To be shocked watching back kids movies from my childhood with DD

DD is 6 and we watch quite a few films together, mixture of old and new. Last Halloween I was so excited to watch a film from my childhood, decided against hocus pocus but went with Casper. Well, turns out not once but TWICE Eric idle's character shouts BITCH at Carrigan. (She's is tbf but a bit much for a Pg film).

Just sat down to watch Charlie and the chocolate factory (from 2005!) and mike teevee says 'even a retard could figure it out'. What the hell!

Any other corkers you've come across watching back your childhood films?

So much misogyny in 80s films. I am a fan of the late great Bill Paxton, but hearing him speaking the line 'is this bitch on the rag?' about a woman during a rewatch of Predator 2 recently was too much for me.

There was a serious lack of strong female lead characters back in 80s. Which is why I love the first Captain Marvel movie, and why it got such a lot of hate from men.

Don't even get me started on the Police Academy films ... times have definately changed for the better!

I hate it because of the level of rage I feel when Frank shouts at Kevin and then Kate’s absolutely shocking parenting of shoving him in the loft. I get so angry about it I can’t watch the rest of the film!

I don't know id you've seen encanto but the grandmother in that is so horrible to Mirabel it makes it hard for me to watch

Why shocking though? Curry is the Indian national dish! I wouldn't be offended if I was a waitress and someone non-British said similar to me, but said roast beef, or fish and chips, instead of curry. What mild things shock some people!

Where did you get that idea from? It's not the name of a dish anyone uses in India at all!

Back on topic:
Watership down was terrifying when I was young. And I have a memory of being so upset by Pinnochio as a toddler that we had to leave the cinema!

But by the time When the Wind Blows came out, we'd already read all of Raymon Briggs' books, and knew what to expect. And even saw the stage version of it at the theatre one time.

There was a lot of other problematic TV in the 1970s & 80s - think most children were expose to things like Benny Hill, James Bond, and of course the Carry On films.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 17/02/2025 21:28

@MumCanIHaveASnackPlease I'm still not convinced she didn't leave him accidentally on purpose. Peter's reaction when he realises they've left him has always irritated me, talk about passive and underwhelmed.

That's why I can't watch Lady and the Tramp. The humans are so mean to Tramp and when they kick him out in the rain after the baby arrives= 😭

Is this a joke? What's wrong with the word turd?

I don't like it either @gollyimholly and wouldn't like my kids using that word.

I rewatched Home Alone last year and frankly found myself shocked and wincing at the amount of violence inflicted on the wet bandits 😂

Did you watch that programme where they recreated them and said what would have really happened?

Bleachbum · 17/02/2025 21:41

BreezyScroller · 17/02/2025 18:54

We all survived, and no one was shocked or traumatised.

We've gone way too far and treat all the kids like babies until they are 18.

💯

I went to the cinema a few months ago with my 14, nearly 15 year old boy to see the new Deadpool film without really thinking. We weren’t allowed in. It’s ridiculous. It’s a Marvel movie ffs. I’m sure my DS sees much more inappropriate things on Netflix and the internet. He was with his mum!

In 13 month he could join the army. But no, no, he mustn’t be exposed to a bit of fake blood or swearing 🙄.

TheChosenTwo · 17/02/2025 17:28

My youngest is now a teenager (13) and it’s a minefield sitting down to watch some of the old classics with him.
I went for a safe option the other night, trains planes and automobiles - all fine pretty much until Steve Martin goes off on a rampage and uses the word fucking about 20 times in a minute 😂
to be fair I don’t mind the odd bit of swearing in stuff and it was a 15 so my own fault!
But I do agree, and if anyone has any recommendations for any old classics to watch with nothing too hardcore I’m all ears.

Love that film!

I used the National Theatre "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with an S2/Y9 class.

PG, NT - so now worries, eh? The one time in my life I didn't check out the video beforehand.

Then Bottom took Titania from behind. I leapt at the machine in an attempt to switch it off - and accidentally hit the (VHS) fast forward, thereby making the movements look even more obscene.

Kids were still laughing about it when they bid me farewell at the end of 6th Year.

At least it was entertaining... our year 9 teacher showed us Polinski's Macbeth in class! Was awful!

When I watched Grease for the first time in about 30 years, I was horrified by the way they treated Eugene.

It's not a kids' film though?!

Justploddingonandon · 17/02/2025 17:30

I never understood why people thing Greese is a family show. Quite apart from the whole teenage pregnancy storyline, I hate the message it gives when Sandy basically totally changes herself to get the boy.

Exactly. Literally the whole thing is all about sex so I always wince when people let their little kids watch it. Just cos it has fun songs doesn't change the content!

I've rewatched a few 80s films lately.

Both Teenwolf and Bill and Ted's excellent adventure use the word fag as an insult

Back to the future. When Biff has Marty's mum in the back of the car and is sexually assaulting her!

Still great films though.

But fag is still an insult now, surely? Unless its now new teen lingo that's OK? ! Help!

Is this a joke? What's wrong with the word turd?

I actually shouted to my kids tonight “Who’s not flushed the turd in the downstairs loo?”. Didn’t realise it was a Bad Word?!

To be honest the woke sanitised dumbed down kids films of 2025 are more cringe than a bit of home alone violence. This thread is ridiculous

Your use of the word woke as an insult is ridiculous.

Saturday Night Fever hasn’t aged well either.

But there is a lot to forgive in that film.

I watched Snow White (the original animated Disney version) with my 3yo. How did I not remember the bit about the Queen requesting her heart in a box as evidence of her death or when she's cakling about Snow White being buried alive 🤔

That's... that's the story though? Because she's evil?

The mum was great in Schitt's Creek though. 😃

I just had to Google that - I never realised.

Fat shaming in the goonies? I forgot about that bit and the whole wierd kissing thing 😳

Flight of the navigator was a hit when the kids were younger for months my middle son used to say why are you leaking and find it hilarious (he was 3)

Don’t forget Mouth telling the Spanish housekeeper about the “sex dungeon” in Mikey’s parents basement 😱😱😱

cakeorwine · 17/02/2025 22:13

Has anyone mentioned Airplane yet?

There are so many things in that that could be discussed.

FantasiaTurquoise · 17/02/2025 22:14

I watched Grease over and over again in the early 90s and loved it. The teenage pregnancy plot went over my head when I was younger so I thought it would be ok to watch with my DD but it shattered all my childhood memories. Danny humiliates Sandy on their first re-meeting, then sabotages her sweet relationship with the sporty guy who clearly worships her, tries to touch her up at the drive in (ignoring her lack of consent) then sings a song about feeling sorry for himself after she storms off then finally dumps her publicly in the middle of the dance-off only to suddenly notice her again when she changes her appearance for him when all he has done is put on a cardigan. It wasn't quite the golden romance I'd remembered! Child-me also missed Vince Fontaine trying to slip something in Marty's drink at the dance-off and don't even get me started on greased lightnin!

I remember back in the day my 14 year old niece being outraged that her mum wouldn't let her go and see Bridget Jones' Diary because it had a 15 certificate in the UK whereas her younger cousin had seen it as it was a 7 certificate in Europe.

Grease prompted me to ask my mum what a virgin was when I was about 5

What’s wrong with that?
