, I suspect someone automates it deliberately.

For other paywalls there are some tricks you can do with javascript, and for some you can delve into the source code to dig out the text.

Publications I really respect, like The Economist, I subscribe to. But I can't bring myself to subscribe to the Daily Mail ;)
