To think Vinted is the new Wild West for buying and selling

New to Vinted.
Brought 2 items a scarf and a jumper.

The scarf arrived stiff as a board, didn't resemble the scarf in the photo and had lots of snagging.

The jumper, listed as being worn once, was covered in bobbles, very well used and I wouldn't have even donated to a charity shop.

Sold 3 items, first one buyer opened a case against me when not received the day after posting.

Second item, brand new with tags, buyer left a message to say not happy with sizing.

Third item, brand new with tags, buyer questioned if I had pets because they could see a hair on the jumper in the photo (it was a miniscule fleck which didn't resemble pet hair in any way shape or form).

Can't say my Vinted experience has been great so far, however, others seem to like it, I am hoping I have just got off to a bad start.

Check reviews before you buy. Make sure they have a selling history and are highly rated- lots of scammer and useless types.

DS sold some toys in there and then used the money to purchase a switch game. They left it til the last day to say 'soz can't find it'. Really upset him (he's 7!) as his money had been tied up for over a week and still no game 🙄

Sorry to hear this, very upsetting for a 7 year old, it isn't acceptable.

Another option is sites like Thrift Plus where they check the clothing. I find their descriptions are always accurate

Crunchymum · 15/02/2025 18:46

You can't open a case "the day after the item was posted". There are automatic time limits before you can do this.

Posted on Friday and messaged to say posted, case was opened on the Sunday, so it was one working day.

A buyer wouldn’t be able to open a case against you so soon after you’ve marked an item as posted.

Yorkshiredolls · 15/02/2025 18:51

Just bad Luck I think, I’ve done 115 transactions now, buying and selling, and rarely had a problem.

phoenixrosehere · 15/02/2025 19:08

Been all right so far. Only issues I’ve had is on the shipping end which I cannot help with. I ship the items within 12 hours and once in awhile one will take over a week to get to a buyer.

I have had a couple of issues, and have now removed all of my items for sale from the site. I had got 50 plus 5 star reviews, and met some lovely people who sold me items.

Up until last week, I loved the site and had not had any major issues. I now realise that the site was good when I was selling my cheaper items, but I came under the radar of the scammers when I decided to sell a brand new (unused with tags) LK Bennett handbag and a Ralph Lauren shirt. Luckily, I removed my handbag from sale.

I was very nearly scammed, and after deliver the buyer raised a claim to say the the shirt was not in the package but some random items. Until I then sent them a video of me packing their order and delivering it to the InPost locker. They then changed their story to the package had not been delivered. InPost confirmed it had been delivered. Under Vinted's rules I should have been paid, but they cancelled the sale and refunded the buyer. Without even reading the email trail or speaking with me. They sent me an email advising that I contact the seller to arrange a payment offer or for the return of the shirt.

Long story short, I did get paid in the end as I tracked the buyers Linkedin profile and they would have received a notification that I had viewed it. They soon emailed me to say that they had in fact received the shirt and would let Vinted know.

I received my payment soon after.

If you sell non-expensive and non-designer items, as a seller you are likely to be okay. But, any branded semi-expensive items, then I would not recommend it.

Sorry to hear of your experience, very stressful and very unpleasant. Thank you for sharing, good advice which I have taken on board, thank you.

I have been OK so far with buying and selling, but it annoys me that a buyer can just not pick up their parcel and get a full refund, including postage! What a waste of time for the seller and the courier companies. Surely if you change your mind about something you should at least still have to pay for the postage.

DetectiveSleuth · 16/02/2025 10:03

I can see where you’re going with this as I’ve had a couple of bad experiences (as has DH) Fortunately, we’ve had more good than bad experiences but I know others have been less fortunate.

I tend to scour the reviews and only buy new with tags/nearly new items.

I ordered something a few weeks ago apparently it's "delayed" and I can report it on March 7th for a refund 🙃 so? About 7 weeks with my money and me with no item?

Drylogsonly · 16/02/2025 20:56

Half the time it’s kids too, so annoying as their comms are awful!

