AIBU to not understand why anyone would go on a motorcycle trip to Iran? Advice is not to go there at all but I can understand that someone desperate to see family would take a risk.

Weren't they traveling around questioning people etc? I thought that was part of their project. Maybe I'm completely wrong.

No you are correct. They accused Nazanin of doing the same and she was only visiting her parents and so these two left themselves wide open for it. And as I said before I hope they are not hurt or tortured but that's as far as I go.

RetroTotty · 18/02/2025 12:28

A judiciary spokesperson said that the couple, both aged 52, had "enter Iran under the guise of tourists" and "gathered information in multiple provinces of the country".

From the BBC news website.

I have not been so you obviously know ore than me but I would have thought young Iranian women wearing headscarves that barely cover the crown of their head.

A western woman doing the same I imagine is another matter and will attract attention.

My scarf never covered all of my hair, and as I'm not generally a scarf wearer, I wasn't good at it and a lot of the time it was slipping and similar to the way the fashion conscious girls were theirs. But I had no trouble or disapproval at all. One day it slipped off completely and a passer by just gently tapped my elbow and pointed.

But as I said, the rule has probably been tightened recently.

Penguinmouse · 18/02/2025 12:40

Imagine being so stupid. Foreign Office advice is incredibly clear on this.

I know many people who have travelled / travel to Iran and love it (it’s not as depicted by Western media).

I would not go right this instant with the current hostilities in the region but it is definitely on my bucket list

I know Iranians who won't go there

Plenty of people go there. It's a beautiful place to go to.
The politics and religion might persuade me not to go though.

Well this is true. They entered as tourists and then interviewed people for her research project. They gathered information to share at a seminar with others.

They are intelligent middle aged people who acted in a foolish and stupid way. They ignored advice from the foreign office and friends and family not to travel there and admit that online. They knew best (obviously incorrect).

Of course there are lovely people in Iran, as there are in Russia, North Korea and Gaza but would you go there on jollies and interview people. The government aren't nice, that's what is relevant here. Thinking skills might have made them realise that.

They remind me of what some refer to as 'useful idiots' on the marches for Gaza, the ones that shout 'intifada revolution ' sing along to 'from the river to the sea' or chant encouraging the Houthis to hold back the boats. Similar dippy mindset. All logic flies out the window and unable to use realism and fact. Most fail to understand that Hamas and other terrorists like the Houthis and ISIS etc love these types, even if they might throw them off a building or behead them.

I don't want them to be harmed. Maybe the Iranian authorities will realise they are a bit delusional and release them quickly and send them on.their happy clappy way. Hopefully, no prisoners will need to be released to get these arrogant foolish people back. I feel for their poor families whom they ignored.

Well I suppose technically that's true. They had tourist visas but she was collecting information for a project she was presenting in Australia. Presumably if you enter a country to carry out research, particularly a country like Iran, you need a specific visa for that.

They were naive and foolish and possibly a little arrogant but I would not wish the situation they now find themselves in on anyone.

Iranians, especially those with duel nationality, are particular targets for arrest. Far more so than foreign nationals.

TemporaryPosition · 18/02/2025 13:16

Why take such an avoidable risk

Are you actually saying people that March in the support of the people of Gaza are “useful idiots” and of a dippy mindset?

EsmaCannonball · 18/02/2025 13:45

Visas, guides and following the rules are a side issue here. The point is, if it wants to, the Iranian regime will imprison British citizens and then find a reason for it.

dottydodah · 18/02/2025 14:00

I think they have been unwise .Surely though they dont deserve this barrage of"well they are idiots .I have no sympathy" comments ? They misjudged the political climate thats all.Hopefully they will be released at some point, and it may deter others who are thinking of something similar.

Porcuporpoise · 18/02/2025 14:11

Travelling against foreign office advice is doing slightly more than "misjudging the political climate" @dottydodah There's unwise and then there's willful ignorance.

Misjudged?! You'd have thought NZR's 5 years incarceration would have been enough to put most remotely intelligent people completely and utterly off a trip to Iran....

Exactly. Dual nationality Iranians have been at the highest risk for some time.

As much as we and Iran know that the espionage charges are bollocks.

What they've accused them of - they almost did exactly that. Except we know they were tourists but she was on a research grant collecting material for her conference in Australia.

They literally gave Oran the arrest warrant by what they've posted on SM 🤦‍♀️

maggiecate · 18/02/2025 14:31

The Iranian people are famously hospitable - it’s a cultural thing, they take pride in welcoming travellers. The BBCs John Simpson has written about it, and there’s lots of others who’ve visited there no problem. However there’s a long history of mistrust of Britain that predates the current regime due to our his of intervention in the area. Travelling there on a British passport would definitely get you side-eyed in certain quarters even when relations are good. They basically think that Britain is behind any setbacks that befall them so if you have an alternative passport to travel on you should.

They didn't "misjudge the political climate"

They went against FCO advice not to travel due to the political climate.

That's like going to the Carribean in hurricane season and being surprised you get stranded due to a hurricane.

butterfly0404 · 18/02/2025 14:41

No sympathy from me, the advice not to travel was pretty clear and substantial. Arrogant fuckwits.

fashionqueen0123 · 18/02/2025 14:49

So now we wait and see what they want in return. It took a very long time for Nazanins bribe money to become clear. I think it was months or more. At first it was all this spying rubbish. Maybe they don't even know yet what they'll ask for.

Misjudged!

Perhaps they should’ve been deterred from the previous people this happened too? No, they ignored that, the FCO recommendation and family and friends, because they’re pig headed idiots!

ThePoshUns · 18/02/2025 14:57

I don't wish them any harm but still maintain that I have no sympathy for them at all. They were advised not to go, this is all on them.
