How much are you spending on your energy bills every month?

I am with octopus and just checked my exact energy usage each month. I have used £54 worth of electricity and £111 worth of gas in January. So, the total is £165. Several years ago, we were paying around £95. We are family of 2 adults and 2 very young DC.
We have a 4 bed house built in 1975, it's detached with two living rooms, kitchen and 2 toilets. We have smart thermostats on most radiators which we use to control and set temperature for each room and we are conscious to reduce temperature at night. But, still it feels like a huge bill.
How much are you paying and AIBU to think it's a big amount for the energy we use?

£81 for a three bed terrace house. We have solar panels that help (not so much in winter!). I pay the same through the year so build up a credit for the winter months when I’m using more.

IceIceBabyBump · 15/02/2025 09:01

Recently switched tarrfis so now paying £120 per month for gas and electricity combined.

Three bedroomed Victorian terrace, no cavity insulation, insulated roof.

Two adults, no children, elderly dog (we mainly heat the house for the dog).

DeepFatFried · 15/02/2025 09:02

Tbh that sounds like a lot of energy for the money! Still very expensive I know.

I have a tiny 3 bed terrace and am frugal with heat. Don’t usually have it on during the day , never go over 18’, no small children or sports fanatics in the house so not washing every day, never use tumble dryer. I have double glazing throughout.

My winter bills this year are about £170 pcm (I PAYG, exact cost pcm, Smart meter)

EDF. Robbing bastards!

Jmaho · 15/02/2025 09:03

Also Octopus. We have the tariff where its cheap overnight as has an electric car
It has just gone up to £289pm
2 adults 4 children 4 bed detached house built 25 years ago
Both wfh pretty much full time

ValentineValentineV · 15/02/2025 09:03

£200 for a 12 year old four bedroom house (heating on for 17 hours a day) and charging an electric car.

ThisNeverEndingShitShow · 15/02/2025 09:07

Also with Octopus. 3 bed detached. 2 adults.
£75.18 electricity £153.20 gas. Heating on no more than 4 hours per day, I’m out 12 hours 3 x per week, thermostat set to 15 degrees heating is off overnight.
I have no idea why it’s so high.

Loveduppenguin · 15/02/2025 09:13

No gas but my electricity is 120 per month. Oil fired central heating which works out at 70 a month.
my house is a 3 bed bungalow with not great windows to be honest. I imagine if they were replaced it would retain heat better.

GretchenWienersHair · 15/02/2025 09:14

I was paying £200 but now it’s gone down to £170. 3 bedroom maisonette (I do use the tumble dryer a fair bit though.)

FTMAug22 · 15/02/2025 09:14

We are with EDF on one of their Ensure trackers, so tracks the price cap but £50 discount on standing charges. Currently paying £130 per month for a 4 bed semi, 2 adults and 1 toddler. House is pretty much constantly heated to 18 degrees as we’ve got a two year old.

Portakalkedi · 15/02/2025 09:15

£125 a month, modern 3 bed bungalow with heatpump and UFH, no solar. Moved here last year and were afraid the cost would be much higher, but have been pleasantly surprised. 2 adults WFH, and the heating is on all the time as it's supposed to be with a heat pump, but each room has a thermostat with 7 time periods so adjusted that way. It cost much more to heat our previous Victorian stone-built cottage, with gas. I guess it's the modern insulation that makes such a difference.

Chaiii · 15/02/2025 09:15

We're paying £148 a month combined.

3 bed, very well (too well) insulated detached bungalow, 2 adults and 2 young children plus EC car charger.

Bubblegumtatoos · 15/02/2025 09:16

£370.00 in January. 4 bed 4 bathroom detached.

We pay £250 a month DD.

DC are at Uni most of the year and we live abroad 3 months of the year.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 15/02/2025 09:16

Energy prices have gone up hugely in the last few years so no point comparing to two or even four years ago.

Electricity only here, last bill was £130ish for the month but it's been cold.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 15/02/2025 09:17

For a 4 bed with two living rooms I think that's reasonable tbh. We pay £120 for a 3 bed terrace.

LadyPenelope68 · 15/02/2025 09:19

£280 a month, combined gas/electric, me, DH, DS22 and DS24. Heating on regularly as I have a condition that makes me susceptible to the cold, sons have long showers and I do at least 2 loads of washing a day. Majority of the bill is definitely gas. Three bedroom house, built in 60’s, so not the best insulated although massively improved by us.

MikeRafone · 15/02/2025 09:19

With octopus and basically the same as you last month.

i have to do a reading once a month as i pay the entire bill each month, i keep the money for the utilities in an account paying interest- so i earn money on it not the utilities company.

obviously the winter is more expensive that the summer

in in 3 bed detached built 1966 and its well insulated with cavity wall and lift etc

DanglingMod · 15/02/2025 09:20

Very similar age and size of property ro yours but on one floor so less efficient to heat. Pay £248 a month, so use about £500 a month in the winter and significantly less in the summer. Yours sounds very cheap for a detached, larger house.

cardibach · 15/02/2025 09:21

Some of these bills sound crazy. I live in a 2 bed terrace (3rd bed in the attic but it's very much a spare and isn't heated) built in the mid 19th century. No cavity walls. I never let the temp go below 16 and it's 18 for a few hours every morning and all evening. I don't have a tumble dryer but I run a dishwasher every day and a washing machine whenever I need (much less than the MN average though). Cooking is electric.
My bills with OVO are £85 a
Month - I pay all year to build up a cushion in the summer.

Nothanksiwillwalk · 15/02/2025 09:22

I pay £230 per month. Our house is big though (6bedrooms/5 bathrooms/2 kitchens) with 4 adults and 2 teenagers . Everyone showers every other day and the washing machine/tumble dryer is on all the time 🙄

We generally use the heating in the evening only or sometimes not at all if we are out. We use the airfryer or hob mostly for meals. I saw a decrease in usage when we stopped using the oven every evening

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 15/02/2025 09:25

3 bed house, 2 adults 2 children, £188 a month on gas and electric. We do use the tumble dryer and dishwasher often.

Hungrychocolate · 15/02/2025 09:26

@jmmy house sounds big from spec but floor area is anywhere around 1400 sqft. We also have electric car which we charge overnight and both WFH most days.

Dishwasher is used every night and washing machine and tumble dryer twice a week.

3 bed detached, ten years old. 2 adults 2 primary age children. £120 pm for both gas and electric combined with Octopus. Our thermostat never drops below 17.5 overnight and I have it set to 20 for waking hours. Reading this thread I feel we have a very good deal and we are fortunate to live in such a warm home for the price we are paying. I also have the hot water on permanently so we never run out I’ll never forget chatting to friends a couple of years ago, saying they’d moved into a big old drafty house, and were schooled to be paying £800 per month and still absolutely freezing shivering on the sofa under blankets to keep warm. It entirely put me off of upsizing!

brawhen · 15/02/2025 09:31

£200 year-round DD for electric - includes car charging 50 miles/day

Budgeting £350/month for LPG but I think we will come in under that this year.

7 bed 3 reception Victorian detached villa north-ish Scotland

Your bill sounds quite low for your usage.