ARealitycheck · 16/02/2025 21:04

Sometimes I think some buyers are forgetting what and where they are buying. It is essentially an online car boot sale. Ebay became all but unusable for used items especially clothes due to unreasonable expectations and low prices. When the buyer is getting maybe a a couple of £'s after costs and postage, we should be realistic.

TheChosenTwo · 16/02/2025 21:09

I’ve only had one issue but I rarely
buy anything. Bought a dress a few weeks ago that had been out of stock on the shop
website, what arrived was a really
horrible coat which due to me being away with work and only having one day to return (and finding there were none of the delivery option near me) I will now be donating to bloody charity. More annoying than anything else.
Had raised the issue as soon as I opened it but was going away the next day and just didn’t have time to sort it out properly.

tedibear · 16/02/2025 21:23

I've had quite a few bad experiences of items listed as very gd then turning up stained etc. I actually often now look closely at the pics and sometimes if it only says good condition I'll ask if there are any marks or stains. If it's expensive I'll still ask even if it says very good. The amount of ppl that then say yes it's got a wee stain on the front etc but haven't noted it in the description is frankly shocking.

I also now check they realise they've sold something or plan to send it. I had a few examples of waiting until the 7days then I get a cancellation notice and have to wait even longer for a refund. That really annoys me!

I haven't sold anything I still only sell on eBay as I prefer that for selling. I find ppl want stuff for peanuts on vinted and I don't think u can stop ppl from making offers when u don't want to sell lower than the listed price.

BigButtons · 16/02/2025 21:29

When they state’ only worn once’ . I always ask worn once by YOU because it is second hand and th wore it once or worn once from new with you as the original buyer?

ChangingHistory · 16/02/2025 21:35

I mainly buy new with or without tags, I've had to raise several cases for stained or damaged items but Vinted accepted and refunded immediately.

I've done OK on 'very good' items but I only buy if they are very cheap and will donate if they miss the mark.

I've sold a few new with tags things without problems.

Vinted is far more on the sellers side than ebay. I think some people will make up issues if they don't like something or it doesn't fit so don't enter into a conversation until after they raise an issue with photos.

I love Vinted, for clothes I probably love 3 out of 4 items and have saved a fortune.

pinkstripeycat · 16/02/2025 21:37

I stopped selling on Vinted when I tried to sell some beautiful shoes. I’d worn them once for a couple of hours whilst sitting in the car and at a restaurant table.

The buyer sawed the heels off and returned them to me saying I sent them to her like that. You could see all the saw marks. They were really well made and great quality shoes and you could see she’d had to work hard to destroy them. She claimed the heels (not the sole, the whole heel) magically fell off when she got them out the box. Vinted said they 100% agreed with me but they had a process to follow and so she didn’t have to pay for them.

It’s been a year and I’m still salty about it. It’s the fact that they were beautiful shoes and she made it so no one could wear them. I’d rather have given them away than have to throw them away.

ChristmasLightsLover · 16/02/2025 21:37

I agree. Bought a dress and it arrived this week. The dress is faded and worn, and the tie of the dress is damaged.

The seller suggested I must have cut it when opening it! I shared the photos of how I had opened it by hand. They gave me £3 back on a £25 dress. They have great reviews and I felt awkward to give a 3 star out of 5 but didn't think it fair to suggest I had damaged it when I hadn't.

Reading these posts I don't know if they're a bit of a scammer. Or if they are genuine and think that I am!

CactusForever · 16/02/2025 21:45

Out of the last two orders I’ve made the seller has subsequently cancelled the sale after over a week of waiting! So annoying since then I need to find another seller, wait for postage again… And there’s no way to leave bad feedback about the seller.

MimiGC · 16/02/2025 21:49

I've bought loads of stuff and never had any problems. Never sold anything.

Quercus30 · 16/02/2025 21:49

My favourite is when someone is selling something as "new with tags, never worn," alongside a photo of them wearing it in a bar. Or the other classic. " Very good. Wool. Says size 10 but fits more like a 6" because they have shrunk it. The first time I bought something, it was a size 6 but the seller had failed to mention it was a US size 6 so massive on me. I gave them 4 stars. I got an awful review off them for not giving them 5. Alot of stuff is very overpriced.
