To be shocked watching back kids movies from my childhood with DD

DD is 6 and we watch quite a few films together, mixture of old and new. Last Halloween I was so excited to watch a film from my childhood, decided against hocus pocus but went with Casper. Well, turns out not once but TWICE Eric idle's character shouts BITCH at Carrigan. (She's is tbf but a bit much for a Pg film).

Just sat down to watch Charlie and the chocolate factory (from 2005!) and mike teevee says 'even a retard could figure it out'. What the hell!

Any other corkers you've come across watching back your childhood films?

Grease prompted me to ask my mum what a virgin was when I was about 5

Oh my god I was 12 when that came out (age for 13+) and even back then it was very difficult to get into the cinema to see it. Not suitable for age 5 at all.

It was the 2005 version, so that's what surprised me. DD was talking and didn't notice, and I wouldn't stop her watching it again, it was just surprising

Tbf. 'Back in the day' retard WASN'T an insult, it was the correct term. Which then became used as an insult and we changed the terms we used.
I remember seeing an old touch of frost on repeat (David Jason police series) that would have been mid 90's, the MC referred to DS boy as retarded, the parents offendedly corrected him that the correct term was handicapped. My point is that at that time the series was made retarded was the previously correct but outmoded term. It wasn't always an insult.

Not a movie but me and my siblings loved WWE as children. Watching back now it's crazy the things they got away with!

When it was WWF?

I loved that era.

Got too old for wrestling before it became WWE so I only know it as WWF and I've since been told I stopped watching at the right time as it became very tame (PC) and uninteresting by comparison with fewer stars.

One of the very last episodes I saw also happened to generate the highest views (a record it still holds which I read about while reminiscing). It involved the Rock and Mick Foley then the hilarious 'rock n sock' connection. The Rock is one of the most charismatic entertainers I've ever seen. Freddie Mercury is the only other act I can think of who was as skilled on the mic in terms of owning a crowd. This is the skit from that episode: it's called "this is your life".

Mick throws the Rock a birthday party (it isn't his birthday) and various people from the rock's life (including his childhood girlfriend) come on to hilarious results. The beeps that appear in this for his swearing don't appear in the one I recorded at the time. It's prime Rock at his best when he became a global star.

That is one of my favourite movies scenes. DH and I often refer to cars as “4 fucking wheels and a seat”

Haha it was great, we were all laughing!
I hadn’t seen the film all the way through in years but I do love an old Steve Martin film.
Had just forgotten about his sweary Mary outburst 😂

I took my 11 year old to a special showing of Gremlins at Halloween and was horrified. The scene where the mum puts Gremlins in the blender, microwave etc was so much gentler in my hazy 1980s memory.

Last year, when the latest series of the new Magnum PI ended, we thought we'd watch some of the original series with the kids. I had no idea how much time Tom Selleck spent openly oggling women in bikinis coming in and out of the ocean and taking frankly an unnecessary amount of time washing the salt water off in the beach showers. Again, not part of my recollection of the series first time round, but by the end even my teenagers were like "what are we watching here?"

Don't ever let your children watch "Through the Dragon's Eye" - it was a "Look and Read" childrens programme pretty much every primary school child was forced to watch in the late 1980s / early 90s. I had nightmares for months about that. I've just found a few episodes on YouTube whilst writing this post and it still scares me!!!

What was it about story lines on Look and Read?! The Dark Tower was quite spooky, but The Boy From Space was creepy beyond belief. One (or more) of the scriptwriters clearly had a very dark sense of humour!

I was a bit shocked when I rematches Gremlins recently. The mother putting a gremlin in the microwave and other violence.

I think Gremlins is a 15 which I didn't remember when watching it with my 12 year old. But yes it is gruesome in parts.

We were at a family party over the weekend with lots of young children. Pets or Pets 2 was playing and they used the word "turd" in it which I was surprised with given it is a child's cartoon made only very recently.

yea, i forgot that part, the truffle shuffle

This episode of Wogan up in my feed the other day. It’s a disgraceful way to talk to a child but “chunk” is so charismatic and confident. He left acting and ended up a lawyer. Great kid!

Still not keen on revisiting the Goonies though.

What 😂

Sorry, it was an A. My brain was remembering me sneaking into an x cert film while visiting granny aged 14, but the film was actually Saturday Night Fever....

There's a bit in Octopussy where Bond gives an Indian man a tip and says "That'll keep you in curry for a few weeks." DH and I were so shocked we laughed!

Why shocking though? Curry is the Indian national dish! I wouldn't be offended if I was a waitress and someone non-British said similar to me, but said roast beef, or fish and chips, instead of curry. What mild things shock some people!

I put on Ace Ventura for my kids, and swiftly turned it off, forgot about the sex scenes and then all the trans stuff. Don't know what I was thinking 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️

A bit like me years ago with the Blues Brothers - loved the music. Totally forgot that the film itself was JUST NOT SUITABLE for a pre-tween!

Watched it as wwf and WWE. I was long time fan! Mick Foley was one of my favorites.

Did you watch the Mr. McMahon documentary on Netflix?

'Retarded' just means 'delayed', which is the acceptable term today.

Before Joe Pesci dies, I'd give absolutely anything for an 18-rated Home Alone sequel where the Wet Bandits have one more shot at Kevin, and he rigs that massive house up with a bunch of Saw-esque deathtraps.

Oh my goodness! That would be awesome!

NoseyFarkers · 17/02/2025 19:20

Try Watership Down op, you'll realise how tame your previous watches have been then 😂

*Still shudder at WSD, decades later. Anyone else?

Yes! And I've never even seen the full movie. The theme tune was No 1 for weeks when i was about six and the video was a collection of 'highlights' from the film. I found it so disturbing that I had to go and sit at the top of the stairs and put my fingers in my ears to block out the sad music and lugubrious lyrics - I just couldn't bear seeing those poor (cartoon) bunnies squashed on the road with their blood spilling everywhere.

That and Wizard of Oz.

Creeped out by both of them.

The wheelers and Zombi with her many heads. Loved it though.

I still have nightmares about the wheelers now! I can’t believe my parents let me watch it… or that it was a PG 😂

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 17/02/2025 21:07

@rashdecisi0n darkest of them all... Geordie Racer was about racing pigeons in Newcastle!

surreygirl1987 · 17/02/2025 21:09

There's a website called Commonsensemedia which tells you about movies before you show them to your kids. I've found it quite helpful. Some PG movies I feel are fine, but others are awful, so I like a heads up and this website is pretty good at picking up on the sort of stuff mentioned in this thread.

Iloveeverycat · 17/02/2025 21:12

IMBD is good it has a parents guide for violence, sex, swearing and scary scenes. If not sure I always check on there.

Saturday Night Fever hasn’t aged well either.

Well, it is an 18. And was rated X upon its release

@GingerLiberalFeminist OT but bloody hate home alone as a adult for all the plot holes that I now cannot unsee!

I hate it because of the level of rage I feel when Frank shouts at Kevin and then Kate’s absolutely shocking parenting of shoving him in the loft. I get so angry about it I can’t watch the rest of the film!
